Building confidence by
unearthing a hidden talent
Daisy is a single mum of two girls.
She was shy and nervous and
suffered from low self-esteem.
It was in her local community centre that
Daisy saw a poster advertising a sewing
group and she plucked up the courage to go
along.
At the start Daisy wasn’t confident enough to
do her work on her own; she received lots of
support on a one to one basis from her WEA
tutor and gained support from the group
demonstrations and student interactions.
Daisy soon learned new skills and her
confidence blossomed – making friends on
the course and discovering a hidden talent
that has empowered her to achieve more in
other aspects of her life.
Since attending the sewing course, Daisy
has not only achieved new skills and seen
an increase in her self-confidence she has
now continued her educational pathway
to gain greater qualifications including the
completion of the WEA’s ‘Volunteers Helping
in Schools’ course which revealed her desire
to work with children.
Daisy has now gained employment working
in a local primary school.
To be able to attend the sewing class
is so much more than attending any
class - it has given me the confidence
to learn new skills. I feel a sense of
achievement every time I finish a
garment…Best of all I am able to
share and pass on my skills to my
daughters who are also very proud of
their mummy’s work”.

It is full of smiling faces, and Bridget is getting her Helping in Schools class geared up for a game-based learning activity. The session has a lively start! A ball game is used for learning names, and physical, mental & emotional development are discussed. The ball game also highlights how gross motor skills and communication skills can be developed by children through active learning. Upon asking Bridget about her teaching experience, she was excited to tell us all about it: Why do l teach? A good question! I teach as l enjoy the whole process, from the challenge and excitement of designing a course, to breaking it down into lessons. I love engaging learners, delivering the ideas and concepts which lead to the best, very best, bit of my job, which is observing the difference the learning has made for individual people. I am immensely proud of all my learners. Some arrive very anxious, and others are excited. They come from all walks of life and then study really hard and fit their learning around all their other commitments. I encourage my students to feel they can go on and succeed at whatever they wish. Each learner has their own goals: it may be to feel better about themselves; to look to the future with different and more positive eyes; or to progress with greater confidence and motivation. Learning opens doors, and for many of my learners, their positive and magnificent determination and hard work has helped them move onto further education, training and jobs. That’s why l teach ... it’s great & completely rewarding.

Interpreting
We offer Community Interpreting courses at various venues
across the region.
These provide opportunities for speakers of other languages to explore their skills,
abilities and interests in becoming community interpreters. The role of the community
interpreter is becoming increasingly important, particularly in areas with many linguistic
communities. The interpreter acts as a bridge between communities and enables people
to access services and situations which would otherwise not be possible.
Our courses can give you the chance to use your own life experiences and studies to
help others in a range of situations, enable you to improve your skills as a community
interpreter and enhance your employment prospects. You will learn the importance of
good communication skills and practicing confidentiality and impartiality. Our courses
are accredited by Certa at level 1 and 2; we expect to offer the level 3 Award in the
future.
*Students will undertake an initial assessment of their English skills and understanding of
public service terminology on the first session to determine their suitability for the course.
All courses are free to adults in receipt
of means tested benefits.
