By Ava M. Stinnett
When a loved one starts to exhibit signs of cognitive decline, it can be difficult to know what to do
first. Are the signs typical of the normal aging process? Are they due to a medical issue that mimics
dementia but is treatable and, perhaps, reversible? Or, are they in the early stages of Alzheimer’s
disease?
You’re probably familiar with some common symptoms that may point to the early stages of Alzheim-
er’s disease and other forms of dementia. For example, memory loss might affect job skills or the abil-
ity to perform familiar tasks. You may notice the person having problems with language, such as
finding the right words for familiar objects. They may get disoriented or show poor or decreased judg-
ment. Perhaps they misplace familiar objects frequently or begin to have noticeable changes in
mood, behavior, or personality.
What you may not know is that researchers have found a number of other symptoms that may indi-
cate a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Many of these lesser-known symp-
toms happen very early in the disease process.
A small study•by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital uncovered an association between
a declining ability to recognize, remember, and distinguish between smells and an increased risk of
developing Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers found that this neurodegenerative symptom was
present 10 years before memory-related symptoms developed.
In another small study, more than 80 percent•of older men with a sleep disorder known as•rapid eye
movement sleep behavior disorder•(RBD) went on to develop a neurodegenerative condition, includ-
ing Alzheimer’s disease. Previously, it was believed that sleep problems in people diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s were caused by the disease, but new research suggests that some sleep disorders may
contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
One year-long study found that elderly participants who fell more frequently and at a younger age had
higher levels of biomarkers that indicate an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s.
People in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease may react catastrophically to minor problems,
shouting, crying inconsolably, pacing in an agitated way, or even striking out physically.
If you recognize these signs in yourself or a loved one, it would be wise to see a physician. Your fami-
ly doctor may do part of an evaluation and then recommend a doctor who is experienced in Alzheim-
er’s diagnosis such as a neurologist, geriatrician, or other specialist to complete testing. The earlier
the diagnosis, the better chance for treatments to slow the progression of the disease.

Safely-You is so proud to be mentioned in the Senate's Special
Committee on Aging's newly released publication on Fall Pre-
vention; a comprehensive report that provides evidence-based
recommendations on ways to reduce the risk of falling.
“Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for old-
er Americans, often leading to a downward spiral with serious
consequences. In addition to the physical and emotional trauma
of falls, the financial toll is staggering,” said Senator Collins.
“Now is the time, and now is our opportunity, to take action to
prevent falls. Our bipartisan report includes key recommenda-
tions to take steps to reduce the risk of falls.”
We are extremely grateful for Carlton Senior Living’s on-going
commitment and partnership in our shared goal of supporting
safe and supportive care for people living with dementia.
www.safely-you.com 450 Townsend Street San Francisco Ca 94107 415.579.3630Preventative Exercise vs. Restorative Exercise
By age 65, people who haven’t engaged in regular exercise may incur a decrease
in their physical muscular strength level by as much as 80%. Muscle strengthening
and balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls up to 45%. Live 2 B Healthy’s
preventative exercise programs focus on improving strength, balance, and mobility.
Remaining physically active in exercise before an injury or illness occurs, greatly
reduces the chance of needing physical therapy or restorative exercise programs
later to recover from an injury or fall. Functional decline in seniors is often the result
of a sedentary lifestyle, rather than the effects of the normal aging process.
According to the U.S. Department of Aging, fitness programs can be
effectively used to achieve the following goals for seniors:
● Lessen the degree of disability for
seniors as they age
● Increase muscular strength and
endurance which deteriorates
through inactivity
● Improve joint flexibility and range
of motion by keeping them loose
and flexible
● Strengthen bone mass which is
weakened in later stage by osteo-
porosis
There is always one consistent finding in health research: Exercise helps you live
longer and better. Live 2 B Healthy is dedicated to helping seniors remain strong
and healthy to keep them mobile and active throughout their aging years. Keeping
seniors actively involved in preventative exercise programs will reduce their risks
of becoming ill, or experiencing a fall or injury. Regular exercise also aids in slowing
down the aging process, and reducing the need of medical interventions.
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start
today and make a new ending.” ~Maria R., Live 2 B Healthy Participant
