PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY: DANIELLE STANLEY In this Issue:
It is said that “April Showers Bring May Flowers” ...but 01. President’s
where did that crazy round of snow fit in? Spring is
certainly here though, as is evident through our longer Message
days of sunshine, trees in full blooms, and even some new
wildlife in your backyard. 03. Financial

Speaking of spring, we just hosted our Annual Spring Management
Professional Development Training (PDT) with the
Greater Columbus AGA on April 22 and 23, 2021, and it 04. Running the
                        was a huge success!

We had a wide variety of speakers that engaged us in data analytics, leadership, Chapter
ethics, and other financial management topics. We were also very fortunate to have
Mr. Wesley Miller, SES and Mr. Thomas Murphy, SES, take time out of their busy 05. Chapter News
schedules to share their thoughts with us. If you did not have a chance to join us
this time around, keep your eyes and ears open for future events! Speaking of our 06. Honor A
PDT, the ASMC National PDI is right around the corner. Although there will be no
travel involved this year, the virtual environment will still provide engaging and Veteran
enlightening speakers, workshops, and mini-courses.
                                                                                     11. Calendars
With all the things that come with spring, the Chapter will also have our annual
officer election. We will be asking for nominations for our Executive Board
                                                                                     12. Executive

                 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY: DANIELLE STANLEY

If you have ever thought about holding an officer position or becoming more involved in
Chapter events, now is the time to reach out and ask questions. If the Executive Board is not
your thing, we have numerous committees with vacancies for both Chair and Co-Chair
positions, as well as volunteers for community service events. This brings me back to our
theme for the year from Mother Teresa: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a
stone across the waters to create many ripples.” So take a moment to think how you can help
create those ripples to impact our Chapter and community.

I’m looking forward to these “May flowers” and also seeing some new individuals with fresh
ideas to help get involved with our Buckeye Chapter! See you all soon!

Whether you want to learn how to invest, how to balance
your budget, how to perform better at work or how to build
wealth, there’s an audiobook for that. Many popular personal
finance books are now available to buy or borrow in audio

finance books to find 10 audiobooks you should listen to

• Rich Dad Poor Dad – This book was released nearly 25 years ago, but it remains an extremely
popular personal finance book. Now available as an audiobook, Kiyosaki makes the argument
that you don’t need to earn a high income to be rich, and teaches parents how to talk to their kids
to set them up for financial success.

• Indistractable – If you struggle with productivity, this book is for you. Former Stanford lecturer
and behavioral design expert, Nir Eyal, shares his four-step model to overcome distractions that

                                                                                                          U PDAT E
could be holding you back in your career and personal life.

• Get Good With Money – Tiffany “The Budget-nista” Aliche’s book outlines her 10-step
formula for achieving financial security and peace of mind. Aliche shares how to create a budget
and how to be prepared for both your long- and short-term financial goals, including raising
your credit score and protecting your beneficiaries’ future.

• The 10X Rule – “The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure,” lays out a
path to “extreme success.” “Massive thoughts must be followed by massive actions,” Cardone
explains. “There’s nothing ordinary about The 10X Rule. It is simply what it says: 10 times the
thoughts and 10 times the actions of other people... You never do what others do.”

• The 5AM Club – What do Apple CEO Tim Cook, Oprah Winfrey, and Michelle Obama have in
common? They all start their days at the crack of dawn (or earlier). Leadership and elite
performance expert Robin Sharma shares the morning routine that has helped his clients
maximize their productivity and improve their mental and physical health. And don’t worry if
you’re not a morning person – Sharma also gives tips for how to become one.

6 HONOR A VETERAN
           MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT
BY: THE NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM
The National Veterans Memorial and Museum posted a story
about a Medal of Honor Recipient with the hashtag
#MedalofHonorMonday. This story is from Monday, April 26.

On March 4, 2002, Master Sergeant John Chapman, US Air
Force, distinguished extraordinary heroism as an Air Force
Special Tactics Combat Controller, attached to the Navy SEAL
Team conducting reconnaissance operations in Takur Ghar,
Afghanistan. During insertion, the team’s helicopter was
U PDAT E

ambushed, causing a teammate to fall into an entrenched group
of enemy combatants below. Chapman and the team
voluntarily reinserted into the snow-capped mountain, into the
heart of a known enemy stronghold to secure one of their own.

Without regard for his own safety, he immediately engaged, moving in the direction of the
closest enemy position despite coming under heavy fire from multiple directions. Chapman
fearlessly charged an enemy bunker, up a steep include in thigh-deep snow and into hostile
fire, directly engaging the enemy. Upon reaching the bunker, he cleared the position, killing
all enemy occupants. He moved from cover only 12 meters from the enemy, and exposed
himself once again to attack a second bunker, from which an emplaced machine gun was
firing on his team. During this assault from an exposed position, Chapman was injured by
enemy fire. Despite severe, mortal wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a
violent engagement with multiple enemy personnel before making the ultimate sacrifice.
THE

Chapman was the first Air Force Combat Controller to be
subsequently upgraded to the Medal of Honor since the
Vietnam War. This story is being shared as a reminder that
May is arriving, and this is when we honor our fallen
heroes. Memorial Day is the time for honoring and
mourning the military personnel who have died in the
performance of military duties. They serve in the US
Armed Forces selflessly and dedicate their lives to the
                                             American people.

Memorial Day was declared a Federal Holiday by an act
of Congress in 1971. It is also known as Decoration Day.
Memorial Day 2021 is on Monday, May 31.

• The Psychology of Money – Author Morgan Housel notes that most personal finance decisions
are made based on your views about money rather than actually sitting down to crunch the

stories about how people think about money and how to make better sense of it for yourself.

Malcom Gladwell attempts to answer. If you want to become a high achiever – or find out why
you aren’t one – this is an entertaining and informative listen.

type snacks, muffins, and danishes.

Terri can assist with completing the information to come onto the installation for those who are
currently DFAS employees. Non-DFAS personnel are not required to complete the information to
come on the base. This is also a great opportunity for anyone who has a teenager looking for
community service credit towards graduation or National Honors Society. We can have 1-2 students at
this event, and ASMC Buckeye Chapter will provide a letter for the student.

position. Ask them how it has helped them grow professionally and about the relationships they have
made. Did you know there is also information on our chapter’s website under “Membership” that

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY – MID-OHIO FOODBANK
           BY: BUCKEYE CHAPTER EXECUTIVE BOARD
U PDAT E

The ASMC Buckeye Chapter has an opportunity to support the Mid-
Ohio Foodbank’s Kroger Food Pantry the week of May 24-27, 2021.
The foodbank is seeking volunteers to serve as Pantry Assistants
during the evening shifts from 5:00-8:30 PM. We’re targeting the night
of Monday, May 24, but we’d like to support the foodbank the other
nights if those dates better fit your schedule.

We will need at least five members to volunteer this week to get us to the 20 hours needed for this
event to count toward our community service goal. However, feel free to bring family members
that are also looking for volunteer hours and/or enjoy giving back to our Central Ohio community.

Note: Please sign up at your earliest convenience. These spots are filling up quickly, so let’s see if
we can get some spots lined up sooner rather than later. As these spots fill up quickly, please sign
up and you have the option of canceling your spot later on if you cannot attend.
THE

If you do not already have a volunteer account on the Mid-Ohio Volunteer Hub, please establish an
account on the Mid-Ohio Foodbank Volunteer Hub at https://mofb.volunteerhub.com/ and register
to volunteer as a Pantry Assistant for the night(s) that work best for you.

Once you sign up, please send me a note at magdanowski@deloitte.com to indicate that you will
be joining us. If you have any questions or need help, please let me know.

Note: Must be at least 13 years old to participate. If you have a student who needs credit for
volunteer hours, please provide the school name, student’s name, age, and let us know if the
student will be bringing a letter from their school to be signed.

The Mid-Ohio Foodbank is located at 3960 Brookham Drive, Grove City, Ohio 43213. Please sign
up online at the Mid-Ohio Volunteer Hub and RSVP at your earliest convenience to Mike
Agdanowski at magdanowski@deloitte.com. Thank you for volunteering!
