Dear National Trust Traveler,

Beyond white-sand beaches, the islands of the Caribbean hold
a bounty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, museums, and botanical
gardens that showcase some of the most diverse flora in North America.
Next February, join the National Trust in sunny Barbados aboard the
glamorous Sea Cloud. Over a week, sail to seven stunning islands, all with
their own unique character and intriguing blends of cultures, and savor
opportunities to swim in the Caribbean’s blue waters. Meet the owners
of historic properties, admiring their lush gardens and magnificent art
treasures, and rediscover often-forgotten links between the Caribbean
and 18th-century America. Uncover the rich history of the Caribbean’s
beautiful estates and gardens in the company of an expert in American
decorative arts from The Metropolitan Museum of Art

First, sail to the Grenadines to step ashore in tiny Carriacou, where
a fascinating museum houses precious artifacts from early Arawak and Carib
settlers. Dock overnight in mountainous Nevis, birthplace of Founding
Father Alexander Hamilton, where highlights include a tour of his childhood
home and a visit to an exceptional botanical garden and rainforest
conservancy. On neighboring St. Kitts, marvel at a UNESCO-listed hilltop
fortress where a decisive Revolutionary War battle took place. Experience
the Dutch charm of St. Eustatius, delve into the French colony of St.
Barthélemy, and visit the site of a 1782 conflict between the British and the
French at Îles des Saintes. On St. Lucia, meander through exotic flora in an
exquisite garden before returning to Barbados for disembarkation.

W ith her rich mahogany and gleaming brass, the legendary Sea Cloud travels under 30 billowing
sails trimmed by hand. Her original owners, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E. F.
Hutton, desired a craft like no other. They spared no expense to create the largest private sailing ship
ever built and in 1931, Sea Cloud was launched. In the ’30s and ’40s, as she sailed the world, the four-
masted beauty was host to leaders including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
and Sweden’s King Gustavus V. Now carefully restored by a team of master craftspeople, this great lady
continues to offer elegant quarters, fine dining, and impeccable service. Praised by the world’s most
discerning travelers, Sea Cloud receives consistently high rankings from Condé Nast Traveler. n
