From the board president & General Manager:
Club summer forecast: bright & Sunny
Last May, it was impossible to forecast what the future would look like for the
Club. We made changes and adjustments to operations, services and pro-
gramming, and our Club community pulled together to get through a difficult
situation. The Club was able to stay open and active.
This May, as we prepare for the summer of 2021, the outlook for the Club is
bright. Not only are we offering the majority of our regular and ongoing ser-
Liz Lacy
Board President vices, starting this season, we are adding new programs and services to en-
hance the member experience. Some of the highlights include:
• New operating hours for the Wave Café which will offer service from the
beginning of April through the end of October with an added grab-n-go
menu designed to allow members playing golf, tennis or using the fitness
facility to get a quick hot dog or other snack.
• Family Fun Days at the pool with family activities, creative menus and
music.
Chris Welles
Chief Operating Officer • A full-time starter at the golf course to allow monitoring tee times and
pace of play.
• A variety of outdoor exercise classes such as cardio interval, boot camp
and a high intensity core workout called Tabata.
• A youth conditioning program for our members ages 8-12.
• Pickleball events and socials on the outdoor hard courts which now have
permanent painted pickleball lines, and pickleball equipment available at
the Tennis Pro Shop.
• New and improved furniture for the pool deck, including increased shad-
ed areas.
As the Club opens up these new offerings and more, we recognize that COV-
ID is still a reality and will continue to affect some of the ways we required to
and choose to do business. We continue to take steps necessary to keep our
member families and staff safe.
We are also aware that COVID has had an impact on the usage of Club facili-
ties. The golf course, tennis courts and outdoor dining have never been busier.
The Board of Directors and Management recognize that there are challenges
that come with the added traffic. To that end, the Board has adopted a stra-
tegic goal this year to undertake a Capacity Study. The study will gather
data showing actual capacity and usage of Club facilities. It will provide vital
information for making future decisions on managing facility use, expand-
ing or changing programming to better meet the needs and expectations of
membership. We will continue to keep you updated as this work is completed
through the course of the year.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the new events or just enjoying the
Club this summer. As always, your support of the Club is appreciated.Contents Willow Oaks Club News • May/June 2021

Charlie Verdery
Member Since 1994
Charles “Charlie” Stewart Verdery of Hanover, VA, passed
away on March 17, 2021 at the age of 79 in Richmond, VA
following a short and intense battle with cancer.
Charles was many things – a very successful businessman,
an athlete and competitor, a nature lover, a collector, a
blend of thriftiness and generosity, a man of habit who
also liked to explore, and above all a family man. He is
survived by his wife of 32 years, Martha Mebane Verdery.
Charlie and Marty had a wonderful marriage, full of trips
to Nags Head, birding trips across the country, dog walks,
and watching and debating ACC sports. Meals on the
back deck while birdwatching was a favorite pastime
for decades. He will be missed greatly by his family, co-
workers, and numerous friends across wide ranges of
geography, age, and station in life.

The twin 65s were one shot short of claiming individual four-ball medalist honors. That went to Cedar Point Club’s Matt Grandy and Del Baker, who posted an 8-under 64. Still, those two 7-under scores together gave Willow Oaks the winning edge. Willow Oaks’ victory continued a string of dominance for Richmond-area clubs in the event, which was being played for the first time since 2019 after being canceled last April due to the coronavirus pandemic. get to know harrison brink
This month, we would like to highlight Harrison Brink,
NHGA Golf Pro and Assistant Pro at Willow Oaks.
This is Harrison’s second season with us and we are
delighted to be able to work with him once again. He is
an outstanding young man who truly loves the game of
golf!
Harrison was born in 1993 and grew up in
Chambersburg, PA until he was 17 years old. He has a
younger sister, MacKenzie. During the '80s, his father
owned a golf shop in Chambersburg. Harrison started
hitting golf balls at the age of 2 ½.
He attended Mercersburg Academy where he was a
4-sport athlete: basketball, baseball, soccer and golf.
While at Mercersburg his golf coach, Rev. Paul Galey,
recognized Harrison's talent for the game of golf over
the other sports. He told Harrison that he would be
playing golf not baseball in college. Unfortunately,
during his senior year in high school Harrison tore his
ACL and was not able to join the golf team at Furman
University, where he attended college. At the beginning
of his senior year at Furman, Harrison finally “walked on”
Harrison Brink to the school’s golf team.
For a few years after college Harrison worked as a
liaison between alumni and potential new students at
Mercersburg Academy. During this time he also played
golf professionally. In 2018 while watching the Ryder
Cup, he realized he wanted to be back in the world of
coming up: golf full time. After deciding to make golf his career, he
JULY 20 applied for the position of Assistant Golf Pro at Willow
Invitational at the Dominion Oaks. He is motivated by the Club's atmosphere, its
Club Southern-style charm, friendliness and its year round
golf season. Of course, Richard White hired him!

2. Harrison has many special interests including singing, piano, guitar, physical
fitness, hiking and video games. He also enjoys reading books. He will read
anything from the Italian Renaissance to Stephen King.
3. The two most influential people in his life are his parents. His father, who was on
the Duke golf team, instilled in him his love for golf, and he was Harrison’s coach.
His mother gave him the motivation for attentiveness to people’s needs.
4. Harrison played professionally on several developmental tours. He won one
tournament in the SwingThought Tour at Monroe Country Club in North Carolina
(near Charlotte).
5. He broke 80 when he was 11 years old on a Par 73 course. He played “under par”
competitively when 16 years old.
6. He became a Scratch golfer at 18 years old.
Harrison’s goals for the future
1. Become a Head Golf Professional or Director of Golf Instruction at a well
established, top tier golf club.
2. Participate in a PGA Championship.
3. Play 200 different golf courses before the age of 30. Currently he has played 140!
In summing up our interview, Harrison said “I am extremely comfortable with my
knowledge of the (golf) game and my ability to positively impact people’s lives
through the medium of golf.”
We are lucky to have Harrison as one of our Assistant Golf Pros. We look forward to
working with him throughout this golf season.

Reflections on the place and game we love
As we gradually come out of the pandemic year (plus) and transition to a more typical set of playing
parameters, I thought it was a good time to ask our LGA members “As you think about your rela-
tionship with golf and WOCC over the years, what are you most proud of or pleased about?” The
overwhelming majority spoke of the fun, challenge and camaraderie as well as enduring relationships
and opportunities for new friendships. Some were pleased to have contributed to women’s golf at the
Club as Board members, LGA officers, golf team captains or members. Everyone agreed it’s just great
to be out on the course with each other:
>> “I love the ‘power’ of the women that make up the LGA. No shrinking violets in this crowd! Fun,
athletic and competitive — perfect combination!”
>> “Being a part of the ‘women golfing folks’ — not just the team, LGA or 9-Holers, but all women
golfers. A diverse, collegial, competitive and fun-loving group!”
>> “I am proud of how much my focus is on just having fun, being outside and enjoying the mental
challenges of the game.”
>> “I am pleased that I have never gotten tired of the WOCC course.”
>> “The way golf has been a gateway to making so many new friends.”
>> “I am very proud of the inclusive attitude of our golf groups. I love playing in both 18 hole and 9
hole groups.”
>> “Proud of still hanging in there as my handicap increases!”
>> “People here are fun to be with, and I appreciate the staff and wonderful golf course by the
river.”
>> “The warmth of the membership.”
>> “The beauty of the course.”
>> “What a great group of competitive, funny, lovely women golfers!”
Indeed! Stay tuned for the next issue of Club News where we will highlight what LGA members had
to say about their dad’s influence on their game, what their favorite WOCC holes are and what adjust-
ments they’d make to the course, if only they could.

Tish Moore said “I never met a kinder or more confident woman who always had a smile.” Marg

of holes-in-one over the years. She once offered this advice to Mary Bliley about that “Mary, you’ll
never get a hole-in-one if you don’t aim for the hole!” Finally not only was Peggy known for being
one of the few women to carry her own bags, she also made all her own golf shorts. We will miss

tackling tiebreakers
Stavros Michalopoulos, Director of Rackets
In USTA Leagues, players will often have to play a match tiebreaker to
10 points instead of a full third set. Use the following steps to help you
manage this stressful aspect of the game.
Step 1
Take a small break right after the end of the second set if it is not a
timed match. You can take a break to reset your mind from negative
thoughts and start evaluating your strategy.

No matter of the order, to get to the match tie break you won a set and

a high caliber professional on the team. We are excited that Stavros has accepted the
position and look forward to his continued work with the Club's tennis program.
10 tips for pickleball beginners
• Get to the non-volley line as fast as you can. This puts you in the strongest position.
• Use your touch shots. Pickleball is more about placement than power.
• 75% of rallies are lost due to an unforced error. Keep the ball in play and let your oppo-
nents make mistakes.
• Practice your dinks, both cross court and straight ahead. Be patient and try to avoid
popping the ball up.
• Develop a drop shot. This shot is vital when both of your opponents are at the non-
volley line.
• Remember to split step. Like tennis when your opponent is about the strike the ball
split step so that you are ready to move to play the next shot.
• A pickleball paddle is much shorter than a tennis racquet. You will need to be closer to
the ball and keep your eyes on it through the shot.
• Add a little more loft to your return and hit it deep giving you time to reach the non-
volley line. Unlike tennis the serving team cannot poach your return, they must let your
return bounce.
• Don’t try for too much on your serve. You only get one serve in Pickleball so make sure
you put the ball in play.
• Depth is key with your serve as you want to keep the returner back to slow their ad-
vance to the non-volley line.
