Chief Editor’s Message
It’s been a year since the first Nest Garage magazine came out. The magazine serves as a centre point of new
knowledge that is created and merged by diverse players in Japan and Southeast Asia. In this Nest Garage issue,
we provide the updates of every program that has been carefully curated in our effort to bridge the Science and
Technology divide while identifying deep issues within the society. We are calling for the Southeast Asian region to
rise up and grab the chance to be actively involved either as our program partner or participant in the year 2020.
You will have the chance to make new industry or academia contacts, spot the sprout of potential decacorns that
can turnaround business in the new decade, decide the right country to enter or share groundbreaking research
findings with future investors and partners. All of this can be achieved through Hyper Interdisciplinary Conference,
Career Discovery Forum, TECH PLANTER, and how to go to Japan market. I hope you will find hidden gems in the
programs that match with your interest and join us in Advancing Science and Technology for Global Happiness.

                                                                                                   Idarahayu Ayob

There will be 2nd batch in 2020 summer too!

Why Japan?
Although Japan is known as shrinking market, Japan is an interesting market for startups as it has a
population close to one billion and having a matured market. In addition to this Japanese companies
are now focusing more on collaboration with domestic and international startups for open innovation.
As Japan is a single cultural country it is also easier for international startup to spread the business after
setting one successful entry point. However there is challenging hurdle for international startup to go
enter this fruitful market due to its language barrier and difference in business culture. It is very difficult
for the international startup to enter by themselves without connections in Japan.

This time Leave a Nest and Enterprise Singapore will conduct together a supporting program for
Singaporean startups to help them enter Japanese market.

simple but if it can be used as a solution to address deep issues around the world, this
is what Leave a Nest is looking for. In TECH PLANTER, we aim to support Deep-Tech
researchers and startups who aim to solve different societal problems through their
