The part of Vildmarksvägen over The Wilderness Road – doesn’t that sound tempting. A
road through the wilderness from Strömsund in Jämtland
Stekenjokk is open from early over the mountains to Vilhelmina in Lappland, and then
June till mid of October.
back to Strömsund via Dorotea and Hoting. The road pas-
ses through several places with exotic names like Gädde-
de, Stekenjokk, Klimpfjäll and Saxnäs.
The road goes through Lappland’s cultural districts, through alpine
forests and above the tree line – and the wilderness is just a hop, skip
and jump away. So the concept of “hiking by car” is very real. When
you get out of your car, you are in the wilderness...
Above the tree line are vast mountain heaths and accessible peaks.
The air is clear, the silence is deafening and the water is refreshing
and, of course, drinkable. Out with the mug!
Whether you head out on a multi-day hike with a tent or take a short
car trip, the Wilderness Road is the best way to get up above the tree
line.

Whether you start from Strömsund or
Vilhelmina, you pass through forest and
historic Sami mountain communities
before you reach the bare mountainside.
A good place to start is at Ströms hembygds-
gård in Strömsund, an open-air museum with
a picturesque central location on the shore of
Ströms Vattudal. The museum showcases the
region’s history with some 30 historic buildings
featuring exhibits and environments from days
gone by.

came to be strongly associated with Strömsund
– largely thanks to his animated film Dunder-
klumpen about Jorm the Giant, and his poems
about the Vattudalen region, but also through art,
music, theatre and television productions.
From there, drive north through the region with
the most brown bears in the whole world, and
pass the Hällingsåfallet waterfall.
Although really, ‘pass’ is the wrong word. Of
course you’ll stop at the 43-metre-high waterfall
crashing down into an 800-metre-long waterfilled
canyon. On a sunny day, you’ll see anywhere
from three to six rainbows in the water spray. Jorm the Giant from the children’s film Dunderklumpen welcomes

Frostviken Keramik, a few kilometres away, is a
must-see with its gorgeous hand-made ceramics
and summer café.

exhibition on the history and unique countryside
of Frostviken. The tourist office is surrounded by
