township, Glen Barham, near the intersection of San Marcos Blvd.
San Marcos Post Office and Rancho Santa Fe Rd. One year later the town had a blacksmith
shop, feed store, and a weekly newspaper and a school by 1885.
In 1840, Before California became a state, Los Vallecitos de
San Marcos, an 8,887.5 acre parcel of Mexican land, was granted
to Jose Alvarado by his uncle, Governor Juan Alvarado. The first Euro-American settler
to homestead land in the Twin
Oaks Valley (160 acres in 1875)
was Major Gustav French
Merriam. The trees for which the
1875 area is named were on his land.
Earliest inhabitants to the Twin Oaks Valley area
were the tribal families now known as the San Luis
San Marcos Floods Rey Luiseno Band of Mission Indians.
