“When you are at home, your troubles can never defeat you.” “If an opportunity is not taken when it comes, it passes away” —Ghanaian proverbs This February of 2022 was to be the kickoff of the first of three Sankofa Seasons, our vision for the next three years of True Colors programming. In Twi, the language of Ghana, “sankofa” means “to retrieve” and the adinkra symbol tells us that looking to the past will help us advance in the future. The plays of this first Sankofa Season – Go Back and Get It – were chosen to allow us to acknowledge our past struggles and triumphs and learn from them. The struggles remain real – the omicron variant has changed our plans, but not our intent. We made the tough but necessary decision to cancel the musical production of Raisin, but the story still must be told. The show, and the season, will go on, but in a slightly different way. The three stories that make up “The Reality of Realty” are set in adjacent time frames to A Raisin in the Sun: Younger is a prequel; Beneatha’s Place and The Etiquette of Vigilance are sequels. The playwrights – Kelundra Smith, Kwame Kwei-Amah and Robert O’Hara – were each influenced by Lorraine Hanberry’s classic story in a different way, but all three address the tenuous hold so many Black people in America -past and present – have on their physical homes. It is said that the most valuable investment one can make is land, because no more is being made. These stories address the power that real estate has on the notion of identity and self-worth. We invite you back to Southwest Arts Center for our next production, Fannie: The Music and Life of Fannie Lou Hamer by Cheryl L. West (Jar The Floor, Before It Hits Home) from June 14 – July 10. This one-woman show embodies our vision of thriving at the intersection of artistic excellence and civic engagement by celebrating the impact Ms. Hamer had on voting in Mississippi and across the country. We hope this story will inspire Georgia’s next generation of voters to make their voices heard. Positive vibrations, Jamil Jude Chandra Stephens-Albright @mrjdjude facebook.com/chandra.stephensalbright Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company 4 2021-2022 Season
