About the Y&H
Region
The WEA delivers adult education courses in communities
across the Yorkshire and Humber region. There are a wide
range of subjects and courses to choose from, you can
gain new skills, share existing skills and knowledge, gain
qualifications or enjoy learning something new.
This brochure gives a flavour of the courses running in the region for the
Autumn Term 2018 and into 2019.

We run courses throughout the year and you can search online to find out
what’s on offer near you wea.org.uk/yorkshumber

Our adult education staff are located in the heart of communities,
delivering our courses on your doorstep where most of our students travel
less than 3 miles to attend a class.

We work closely with partners to ensure people are fully supported to
take part in learning. You’ll find a warm welcome in all of our classes, with
experienced tutors and support staff. As well as being educational, our
courses help people to feel less lonely and isolated, and bring people of all
ages and backgrounds together. Find the course that’s right for you and
learn with us, the WEA way!

In addition to the courses listed in this brochure, we run courses and
activities with a range of community organisations, working closely with our
partners to deliver education with the purpose of reducing social exclusion
and bringing people together to improve health, wellbeing and to become
actively engaged in their community. These community courses support
a wide range of groups including adults with learning and/or physical
disabilities, adults living in areas of disadvantage and unemployment,
people with lived experience of mental health difficulties, vulnerable men
and women, and black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We welcome
the opportunity to connect with organisations to raise aspirations through
education.

Building confidence by
unearthing a hidden talent

Daisy is a single mum of two girls.
She was shy and nervous and
suffered from low self-esteem.

It was in her local community centre that
Daisy saw a poster advertising a sewing
group and she plucked up the courage to go
along.
At the start Daisy wasn’t confident enough to
do her work on her own; she received lots of
support on a one to one basis from her WEA
tutor and gained support from the group
demonstrations and student interactions.
Daisy soon learned new skills and her
confidence blossomed – making friends on
the course and discovering a hidden talent
that has empowered her to achieve more in
other aspects of her life.
Since attending the sewing course, Daisy
has not only achieved new skills and seen
an increase in her self-confidence she has
now continued her educational pathway
to gain greater qualifications including the
completion of the WEA’s ‘Volunteers Helping
in Schools’ course which revealed her desire
to work with children.
Daisy has now gained employment working
in a local primary school.
To be able to attend the sewing class
is so much more than attending any
class - it has given me the confidence
to learn new skills. I feel a sense of
achievement every time I finish a
garment…Best of all I am able to
share and pass on my skills to my
daughters who are also very proud of
                                                their mummy’s work”.

Art class helps AnIita
with her wellbeing

Anita finds her happy place at our Art for As I suffer from depression
                                                             and anxiety, I find this
Wellbeing class in Halifax. course very therapeutic.
When I am all alone in my
                                                             flat and become down,
Our Art for Wellbeing class ran by WEA Tutor Sarah, is I tend to make items
designed to give students an opportunity to explore a inspired by this course
variety of art and craft techniques through a series of which gives me a lot of
mini projects. Sarah ensures each of her sessions are pleasure. I have made a
flexible, giving students the opportunity to personalise wreath and garland out
their own learning journey towards the end of the of re-cycled fabrics and
course. knitted small robins too.

Student Anita had an on going battle with anxiety and Anita
depression making daily life a struggle. Sarah’s Art class
allows her to gain control of her emotions and feels that
being a part of the class makes her feel less isolated.
She now takes pride in showcasing her work to the rest
of the group, coming a long way from the start of the
course where she found it difficult to converse even in
the slightest.
Prior to the course, Anita felt quite isolated and
struggled to get out of bed on a morning due to her
anxiety. She was apprehensive on her first session
however, she feels that the course is “one of the best
things that’s happened” for her. Her fellow students
have become her friends and she has also joined the
Drawing Class as she loves what the sessions bring her.

Tutor Tales..
Energetic tutor Bridget welcomes me into her vibrant class room. It is
full of smiling faces, and Bridget is getting her Helping in Schools class
geared up for a game-based learning activity. The session has a lively
start! A ball game is used for learning names, and physical, mental &
emotional development are discussed. The ball game also highlights how
gross motor skills and communication skills can be developed by children
through active learning.

Upon asking Bridget about her teaching experience, she was excited to tell us all
about it:
Why do l teach? A good question! I teach as l enjoy the whole process, from the
challenge and excitement of designing a course, to breaking it down into lessons. I love
engaging learners, delivering the ideas and concepts which lead to the best, very best,
bit of my job, which is observing the difference the learning has made for individual
people.
I am immensely proud of all my learners. Some arrive very anxious, and others are
excited. They come from all walks of life and then study really hard and fit their
learning around all their other commitments.
I encourage my students to feel they can go on and succeed at whatever they wish.
Each learner has their own goals: it may be to feel better about themselves; to
look to the future with different and more positive eyes; or to progress with greater
confidence and motivation.
Learning opens doors, and for many of my learners, their positive and magnificent
determination and hard work has helped them move onto further education, training
and jobs.
That’s why l teach ... it’s great & completely rewarding.

Community
Interpreting

We offer Community Interpreting courses at various venues
across the region.

These provide opportunities for speakers of other languages to explore their skills,
abilities and interests in becoming community interpreters. The role of the community
interpreter is becoming increasingly important, particularly in areas with many linguistic
communities. The interpreter acts as a bridge between communities and enables people
to access services and situations which would otherwise not be possible.
Our courses can give you the chance to use your own life experiences and studies to
help others in a range of situations, enable you to improve your skills as a community
interpreter and enhance your employment prospects. You will learn the importance of
good communication skills and practicing confidentiality and impartiality. Our courses
are accredited by Certa at level 1 and 2; we expect to offer the level 3 Award in the
future.
*Students will undertake an initial assessment of their English skills and understanding of
public service terminology on the first session to determine their suitability for the course.

All courses are free to adults in receipt
of means tested benefits.
