Chuckwagon Derby

    Leaders
   Guide Book
Overview

   • Chuckwagon offers non-stop fun, games, challenges and adventure
   • Chuckwagon is Fun! The emphasis is on the fun and each Scout doing their best. It’s
about working together as a team, sportsmanship and having fun. It’s a show your
skills and pride event. Adult leaders, wagon leaders, mayors and parents need to
       understand that.
   • Aggressive behavior and arguing in front of the Scouts will not be tolerated.
   • Parents and siblings are welcome and may accompany the wagons to the towns to
observe and supervise, as we know herding Cub Scouts is like wrangling cats. Only
Cub Scouts may participate at the stations, please no coaching from the sidelines.
   • Wagons may drop their physical wagon at the first city on their route; there is no
need to bring the wagon to the opening or closing ceremonies.
   • Wagons are not required to have all ranks on a wagon, as not every pack has a
       Scout in every rank.
   • Tiger Cubs will still need to have their Adult Partner present at each city.
   • We encourage you to take photos, please don’t disrupt the event or distract the
       Scouts.
   • Unit responsibility - Each Scout and leader must have a current Part A&B Medical.
Each Scout’s medicals should go with their wagon leader.
   • There is a maximum 100 points available for each station, with 50% for teamwork
and spirit and 50% for skills. Cubs are scored on skills relative to their ranks.
Behavior, uniforms, and ability to follow directions can show spirit. Teamwork
looks at how all members of the wagon work together.

What Happens When We “Hit the Trail”?
Wagon Crews will be given a map of Camp Gustin and a score sheet. The map will tell the
wagon crew where to start. Wagons will travel in a clockwise circle, starting at their
assigned station. There will be 10-15 towns to visit. Visit as many stations as possible, and
in the order given.

Okay, so now you’re on the trail... what do you do?? The Scouts are pulling the wagon
along the trail... have them sing - LOUD!! - This shows Scout spirit!!- What do you sing?
Anything Patriotic... “She’s a Grand Old Flag”, “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “Hi, Ho the
Gangs All Here”, or anything you can think of. Change any wording to Chuckwagon
themes. REMEMBER ONLY SCOUTS MAY PUSH OR PULL THE WAGONS!! This is an
important fact to remember. As the Scouts are pushing the wagons, they should also pick
up all the trash they see!! “A Scout is Clean”. (The Mayor and the Sheriff are watching all
the wagons - all the time)

Follow the map - A Scout must be in charge of the map and the score sheet. This job can
rotate so all have the honor of leading the wagon. When you arrive at your station, there is
usually a short (or maybe not so short) wait. Take advantage and rest.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Prior to entering the station, the Scouts should agree on their
‘spokesperson’. There should be only 1 speaker in the group. The MAIN OBJECTIVE of
Chuckwagon is to see the wagon crews working together, having a good time, and
maintaining high spirit. The Scouts will approach the operator of the station and ask to
enter -they cannot enter the station without being invited in!!! Then they go and are tested
on skills and knowledge for their crew. The Operator will present them with a subject,
question, skill, or problem... the Scouts should then take a few steps away from the
operator - huddle together and discuss the situation (another BIG point maker) - then the
spokesman will speak - no one else should comment - even if the speaker gives
misinformation!! The wagon will be scored.

One score for Scout knowledge & another score for Scout spirit.

** DON’T FORGET TO HAVE YOUR ROUTE SHEET SIGNED OFF AT EACH STATION! **

One Chuckwagon team is suggested to be between 4 and 8 Cub Scouts. A wagon with more
doesn’t let everyone participate. A group of seven or eight will allow them to have a
quality experience and make the scoring easier for City Staff.

This year if you have a team that doesn’t have a wagon, they are free to participate
without a physical wagon. Wagons can either be homemade (see instructions on page 7), a
garden cart, radio flyer, or anything similar. More points will be earned for how
“authentic” your Chuckwagon is, but remember Cub Scout Motto, “Do Your Best”.

There must be at least one BSA registered Scouter, in uniform (or costume), and one other
adult with each wagon all day. You may have a uniformed Boy Scout guide in addition if
you wish.

Wagon leader will carry a packet with that wagon’s medical form.
