Greenie Update:

It was with sadness that we learned our ‘Greenie’ editor Megan was moving out of the district. As
the communication medium for the Waiau Pa Clarks Beach Business Association, the Greenie is
such an integral part of the Clark’s Beach/Waiau Pa area that a group of us felt we simply had
to keep it alive. It may come as a surprise for readers of the magazine to know that it will take
8 of us to maintain what Megan did. We would also like to acknowledge Felicity Reber who works
steadfastly looking after all things accounting on behalf of the Business Association. Fortunately
Felicity is NOT moving and will keep the rest of us on track.
Your new team is:
Acting Editor Annette Lusk ann@sustainable-edge.co.nz
Accounts Felicity Reber accounts@thegreenie.co.nz

Megan will still be helping us in the background until we are able to find a new editor. For more
information on applying for that role please contact Annette Lusk.
We want to wish Megan all the very best for the future.

The Long White Ride
By Toni Dolan
(story and photos adapted from Stuff)

Our very own Joanna Sharpe has just
completed a cycle challenge from Cape
Reinga to Bluff, to raise awareness of
bowel cancer. She completed the more
than 2,000km ride in under a week.
Joanna is expected to have set a Guin-
ness World record after becoming the first
woman to complete the “Long White Ride”
in which participants cycle the length of
New Zealand almost non-stop.
The reason for doing this was to raise
awareness of bowel cancer and encourage
people to get checked. Joanna had a bowel
cancer scare herself, but caught it early,
but her good cycling friend, Britt Mill, sad-
ly passed away last year. The two cyclists
formed a special bond and Britt had hoped
to join Joanna on this ride.
Joanna says she spent a lot of
time on the ride thinking of Britt
and believed she was with her in
spirit throughout the journey.
   Joanna started pedaling from
Cape Reinga at 6.30am on Monday
1 February and made it to Bluff at
4.19pm on the following Sunday.
She squeezed in a 45 to 60 minute
sleep each day and spent up to 20
hours in the saddle at a time.
   Only 4 cyclists have completed
this ride and now we can add our
very own Joanna from Clarks
Beach to the mix and, as previ-
ously said, the only female to ever
do this.

Congratulations Joanna.

to treat injuries.
Home Fires
Did you know a house fire can kill you in less than three minutes?
In a fire, you’ll probably be scared and disorientated. Toxic smoke might make it hard to breathe
and see clearly. You will only have 1 or 2 minutes from the sounding of the smoke alarm to when
your life is seriously threatened by fire or smoke. Build your escape plan
https://www.escapemyhouse.co.nz/.
Medical Response
St John has an agreement with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. This means fire stations person-
nel may arrive prior to ambulance personnel. Instances such as heart attacks are life threat-
ening and the earlier the intervention the better. Earlier intervention aids the recovery process
considerably.
All fire fighters have basic first aid certificates that are renewed at a course every two years.

Auckland Council are consulting on our 10-year Budget (the Long-term Plan)
The 10-year Budget looks at our priorities for the next 10 years and how we might
pay for them. We are proposing an average rate increase of 5% for the first year
and 3.5% for years three to ten. The UAGC is proposed to increase at the same
rate as the general rates increases that are proposed.

Other key topics we are asking about are:
Extending the Targeted Rates by three years for Water Quality and Natural Environment and that
they go up at the rate proposed for the general rates over the next 10years. Both are proposed to be
charged on the CV value of the property.
Waste Targeted Rate going up by .9%. A new fee of $70 for animal control management officers to
attend livestock nuisance complaints with additional fees of $120 for subsequent callouts and $75 for
after hours.
Rural properties inside the Rural Urban Boundary, it is proposed that there differential of 0.8 rural
change to 1 residential, as these properties are now zoned residential.

Covid 19 is predicted to have an ongoing impact for the next three years, with an estimated shortfall
in revenue of $540 million between now and 2024 – bringing the cumulative total to around $1 billion
since the start of the pandemic.

The Franklin Local Board as part of the LTP, have a list of priorities for the first three years of the LTP,
more information on these, the LTP and how to give feedback is at
www.akhaveyoursay.nz/recoverybudget. Submissions close on 22th March 21. The Regional Land
Transport Plan will be consulted on from the 23rd March to the 26th April.

Happy to take your feedback on these or any other things, that are on your mind, on the above
contacts
