1.1 Purpose
This service catalogue is a description of information technology services that are available to staff
and students within Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) for the purpose of supporting academic
and commercial research projects/initiatives.
The services described are delivered and supported by Information Technology Services (ITS), VUW
Faculties/Institutes or external service providers.
This document provides an overview of available services, instructions on gaining access to services
and details on the support arrangements agreed for VUW customers utilizing the services.
1.2 Information Technology Services at VUW
ITS is the in-house information technology service provider for Victoria University. ITS supplies
proactive and reactive technology support services and is backed up by external service providers
through support maintenance agreements.
It is committed to helping customers achieve their objective using appropriate technologies. To
achieve this, ITS has adopted a partnering approach to its customer relationships. This is based on:
An open and constructive communication style
A commitment to, and promotion of, a customer service ethos
A proactive and shared approach to problem solving
Ensuring our stakeholders understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to available
services provided by ITS.

Business hours/After hours - ITS core business hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm
excluding public holidays. Unless specified, all services in this catalogue are available and fully
supported during core business hours. Services are available after hours and unless specified
support is provided on a next business day basis.
1.3 The School of Engineering and Computer Science at VUW
Staff in the School of Engineering and Computer Science are responsible for leading the
development of e-Research at Victoria. Staff participate in a number of national and international
forums with the goal of enhancing Victoria's research through better collaboration, and new and
improved tools.
With support from the Research Office and Faculty of Science the school has built a number of e-
Research services that are available to all Victoria staff.

The primary point of contact for research support is via the Research and Learning Services (RLS)
Team subject librarians. There are subject librarians for each school. The RLS team functions
include:
Primary communication channel between the Library Service and academic areas and
Central Service Units
Research support and consultancy services
Delivery and embedding of information literacy skills and learner support
Campus library services
Reference services
Effective Collection Development to ensure that Library resources are aligned with client
needs
RLS team proactively promotes Library services and resources to client groups and keeps up-to-
date with external developments.
Library Services also includes the Language Learning Centre in the Von Zedlitz Building and the New
Zealand Electronic Text Centre in the Rankine Brown Building.

1.5 New Service Requests or Requests for Information
If you require specific research services that are not listed within this service catalogue or would like
additional information on published services, ITS customer relationship co-ordinators would like to
discuss your research IT needs.
ITS customer relationship co-ordinators at Victoria University perform the following services for the
Victoria University research community -
Document and investigate new research service requirements
Aid in the planning and implementation of new research services
Provide advice and guidance on gaining access to existing published services
Overview existing services and match to personal research needs
Instigate procurement service to gather quotes and costing estimates for required research
applications or services
Liaise between internal or external research service providers and the individual researcher
or team

Research is recognised by Victoria University IT service providers as a core function of the
University, which, in conjunction with teaching and learning, creates and disseminates the
knowledge and understanding that Victoria provides to its local, national and international
communities.
The following services have been instigated to aid and assist in research projects, collaboration
and delivery. The services are delivered and supported by VUW and external service providers.
Available services have been documented to provide VUW customers with a central point of
information on research IT resources. All services listed are currently available and can be
accessed as per the service catalogue entry.

Description of Service:
The ITS Research Server is available to staff and post graduate by thesis students needing greater
processing power than is available on the current VUW desktops/laptops. The ITS Research Server also
hosts software that enables numerical/statistical analysis, compiling of source code, text editors,
programming languages and documentation software. Users access the service via SSH which enables a
secure tunnel connection to the server. The ITS Research Server runs on a Linux Redhat Operating System.
The software available on the ITS Research Server includes:
SAS (Statistical Analysis Software)
Fortran compilers, iFORT and GCC-Fortran (Compiler)
C and C++ compilers (Compiler).
Perl (Programming Language)
Python (Programming Language)
Tex and Latex (Technical and scientific documentation software)
GNUplot (Interactive Plotting Program)
Ssh/scp (Remote access protocol)
Vi, & vim (Text Editor)
Emacs, & xemacs (text editors and application development system)
Octave (Numerical Computation software)
Maple (Mathematical Computation Software)
Users can request new software to be installed on the server by logging a call with the ITS service Desk. ITS
will assess compatibility with current software and the server operating system before installing.
Please note: Software installed on the server cannot be restricted to a singular person or group.

Each user account is allocated 500mb of storage which is sufficient for most output of data. If you have
greater storage requirements please log a call via the ITS Service Desk.

Description of Service:
The School of Engineering and Computer Sciences (ECS) at Victoria University of Wellington currently
provide access to two Computing Grids; the SCS (Student Computer Services) Grid and the ECS (Engineering
and Computer Sciences) Grid.
Grid computing is a way of connecting computing resources over a network so that shared computing power
can process large-scale data and analysis tasks in hours, where as a single computer may take days or
weeks to process. Users who do a lot of computation may find grid computing beneficial to their research.
ECS Grid - Comprises of approximately 170 NetBSD (Unix operating system) workstations managed
by the Sun Grid Engine.
SCS Grid – Comprises of approximately 1000 ITS Student Computers running the Windows XP
operating system. This grid is managed by Condor.
Both Grids make use of the idle time on a large number of desktop workstations (cycle stealing).
Please note: grid computing resources are suspended when a machine is not idle, therefore the actual
number of available resources, and the run time of any grid computing job will vary with the number of PCs
being utilized.

Description of Service:
KAREN (Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network) provides fast, unrestricted broadband between
New Zealand’s tertiary institutions, research organisations, and the rest of the world. Data can be
transferred through KAREN at up to 10 gigabits a second (10,000 times the speed of a standard broadband
connection) enabling seamless two-way interaction and almost instantaneous sharing of data over long
distances.
KAREN members can connect to any other member organisation, available KAREN services or to
collaborators on other advanced networks internationally. As Victoria University is a member of the KAREN
community, connectivity to KAREN is offered as a service within the Universities network environment.
Services utilising KAREN at Victoria University include –
Access grid, video conferencing and Remote File Transfer System.
KAREN video conferencing bridge service
BestGRID and BlueFern supercomputer connectivity.
Desktop level connectivity to external resources provided by other KAREN members.
Customers:
Victoria University staff and students utilizing existing KAREN services or requiring new methods of
connectivity via KAREN.
External KAREN members collaborating or sharing resources with VUW via KAREN.
Access Request:
Victoria University staff and students – For existing services please review the VUW Research Service
Catalogue. ITS at Victoria University will accept new service requests for KAREN. Requests detailing your
KAREN requirements can be logged via the ITS Service Desk. As there is generally a level of collaboration
between KAREN members when a new service is requested, an ITS relationship co-ordinator will contact you
to discuss your requirements once logged.
External Clients – To connect to VUW via KAREN a VUW staff member must initiate connectivity via an
existing service or new service request.

Description of Service:
BeSTGRID is an online grid computing system used to aid researchers by delivering tools to facilitate
collaboration on shared information such as shared computational resources and online visualization of
instruments and experiments. BeSTGRID uses the KAREN network (high speed internet) to deliver this
functionality.
The main service offered via the BeSTGRID are:
Collaboration Grid - for enhancing collaboration amongst participants in multiple locations with
video-conferencing, shared whiteboards and presentations, visualization tools and project-based
online communities. Some of the tools available to aid collaboration are Evo, Sakai and
AccessGRID.
Computation Grid – enables the sharing of high-performance computational resources (initially
between Auckland, Massey and Canterbury)
Data Grid – enables large amounts of data to be stored and made available in other locations.

VUW Research Service Catalogue Page 10 of 19BlueFern e-Research Supercomputing Description of Service: BlueFern is a high performance e-Research computing services facility based at the University of Canterbury. As an academic-led initiative, BlueFern provides modern scientific computing capability and associated skills to New Zealand researchers and their partners. It is acting as a national facility through both BeSTGRID and direct accessibility via the KAREN network. Researchers can submit projects with high performance computing requirements to the facility and be provided with expert service and support. BlueFern have a host of applications available to utilize for research purposes as well as standard code compiling services. BlueFern is New Zealand’s most powerful supercomputing and services facility for research and development. Customers: All staff (including postgrad by thesis students) and students (undergraduate and postgraduate), delivering research and development projects with high performance computing needs. Access Request: Access to BlueFern e-Research services is granted via the completion of two online forms. The ‘Project Description Form’ overviews your research project and gathers technical requirements for new projects. The ‘Account Request Form’ creates account access to the service. Once these forms have been completed BlueFern staff will contact you to discuss your needs. Access Grid Video Conferencing
Description of Service:
Access Grid is the network of Access Grid Nodes that support group-to-group interactive communication
across high-speed networks over the internet. It provides high-quality audio and real-time video, allowing
groups at multiple sites to interact simultaneously, sharing both data and information.
An ‘Access Grid Node’ is a room and communication system set up for collaborative communication with
other Access Grid Nodes around the world. The Access Grid will support large-scale distributed meetings,
collaborative work sessions, seminars, lectures, tutorials, and training.
KAREN is the high-speed network used to facilitate these communication technologies in New Zealand and
overseas.
ITS Teaching Services has two permanent Access Grid facilities in Rankine Brown 106 and on the Pipitea
Campus at Railway 224.
Access Grid Nodes are also available in varying locations within New Zealand’s eight Universities and in 285
global locations across 28 different countries.
Customers:
All staff (including postgrad by thesis students) of Victoria University of Wellington wishing to host or
join an Access Grid video/voice conferencing session.
External customers wishing to host or join an Access Grid video/voice conferencing sessions with
Victoria University participants.

Description of Service:
The Remote File Transfer System service delivers an online method of transferring large research and
collaborative data via the World Wide Web. The service performs the following tasks:
Exchange files with other RMFT users or hosts
Upload and download files to and from a shared folder on the RMFT Server
Download files uploaded by other RMFT users
The solution does not have a specific file upload limitation, but storage is limited to 1.6 terra-bytes.
Uploaded files are stored for seven days then automatically deleted.
The service can be accessed within a web browser internally via the VUW network or externally via the
World Wide Web by entering the following URL – https://largefiles.victoria.ac.nz
Customers:
All staff (including postgrad by thesis students) of Victoria University of Wellington in need of
external file transfer.
Students (undergraduate and postgraduate) of Victoria University of Wellington and external
resources delivering electronic data into the Victoria University environment.

External Clients – External clients are granted temporary access to the Remote File Transfer System by
receiving an invitation to access the service by a Victoria University staff member.

Description of Service:
The Research Archive is managed by the Victoria University Library and contains VUW text base research
outputs including PhD and Master’s theses. The digitised collection is available online and showcases
individual research and the University as a whole. The Research Archive covers all subject areas the
University has on offer and includes PhD theses from 1947 through to present day.
Where the author has given permission the digitised PhD theses have been made publicly available. In other
cases they are only accessible to staff and students of Victoria University of Wellington. New PhD and
Master’s theses will be added to the archive as they are completed.

Description of Service:
The myExperiment Virtual Research Environment is a collaborative environment that enables users to share
digital items associated with fields of research, find publicly shared workflows, publish workflows or
experiment plans and share them with researchers and groups from around the world.
myExperiment makes it easy for researchers to contribute to a pool of scientific workflows, build
communities and form relationships. It enables scientists to share, reuse and repurpose workflows and
reduce time-to-experiment, share expertise and avoid reinvention.
The myexperiment.org social web site was launched in November 2007 with support for sharing research
workflows and now has around 1400 registered users, chiefly in the life sciences. myExperiment supports
workflows created with workflow systems such as Taverna, Trident and experiment plans. myExperiment
was created by a joint team from the universities of Southampton and Manchester in the UK.

Description of Service:
Microsoft SkyDrive provides users with 25 gigabytes of storage to upload their files to the internet, share
them with external contacts and then access them from a web browser. The maximum upload file size is
50MB. SkyDrive is a free service and is part of Microsoft’s Windows Live range of services.
The SkyDrive service utilizes Windows Live ID to limit access to the files the user has uploaded, allowing
them to keep the files private, share with contacts, or make the files public. Publicly-shared files do not
require a Windows Live ID to access.
SkyDrive will function via any internet connection and with any browser. Additional upload functionality using
the SkyDrive upload tool is only available on Windows PC’s utilizing Internet Explorer 6 or later.
Customers:
All staff (including postgrad by thesis students) and students (undergraduate and postgraduate) in
need of external file transfer or personal file storage.
External resources delivering electronic data into the Victoria University environment.
Access Request:
Victoria University staff – Browse to http://skydrive.live.com. If you have an existing Live account (e.g.
Hotmail), use this account to login. If not, select ‘Sign Up’ and use either an existing web email account or
your VUW email account to register. If registering your VUW email account, it is recommended to select a
different password than you use to logon to the VUW network.
Victoria University Students – Log onto your MyVuw email account. From the menu select ‘SkyDrive Online
Storage’.
Sharing files publicly – No Live account is needed, just forward a link to your online folder.
Sharing secure files – All collaborators will require Live accounts.

Description of Service:
An OptIPortal is a visualization cluster consisting of twelve LCD rear projection screens arranged in a 4x3
display. Each individual display is 2560x1600 pixels. This gives a combined display of 10240x4800 pixels.
The OptIPortals can be used in a wide variety of visualization approaches; viewing high definition static
images, video, or streaming media across one or more OptIPortals. The OptIPortal can also be used for
video conferencing and collaboration with other OptIPortals or other compatible devices (laptops, H.323
conferencing devices, etc.).
Some examples of how the OptIPortal is being used are:
Biological Sciences, e.g. confocal microscopy, Difference Gel Electrophoresis (DiGE) gels, protein
and gene network analysis, sea floor mapping
Earth Sciences, e.g. hydrological modeling
Chemical and Physical Sciences, e.g. nanotechnologies
Humanities disciplines like Art History and Classics where visual identification and examination are
crucial for research and education.
