Rice & Carry was founded by Henry and Susi in 2 01 2 and employs over
2 5 women today. Everything sold under the Rice & Carry label has its origin
in waste such as discarded rice sacks or spice sacks.
The idea behind Rice & Carry is to create fair working conditions in the rural
East Sri Lanka and at the same time to propagate upcycling and recycling.
Since 2 01 8 all buckles on Rice & Carry bags are made entirely of plastic waste.
With the Waste Less Arugam Bay project plastic bottles are collected and
the buckles are recycled from the lids.
The idea behind Rice & Carry: to give things a new role and to actively
counteract the generation of waste.
Incidentally, Rice & Carry has been officially declared fair in 2 01 9:
the initiative became a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).
