year, many victim-survivors of sexual abuse may have been
triggered by the revelations in the report and the repeated mention of it in the
news and on social media. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Office of
Victims Assistance Ministry was created to provide a safe and compassionate
environment for victim-survivors who need to report abuse to be able to do

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find
the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh.
In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY – Today we celebrate this beautiful feast of the “Three Kings” in which Our Lord is manifested as the Savior of all mankind. All nations are called to adore the Lord. This feast reminds us of the universality of God’s love for all of us. SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR INDOOR WORSHIP – Now that the County of Los Angeles has lifted it's unconstitutional ban on indoor worship, we must be diligent in following the safety protocols which are necessary to ensure the health of our parishioners. These are clearly posted on our website (www.standrewpasadena.org) as well as on the front doors of the church. I want to highlight the most important: - please maintain a distance of 6 feet between households - please wear a face covering at all times - please sanitize your hands. Sanitizing stations are located at the front door gates of the church as well as the side vestibules SCHOOL REOPENS – Last month our Parish School received the required waiver from the City of Pasadena Health Department to enable us to reopen for in person instruction for grades up to the 4th grade this week. There are a variety of safety protocols in place which must be followed and our school staff has diligently been preparing for the return of our children. God willing, soon the remainder of our classes will be allowed to return as well. Please familiarize yourself with our wonderful Catholic educational program at www.saspasadena.com THANK YOU MSGR. HERRERA – A special word of gratitude goes out to Monsignor Emigdio Herrera who has been helping us out this week while Fr. Martin Rodriguez took his Christmas vacation. Monsignor was an Associate Pastor here years ago so he is familiar with our parish and many of our long time parishioners remember him fondly. Thank you, Monsignor! HVAC REPLACEMENT – If you've been reading my weekly column since I arrived in July 2019, you know that the heating and AC system have been frequently mentioned. Our church heater dates from 1927 when the church was built. The air conditioners date from the 1970's. We have been wanting to replace the entire system for quite some time. It has finally come to pass! We received the necessary funding to replace the outdated and inefficient old system with a brand new system which includes heat, air conditioning and ventilation. It also includes new electronic thermostats (the old system was just "on or off ") which can be programmed to turn on as needed and keep the temperature inside the church stable. LIGHTS ABOVE THE SANCTUARY – I am also pleased to tell you that we are now also actively working on the final lighting project of the church: the illumination of the beautiful mural of the life of St. Andrew which is above the main altar. God willing, this should also be done in the near future. The electrical panel for the church also needs replacement as it dates from the 1950's. Bit by bit, it's getting done! PLAN FOR THE FUTURE! – One of the chief sources of funding for major projects in most parishes comes from bequests which are left to it by faithful parishioners. In every parish I’ve been assigned, almost annually a large financial contribution is received from someone who has remembered the parish in their Last Will and Testament. It is usually not the full amount of the estate (although at times it is) but it is at least a portion. It is also common to name a parish as the beneficiary in a life insurance policy. These types of bequests are vital to the long term running of the parish as they are the means by which large construction and maintenance projects are funded. I encourage you to prayerfully consider the possibility of remembering the parish in your Will and/or naming it as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. This is a great way of ensuring that your legacy continues long into the future as the parish serves the many other generations. May God reward you for your generosity. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2021 Ecce advenit dominator Dominus: et regnum in manu eius, et potestas, et imperium. Deus, judicium tuum regida: et justitiam tuam filio regis. Behold, the Sovereign Lord is coming: and in his hands are kingship, and governance, and power. O God, endow with judgment your King, and the King’s son with your righteousness. The introit for today, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, speaks of the coming of God (the word “epiphany,” from the Greek ἐπιφάνεια (epipháneia) means “manifestation”). Not just the coming (the Advent) but the coming in presence with dominion over all the world. The shepherds who first greeted the infant King (about whom we read in the reading from Christmas Mass in the Night) were Jewish, and their coming to the stable in Bethlehem constituted the Manifestation of the Lord to the Jewish people. The feast of the Epiphany, or Manifestation, of Jesus to the world is seen in the appearance of the decidedly non-Jewish Magi— foreigners—astrologers, no less!—who read the sign in the heavens of the coming of a newborn king: and they came and adored. Their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh presaged the life of Jesus: gold, a gift for royalty; frankincense, signifying Jesus’ divinity; and myrrh, presaging Jesus’ Passion and death on the Cross. The presence of the magi marked the Manifestation of the Lord to the Gentiles—a term meaning “the nations”— those who were not Jewish; that is, the Epiphany of the Lord to the whole world, signaling that his coming was for all people. The hymn What Child Is This? is nowadays often printed as a verse-and-refrain hymn, but it was not originally so. The “refrain” This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing; haste, haste to bring him laud: the babe, the son of Mary is really only one of three texts for that part of the music. In reality, verse two does not have a refrain, but rather continues Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the cross be borne for me, for you; hail! hail! the Word Made Flesh, the babe, the son of Mary. The unfortunate omission of this portion of texts disconnects the narrative of the Nativity and the Epiphany from the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord; and yet, we see that they are all intimately conneted: even the Magi’s gifts told of this unity. What is this kingship, governance, and power of which the introit for today’s Mass speaks? It is nothing less than the sovereign Dominion of the Lord over the world, his kingdom made present in his Church. Like the Magi, we too recognize the Lord, and have come to adore: and yet more gracious is God’s gift to us, for he gives us his very Flesh to eat and gives us his very Blood to drink. The prayer after Communion brings this sense of this celebration to its true focus: “go before us with heavenly light, O Lord, always and everywhere, that we may perceive with clear sight and revere with true affection the mystery in which you have willed us to participate.” Let us pray that God grant us always the desire to seek him out and follow his will for us. DEL DIRECTOR DE MUSICA: La Epifanía del Señor 3 de enero de 2021 Ecce advenit dominator Dominus: et regnum in manu eius, et potestas, et imperium. Deus, judicium tuum regida: et justitiam tuam filio regis. He aquí que viene el Señor Soberano: y en sus manos la realeza, y gobernanza y poder. Oh Dios, dota de juicio a tu Rey, y el hijo del Rey con tu justicia. El introito de hoy, la Solemnidad de la Epifanía del Señor, habla de la venida de Dios (la palabra "epifanía", del griego ἐπιφάνεια (epipháneia) significa "manifestación"). No solo la venida (el advenimiento) sino la venida en presencia con dominio sobre todo el mundo. Los pastores que saludaron por primera vez al infante Rey (sobre quien leemos en la lectura de la Misa de Navidad en la Noche) eran judíos, y su llegada al establo en Belén constituyó la Manifestación del Señor al pueblo judío. La fiesta de la Epifanía, o Manifestación, de Jesús al mundo se ve en la aparición de los magos decididamente no judíos —¡extranjeros — ¡ni menos astrólogos! - que leyeron la señal en los cielos de la venida de un rey recién nacido: y vinieron y adoraron. Sus regalos de oro, incienso y mirra presagiaban la vida de Jesús: oro, un regalo para la realeza; incienso, que significa la divinidad de Jesús; y mirra, presagio de la Pasión y muerte de Jesús en la Cruz. La presencia de los magos marcó la Manifestación del Señor a los gentiles, un término que significa "las naciones", aquellos que no eran judíos; es decir, la Epifanía del Señor a todo el mundo, señalando que su venida era para todos. ¿Qué es este reinado, gobierno y poder del que habla el introito de la Misa de hoy? Es nada menos que el dominio soberano del Señor sobre el mundo, su reino hecho presente en su Iglesia. Como los Magos, también nosotros reconocemos al Señor y hemos llegado a adorar: y aún más misericordioso es el regalo de Dios para nosotros, porque Él nos da su misma Carne para comer y su misma Sangre para beber. La oración después de la Comunión trae este sentido de esta celebración a su verdadero enfoque: “Ve delante de nosotros con luz celestial, oh Señor, siempre y en todas partes, para que podamos percibir con claridad y reverenciar con verdadero afecto el misterio en el que has querido que participemos ”. Oremos para que Dios nos conceda siempre el deseo de buscarlo y seguir su voluntad para con nosotros. Amén. Maran atha! ¡El Señor ha venido!
