A Chat with your Incoming President
Today was perhaps only one of the few in recent weeks that I paused to be sure
I had an umbrella before heading out for errands. It’s been a long, dry spring so
grabbing it on the second day of summer seemed more celebratory than
burdensome. Why does it matter? That umbrella covers so many important
personal and business items that in a moment’s notice it becomes an essential
                                               part of my day.
Metaphorically, an umbrella has been the symbol of covering, protecting,
serving, and encompassing. Recently a colleague used an umbrella to describe
all of the ways our workplace unit serves our customers. I’m going to borrow her
creative idea and share who we are as the Allied Arts Council, the community’s
umbrella for the arts throughout St. Joseph.
By design, the Allied Arts Council brings people and the arts together. The AAC
provides an umbrella of advocacy, education, and service on behalf of all of
the arts throughout our community. Comprised of elected members and agency
representatives from our arts community, this group’s expertise gives the Allied
Arts Council a robust group of people who keep the arts alive and thriving.
By strategic design, the core business of the Allied Arts Council is to provide
advocacy on behalf of the arts in the national, state, and local arenas. The arts
are for all: the child, the young adult, the community, and the patron. Advocating is at the core of our work.
We are committed to actively impacting our youth through creativity and opportunity. Children and youth are the spirit
of art. Pablo Picasso said it best: Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. Try
something new. Pick up that old instrument. Find a watercolor pallet and paint. Pull out that old pair of dance shoes. Write
a poem. Audition for a play. Throw a pot! Find your art stroke and renew your love and skill. Refuse to grow up – at least
  as an artist.
Partnerships – that’s the new normal. We have numerous partnerships, including our member agencies. Together we are
better. Our member agencies offer stellar performances and presentations in many genres. There is always a way to bring
people and the arts together. The Allied Arts Council proudly provides an umbrella of advocacy, education, service, and
funding to support the arts throughout the St. Joseph community.
On behalf of the Allied Arts Council’s Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff, I welcome you to join us in
advocating, educating, and serving on behalf of the arts. We are the Allied Arts Council: We bring people and the arts
  together.
  Come grow with us!

Voice of the Arts 2018 Summer Edition - Allied Arts Council
Thank you for your continued support of the Arts in St. Joseph!
As this newsletter goes to press the Arts Fund Cabinet is still working to reach this year’s $225,000 goal, and
Arts Fund co-chairs Denise Meyer and Janie Findley want to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s
                                campaign.

They also want to thank all the hardworking volunteers who dedicated their time to this important endeavor.
The Arts Fund campaign wouldn’t be possible without the help of the volunteers, and it is through their efforts
that we are able to raise funds needed for the support of our funded agencies: Creative Arts Productions,

Close your eyes and imagine a newcomer to town on 2018- 2019
her first weekend in St. Joseph. Like many new to
a community, she drives around town, familiarizing Terms Expiring 2021
herself with the local hotspots. She comes to City
Hall where she sees SCADS of people everywhere! Bobbie Cronk– 1st Term
She doesn’t know there’s a park behind the hall or Bob Dempster – 2nd Term
that there’s an Arts and Music Festival. Does she find Liby Waltemath– 1st Term
a place to park and explore or turn around and go Robert Franzen – 1st Term
home? That was me in 2006. I should’ve found a Sam Ghatasheh– 1st Term
place to park, but I went home instead. By 2007 I
was a volunteer with the Festival and 12 years later, Nominative Committee
                                  I’m its chair.
                                                                                                          Brendon Clark
This is the 26th year of Trails West!® You’ll experience a few changes. Wrist bands Christina Lund
instead of buttons, a free day on Sunday, and a number of children’s activities join our Liby Waltemath
music line up, fine artists, folk artists and of course various food vendors. Terri Modlin
                                                                                                          Colleen Kowich
But, Trails West!® is more than just arts and music (Oh…it’s all about arts and music,
don’t misunderstand), but it’s also a celebration of St. Joseph. Our city and family Officers 2018-19
stages showcase our local talent such as story teller Will Stuck, the Missouri Western
theatre department and the St. Joseph Arts Academy. This year, you will be introduced President
to St. Joseph’s Uncommon Characters through oral history and characters that will Melody Smith
interact with you in period dress.
                                                                                                        1st Vice President
We also celebrate St. Joseph this year with a special day on Sunday. We are currently Shana Meyer
recruiting local merchants who sell hand made goods, locally sourced pre-packaged
food or locally sourced produce. Market Square will bring together our local merchants 2nd Vice President
under one tent so that you can visit with your favorite store owners and be introduced Alison Schieber
to new businesses.
                                                                                                            Treasurer
Trails West! is as much a part of this community’s history as Jesse James and Johnny
           ® Bob Dempster
Fry. At Trails West!® we learn about art, music and our community. If I could turn back
time, I’d tell that newcomer to find a parking space and come on in. Trails West!® is Secretary
not to be missed! Amy Basch

WHATS NEW TO TRAILS WEST!® THIS YEAR
