World Suicide Prevention Day 2021 –

Monday 6th

Real-time Suicide Surveillance         11-12noon      Showcasing the latest suicide data, patterns, and emerging themes from Leicestershire, with a
                                                      focus on the pandemic.
The Tomorrow Project: Offering a       1-2pm          In this session we will introduce The Tomorrow Project – a clinical support service commissioned
Community Response to Suicide                         locally to deliver a community-based response to those affected or bereaved by suicide (including
                                                      training). We will talk through who we are and what we do to offer an insight into our service
                                                      model, including how we work with those affected by suicide and who have we supported locally.
                                                      This will include some testimonials from those we’ve supported.
United Leicester: elite sports clubs   2-2.30pm       Under the United Leicester branding the following community foundation’s, Leicester City in the

                                                      The sessions will run through the aim of the website, and how to refer to activities delivered by
                                                      each club.
                                                      • A branded portal to attract fan’s and supporters and signpost to existing services and access to
                                                      the champions cinema.
                                                      • We aim to bridge the gap between someone struggling and them taking a first step to seeking
                                                      the support they need.
                                                      • The portal is mobile friendly using high quality video’s impact is immediate, emotions are stirred,
                                                      content is relatable and not limited by language or accessibility – the perfect medium for
                                                      communication.
                                                      • Showcasing the lived experience of those that have faced life’s challenges and overcome them
Male Suicide: ‘The biggest killer of   3-4pm          The biggest killer of men under 50 is suicide, and nearly 3/4 of all suicides are men and 75% of men
men aged 18-50’                                       do not seek help before taking their lives. This study aims to :
                                                      • Identify and raise awareness of prevention services available in Leicester/ Leicestershire.
                                                      • Identify potential barriers that prevent men from coming forward for help
                                                      • Give a voice to people who have contemplated, or attempted suicide or family members
                                                      bereaved by suicide to share their experiences.
                                                      • Consider a range of tools to raise awareness of the support available to men in crisis.
Suicide Prevention Workshop          5.30-7pm     This workshop focusses on building our knowledge and understanding of Suicide Prevention.
                                                  The workshop is interactive and has various discussion points throughout. Within the session, we
                                                  share some general information and facts about suicide, to increase awareness and understanding.
                                                  We then share various tools and interventions that can be helpful in suicide prevention. We teach
                                                  participants how to effectively utilize these interventions, so that they can be taken away and
                                                  practiced.

Developing Connectedness             11-11.45am   In a world where technology has enabled us to connect to each other so easily, why are feelings of
                                                  being disconnected & isolated more prevalent? At Samaritans we talk about the uniqueness of our
                                                  callers, but there is a common thread to so many of our calls, and that is feeling lonely, detached &
                                                  isolated from society. How can we all through action, develop ways in which we can be more
                                                  inclusive?

Managing Critical Incidents within   1-2.30pm     This session aims to support schools in their preparation for a Critical Incident and to ensure
Schools and other Educational                     effective management in a difficult situation. This session will answer:
Settings                                          • What is a Critical Incident?
                                                  • In order to feel prepared, what can schools and other educational settings do before a Critical
                                                  Incident?
                                                  • When a Critical Incident happens, what can schools and other educational settings do to support
                                                  their community?
                                                  • Following a Critical Incident, what can schools and other educational settings do to support their
                                                  community?
                                                  • How can the Educational Psychology Service support schools and other educational settings?
An Introduction to Suicide          5-7pm         Suicide should be a concern to all of us. To increase awareness - and to help remove the stigma
Awareness                                         which can be a barrier for those in need of help - this free session should interest anyone who
                                                  wishes to examine their own attitudes and to potentially help someone in distress. A gentle
                                                  introduction to the subject, it is open to all - including local community volunteers and members of
                                                  the public, as well as those whose main role is likely to bring them into contact with those at
                                                  greater risk. Delivered by the Rural Community Council (Leicestershire & Rutland).
New Peer Support Group Launch       6.30-8.30pm   The newest Peer Support Group for Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) will launch in
                                                  Leicester on Tuesday 7th September at 6:30pm. The launch will be held at the Peepul Centre on
                                                  Orchardson Ave, in Leicester, LE4 6DP.
                                                  We would welcome along to the launch event anyone working in a professional capacity who
                                                  encounters people who have been bereaved by suicide. There will be an opportunity to meet the
                                                  Leicester team and talk to them about the plans they have to run this exciting new service in
                                                  Leicester. There will also be other charity staff on hand to explain about the other ways the charity
                                                  delivers support such as the National helpline, the Email Support Service, and the Punjabi Speaking
                                                  Women's Group.
Mindfulness with Cleo               8-8.30pm      Give mindfulness a go. Join the session with Cleo to learn more about mindfulness and how it can
                                                  benefit your wellbeing.

Wednesday 8th

Mensoar: Why it’s good for men to   10-11am       Three Eggs are working with Leicestershire County Council to support men’s mental health across
talk                                              the county. During this session, we will introduce our programme for the next 12 months and the
                                                  different activities that we will be hosting. Our Clinical Psychologist, Dr Joanna Baines will explain
                                                  why getting men talking can make a real difference to their mental health and how the Mensoar
                                                  project aims to encourage conversation.
NHS IAPT Service Overview           11-12noon     VitaMinds began providing the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) service in April
                                                  2021. IAPT is a service that offers cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), guided self-help and group
                                                  therapy sessions for people with mild to moderate mental health conditions.
                                                  In this session we will be:
                                                  • delivering an overview of IAPT and what’s new to the service,
                                                  • introducing our partners,
• talking about the work we are and will be doing across communities within the county
                                                  We hope to provide a good understanding of IAPT and improve the overall knowledge of what the
                                                  service offers.
Wellbeing break: Yoga for All         1-2pm       Grant yourself space to nurture and nourish yourself through yoga practice. The session will
                                                  explore movement and stillness through yoga postures, breath work, visualisation and guided
                                                  relaxation. No prior experience required.
Where can I get support locally for   3-4pm       This session will be facilitated by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust in partnership with Turning
my mental health?                                 Point and the Loughborough Wellbeing Project to give the public/professionals information about
                                                  how they can access support for mental health for themselves/others. We will discuss the two new
                                                  services that were set up at the start of the pandemic, the Mental Health Central Access Point and
                                                  Mental Health Urgent Care Hub. Information will be provided on the crisis cafés (current and
                                                  future plans).
Suicide: Staff Support & Wellbeing    4-5pm       This session is an interactive discussion with presentation about the needs of staff who work
Response                                          within suicide prevention roles broadly and/or staff who work with people experiencing suicidal
                                                  thinking. This session will seek to explore issues around postvention peer support, ‘de-briefing’,
                                                  continued support following a death and the need for self-care and compassion. It is an
                                                  introductory conversation about processes and policy that would help us to take care of ourselves
                                                  and each other and consider what type of responses might be helpful to provide support and
                                                  wellbeing as individuals, teams and organisations.

Thursday 9th

Dual Diagnosis: meeting the needs of 10-10.30am   This session will cover issues related to substance misuse and mental health and discuss a
co-morbid substance misuse and                    partnership between mental health services and substance misuse providers working together to
mental health service users                       meet the needs of this client group. It will highlight the need to work together and demonstrate
                                                  how partnerships can make a difference to outcomes for service users. This partnership includes
                                                  Peer mentors within its delivery model.
HM Veterans Suicide Prevention:       2-2.45pm    How can a virtual platform aimed at HM Veterans be a tool to help prevent Veterans to die by

                                                  improve Mental Health and reduce social isolation?
How can I access longer term           3-4pm       This session will be hosted by the Loughborough Wellbeing Centre. The session will provide

Focus Group: Postvention support       6-7pm       The Suicide Audit and Prevention Group (SAPG) in the city and county is holding a small focus
for BAME communities following                     group with members of BAME communities with lived experience of bereavement, attempted
suicide                                            suicide, and suicidal ideation, to gather their views and experience of support services and where
                                                   the gaps are.
                                                   The feedback from the focus group will be shared via a paper to the strategic group to consider as
                                                   part of further consultation, review, and development of services.
                                                   We would like those with lived experience of suicide belonging to BAME communities to attend
                                                   this focus group.
                                                   The session will be facilitated by Davinder Singh Dhesi and Mo Bham from the Leicester City
                                                   Psychology Service.

Friday 10th – World Suicide Prevention Day 2021

Wellbeing break: Therapeutic breath    8-9am       Begin your day with a simple guided breathing practice to gently increase vitality and clarity of
work & guided meditation                           mind. Discover the practice of lovingkindness through a guided meditation to support physical,
                                                   mental and emotional well-being. No prior experience required.

Understanding anxiety and           2-2.30pm        As an IAPT provider, VitaMinds supports those experiencing anxiety, low mood, and depression
depression                          *pre-recorded   amongst other mental health conditions. We believe in making people better and we understand
                                    video           that preventing symptoms from worsening, can lead to prevention of more moderate to intense
                                                    mental health conditions.
                                                    Spotting signs of anxiety and/or depression can be difficult for some, here we will be talking about
                                                    some of the most common symptoms to be aware of and some of the coping mechanisms that can
                                                    be used to manage symptoms.
Introduction to Crisis Management   3-5pm           An introduction to crisis management which aims to teach people practical coping strategies to
Skills                                              help manage distress and prevent people from acting on thoughts of self-harm and suicide. Key
                                                    concepts such as distress tolerance, emotional regulation and mindfulness will be explored. This is
                                                    a practical session to teach people applied skills; however, it would be beneficial for professionals
                                                    to attend and build knowledge on how to support those that they work with.
Suicide Bereavement Awareness       6-7pm           In this session we will explore the wider impact of suicide. This includes exploring the magnitude of
                                                    suicide, understanding suicide as a form of traumatic bereavement, common responses to loss
                                                    through suicide, bereavement as a risk factor for crisis, and how to respond to/support someone
                                                    bereaved or affected by suicide.
Mindfulness with Cleo               8-8.30pm        Give mindfulness a go. Join the session with Cleo to learn more about mindfulness and how it can
                                                    benefit your wellbeing.
