w/b Monday 25th January

L.O. I am learning to read fluently and accurately, developing my
comprehension.
Text: The Light Jar.
Author: Lisa Thompson.

The chicken was sitting on the back doorstep and she squawked
when I rushed inside, my wet feet skidding on the kitchen floor. I ran up to Mum’s room and
Year 3 Home learning Packs - Amber Pack Spring 1 - Week 4
grabbed the bag, which I’d emptied apart from one thing. I sat on her bed and slowly undid
the zip. There it was, nestling in the corner as if it had been waiting for me all this time. My
birthday gift. My birthday gift from my mum. I carefully undid the sticky tape and beneath
the blue, spotty wrapping paper were layers and layers of yellow tissue, protecting
whatever was inside. I unpeeled them one by one, my hands trembling, and then finally,
there it was.

My present.

It was a light jar.

The most beautiful light jar I had ever seen. My heart pounded as I unscrewed the silver lid
and took out the little bunch of light. I found the switch and clicked it on and the tiny bulbs
twinkled against the glass. It looked magical.

      • Rainforest cover 2% of the worlds surface but they hold 50% of the world’s plants
            and trees.
      • Most animals live in the canopy layer of the rainforest which is 30m in the trees.
      • Animals rely on singing and calling to each other as the leave are so dense in the
            canopy.
      • Trees are straight and tall as they need to reach the sunlight.
      • Rainforests protect the health of the planet.

Year 3 Home learning Packs - Amber Pack Spring 1 - Week 4
Monday 25th January 2021.
Micro Question 1: How does light travel?
Let’s recap our learning about light.
What can you remember about light? Write down all your ideas on the mind map below.
Think about when we looked at light and dark.

                        Light.

Watch the video below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbssgk7/articles/z2s4xfr

Read the information and answer the questions underneath.

Light is a type of energy that makes it possible for us to see the world around
us. We need light to see. Light comes from different sources called light
sources; our main natural light source is the sun. Other sources include fire,
stars and man-made light sources such as light-bulbs and torches.

Some animals, such as fireflies and glow-worms, are light
sources. Plants use light to make food and grow. Without
light, we wouldn’t have anything to eat as plants are an
important source of food for humans and animals.

                                                                     Glow-worms in a cave.
Year 3 Home learning Packs - Amber Pack Spring 1 - Week 4
Light travels in a straight path called a ray. It travels faster than anything else
on our planet! It travels so fast that it takes just 8 minutes for light from the
sun to reach Earth! The sun is 93 million miles away from Earth!

Now, answer the questions. Hint: the answers are in the text!

        Watch the video:

        https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgdmsbk/articles/z7by92p

The eye is a ball with a hole at the front, the pupil covers the hole and lets in light.
The iris surrounds the pupil, this is the coloured part of our eye.

Inside the eye is a lens which helps to focus the light onto a surface at the back of
                            the eyeball.

                                                                                  Retina

The back of the eyeball is called the retina and is made up
                            of lots of special cells.
These cells detect light and send messages
to our brain, allowing us to see.

How does light help us to see?

                                                               1. Light rays from the light bulb

Micro Question 3: Which materials absorb light and which materials reflect light?

We are going to do an experiment over the next 2 days! Watch the YouTube video: Year 3
Science – Light lesson 3 & 4 where I will explain in more detail what you need to do!
For this lesson you will need a torch, this can be the torch that is on a mobile phone if you
                                              don’t have one.

Watch the video:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbssgk7/articles/zqdxb82

                                             What is reflection?

Light travels in a straight line. When light hits an object, it is
reflected (bounces off). If the reflected light hits our eyes, we
can see the object. Some surfaces and materials reflect light
well. Other materials do not reflect light well.

We will be testing which objects absorb light and which
objects reflect light. First, we will need to write step by step
instructions (a method) for how we are going to do the
experiment.

Write your instructions below.
You can use this to help you.

Make sure you are writing your method in your own words.

Method.

We need to decide which objects we are going to test. These are going to be things you have in your
house.

Write a list of 5 objects below, I’ve given you one.

    1. Exercise book
    2. _________________________________

    5. _________________________________

What will your variable be? Remember a variable is something that will change. We only want one
variable.

__________________________________________________________________________________
______________

Thursday 28th January 2021.

Write a prediction for the experiment. What do you think will happen?

For example: I think that the exercise book will absorb the light because the surface of the book is
not shiny.

Let’s fill in our results table!

Your headings for each column are object, prediction, absorbed and reflected.

                                                 Results.

    Object
    Exercise Book Absorbed
                                     Reflected

                                      Let’s do the experiment.

In order to test the materials, you will need to make a reflection
tester.

Attach the piece of card in your pack to a torch:

    1. Cut a hole in the centre of the card and push the torch
through so that the card fits snugly around the torch without
you having to hold it. If you are using a phone then you may
       have to hold the card.
    2. Shine the torch at the material you are testing.
    3. If the material reflects light well, you will see the reflected
light shine through the white card and light it up.
    4. Record your results in your table.

                                              It was a light jar.

The most beautiful light jar I had ever seen. My heart pounded as I unscrewed the silver lid and
took out the little bunch of light. I found the switch and clicked it on and the tiny bulbs twinkled
against the glass. It looked magical.

How does the narrator feel about receiving the light jar as a present? How do you know?

Make an information poster to teach next year’s Year 3 pupils about light. It will be placed on our

and presentation.

You can use the information in this pack, or any facts you can remember from earlier in the year
such as how to keep your eyes safe from the sun, or which activities are better in the light/dark
(like fireworks).
Don’t forget to send your finished poster to year3@mpjs.org.uk, your teachers will be looking
forward to seeing them!
