ABOUT THE WALDO COUNTY YMCA
Beginning in 1977 as a “Y Without Walls”, our supportive community allowed
us use of their facilities as we worked toward building our own facility.

Capital Campaign Phase 1: In 1998, the Waldo County YMCA Board of Directors initiated a capital
campaign to raise funds to build the first phase of our facility. More than $4.7 million was raised through the
generous support from our entire community. The board planned the full-facility Y in phases to avoid incurring
long-term debt. Phase I was financed with a short-term loan against pledges. That loan was paid in full in
January 2004.
Capital Campaign Phase 2: June 17, 2009 we celebrated the opening of the Tom & Sally Savage Pool
Complex with community leaders, donors and contributors who donated $4.2 million to the pool complex
campaign this fulfilled our promise to provide a full service Y.

GIVE AND STRENGTHEN
                                               OUR COMMUNITY….
The Waldo County YMCA fundraises year-round partnering with individuals and businesses to provide financial
assistance to those in our community who need it the most.
Your support will have a lasting and positive impact on many lives.
Annual Campaign:
Our campaign begins in June but you do not have to wait until then to give. Sometimes a small amount over
several months works best and that can start at any time during the year. No amount is too small and will add
up to make a difference. You can help by contributing each year to this community effort.
Endowment:
What better way to leave a legacy than to support your YMCA’s Endowment Fund. You can make a lifetime gift
or bequest to strengthen and enhance the services of the Waldo County YMCA. Here are ways that you can
contribute to our endowment:
 A Will or Living Trust – a fixed amount, specific asset or percentage of estate.
 Cash – immediately improve the Y financial health & lower your income taxes.
 Charitable Trust or Annuity – direct a portion of your Charitable Trust or Life Time Annuity to our Y and
   receive a non-taxable charitable deduction .
 Life Insurance – Name our Y as primary or secondary beneficiary of your policy. Consider also contributing
a life insurance policy no longer needed to protect current beneficiaries and you could realize a substantial
   income tax deduction.
 Appreciated Assets - Contribute items such as stock or property you have owned for longer than a year
and receive a charitable deduction equal to the current value of the assets while avoiding capital gains tax.
Fundraising Events:
We host a variety of fundraising events throughout the year.
 Two Canoe Races in the spring, Golf Fore Kids! in September and a December Holiday Gathering.
 Looking for something different? We also have hallway auctions, dine-outs, a pancake breakfast and the
Darlings Ice Cream For a Cause Truck stops by at the end of summer camp.
Good times for a great cause!
Financial Assistance:
We welcome ALL who wish to participate and believe that no one should be excluded from our programs,
activities or events based on their ability to pay. Support from our community enables us to make the “Y” an
experience for all, regardless of financial situation.
We offer Financial Assistance through reduced membership and program fees. Applications are always 100%
confidential. Forms can be found at our Front Desk or on our website. For additional questions or to set up a
meeting to discuss financial assistance, please contact our Membership Director, Bruce Osgood at
207.338.4598 or bosgood@waldocountyymca.org.

A GREAT PLACE TO GROW
We believe young children learn through play and hands on experience. All of our childcare options offer
supportive learning for their social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. We provide options for children
from 8 weeks to grade 5 as well as a teen program for grades 6 - 12. See page 19 for Babysitting.
With our focus on YOUTH DEVELOPMENT we also follow and demonstrate the four core values of
Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility. See page 3for details.

drop off starting at 7:00 a.m. where children ease into the day with games, coloring, play centers and friendship.
They will be escorted to the bus for a busy day of learning at school and brought back to the YMCA after the
last bell of the day.
Our extended care hours are available until 5:30 p.m. and will be spent building self-esteem, values and
leadership skills. You will know your children are growing and exploring their potential; they will think they are
just having fun. We offer developmentally-appropriate activities that will enhance your child’s confidence, enrich
their social and physical development and encourage self-expression. Your child will be provided with a healthy
after school snack in line with the 5210 LET’S GO! program.

TEEN TIME
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR GRADES 6 - 12
Youth today are navigating a difficult bridge into adulthood and we want to help them get across safely. During
the school year we welcome all middle and high school students to participate in our TEEN TIME Program at
the Y, Monday - Friday, 2:20 to 5:30 p.m.
As a result of continued generosity from the City of Belfast, students are invited to join the program with their
own NO-COST TEEN ACCESS MEMBERSHIP. This membership is separate from our youth or family
memberships and is only for enrollment into the TEEN TIME program.
TEEN TIME Program includes privileges like:
 Access to the Teen Room to hang out with friends, play pinball, foosball or complete homework.
 Team gym/outdoor games – kickball, floor hockey, ultimate ball, dodgeball, etc.
 Small group activities – card/board games, table games, scavenger hunts, etc.
 Large group activities – multi-day group challenges/tournaments
 Leadership opportunities – P.L.A.Y. Group, teen dance design facilitation, etc.
 Monthly TEEN TIME Town Hall meetings to celebrate, check-in and build community.
 Teen open swim and specialty fitness classes.
 Buddy Reading with YMCA preschool students.
 Community service – within the YMCA and in the greater Belfast community.
 Friday evening Teen Dances throughout the school year.
 And much more based on teen interest!

P.L.A.Y. Group – PEER LEADERSHIP AT THE Y
 A NEW program for middle school students designed to develop leadership skills and offer opportunities to
practice leadership within their peer group.
 This is an opportunity for middle school teens to share ideas about how to enhance TEEN TIME, which
activities they would like to offer and participate in and empower teens with the skills needed to make
    positive changes.
 Spring 2019 Pilot P.L.A.Y. Group started in response to teen interest in designing decorations and
providing a snack table for the final Teen Dance of the school year. P.L.A.Y. Leaders collected peer
requests for dance theme, met multiple times during school lunches at T.H.M.S. to coordinate plans,
decorated the YMCA before the dance, sold snacks during the dance and cleaned the facility when the
dance finished. The group also met after the dance to reflect on what worked, what they wanted to improve
and brainstorm ideas for future dances.
 Beginning Fall 2019, TEEN TIME staff members meet regularly with interested P.L.A.Y. Leaders during
school lunchtimes to foster Peer Leadership growth and will facilitate leadership opportunities as a part of
TEEN TIME. Activities will be determined based on teen interest, though may include facilitation of teen
dances, collection of snacks for TEEN TIME members, coordination of community service projects that
support the YMCA facility and programming.

TEEN DANCES
Our TEEN TIME Dances are open to all Waldo County Middle School Students. They are held on select Friday

Youth Ballet
These fun filled classes are designed for ages three - 12. Taught by Michele Cox, Director of P2P Dance
Center and Atlantic Ballet Company, each class is filled with music and movement. Dancers begin with
stretches to encourage length of legs, good mobility and various positions of the torso. Dancers continue
with plies, tendus and other exercises strengthening their legs, lifting their torsos and preparing to balance
on one foot (such as in one foot turns). The two most exciting movements for young dancers are turns and
jumps so we will practice whirling turns, such as pique turns, chaines turns, step over turns & pirouettes.
Many dancers, as young as three, strive for performance opportunities. P2P Dance and Atlantic Ballet
Company's performances include Nutcracker in December and a spring performance that include all P2P

    PEDALING FOR
    PARKINSON’S
PROGRAM We are proud to announce our newest
program PEDALING FOR PARKINSON’S. If you, or someone you know has Parkinson’s disease, this program has
been proven to help afflicted patients delay and in some cases improve their symptoms.
Parkinson’s disease is caused by a breakdown in the nerve cells in the brain. The affected nerve cells do not
produce enough dopamine, which affects your ability to move the ways you want. Tremors, stiff muscles, slow
movement and trouble with balance or walking are all symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
PEDALING FOR PARKINSON’S MISSION:
 To improve the quality of life of Parkinson’s disease patients and caregivers.
 To educate patients, caregivers and the general public about the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle
after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
 To support research dedicated to the prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

    PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
 30 - 75 years old (or older with physician approval).  Complete and provide a signed consent form.
 Diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.  Agree to periodically monitor progress.
 Complete and provide a signed medical clearance form.

Parkinson’s patients with the following medical conditions are not eligible for this program:
 Cardiac or pulmonary disease.  Uncontrolled hypertension/stroke.
 Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.  Dementia.
