THE STEEL
Like most things, when it comes to knives, what you end up with is
determined by what you start with. We create the best blades in the
business by starting with the best raw materials in the world.
Each type of steel is carefully chosen by defining characteristics that allow it to function in unique ways.
We have perfected the art of finishing blades with specific combinations of hardness, corrosion resistance,
and edge retention through our famous heat treating methods. The type of steel used for our blades is
very important to the function of each knife. Please see our steel chart below to determine which steel is
best for intended use.
This premium-powdered steel has the same edge retention as S30V but with
properties that allow it to resharpen easier. This would be appropriate for the
S35VN
adventure hunter who will be miles away from camp and intends to skin multiple
animals and resharpen in the field.
Rc 59-61
Small grain structure with a high carbon content has allowed this powdered steel
to become the industry standard by which other super steels are compared with.
With our BOS heat treat process, the Rc 59-61 steel outperforms other steels in
edge retention, ductility, and wear resistance. This steel takes a beating and holds
an edge for a long time. The properties that allow it to hold an edge also slow the
sharpening process. S30V is perfect for somebody who does not want to have to
sharpen in the field because it will not be needed. If your goal is to field dress and
skin an elk, or get through tough daily chores without having to resharpen, S30V is
your best choice.
Rc 59-61
The addition of Molybdenum to a standard 440C recipe allows this stainless steel
to have properties that show an increased level of toughness (ductility) and wear
resistance. The carbon content of 154CM is a jump over 420HC which results in
giving up a little corrosion resistance to get durability and better edge retention.
This steel is best suited for knives that will see hard use as a tool.
Rc 59-61
This martensitic stainless steel with its hardness at an Rc of 58-60 results in a
good balance between edge retention, amazing corrosion resistance, and ease of
resharpening. This steel is a good choice for every kind of knife from hunting and
everyday carry, to kitchen cutlery. This high value steel will live through years of
service and edge maintenance.
Rc 58-60
This high carbon spring steel is a good choice for applications that require impact
loads and extreme bending. Our Compadre Froe and Axe are good examples of this
type of tool. At Rc 57-58 the steel is not brittle. It will bend and flex back to original
shape while still remaining hard enough for good edge retentions. To remedy this,
all of our 5160 blades are coated to prevent rust.
