Silent Auction Rules
1. The Silent Auction will begin promptly at 5:00 on June 8, 2019 and will close at approximately 6:20 p.m.
   and 6:30 p.m. Each closing bid will be certified by an Auction Official and constitutes the winning bid.
   Serious bidders should stand next to auction bid sheet until Auction Official picks up bid sheet. Not all
   bid sheets are picked up at the EXACT closing time.
2. All items and services have been donated to Japanese American Cultural & Community Center
   (JACCC) and are sold by JACCC and not the donor. Purchasers may not ask for refunds or exchanges
   from the donor. Auction coordinators are not responsible for lost merchandise or certificates. Lost
   merchandise or certificates will not be replaced.
3. All purchases are final. NO RETURNS OR REFUNDS.
4. All Silent Auction items and services must be used within the time limits specifically stated in the catalog
   and are subject to the terms and conditions stipulated by the donors. Please note that all
   accommodations are subject to availability. Exact dates and detailed conditions of stays in hotels must
   be arranged in advance by the purchaser with the donor, keeping in mind that all black-out periods
   stated in the catalog and on certificates will apply. All noted restrictions and expiration dates apply.
   Expiration dates cannot be extended.
5. JACCC assumes no responsibility should any of these establishments be unable to fulfill your certificate.
6. In the event of a contested item, the last two individuals appearing on the bid sheet will participate in
   a sealed “bid off.” This will be in written form. The decision of the Auction Official in this procedure will
   be final.
7. All gifts in the Silent Auction have bid sheets affixed nearby. Persons bidding must include their name,
   bid number, table number, phone number and bid amount on the sheet. Incorrect bid raises will be
   changed by the Auction Officials.
8. Winners will be notified at their tables during the evening. Items purchased must be removed the
   evening of the event. Payments must be made at the time and may be made by cash, check (made
   payable to JACCC), Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
9. Please note minimum bids and increases in bid amounts for each item. Bids will be honored only if
   incremental bidding is in accordance with the minimum increases. Bids below opening minimum bids
   will be changed to the proper increase.
10. The Auction Coordinators have endeavored to catalog and describe the Auction items correctly, but
    all items are sold “as is” and the Auction Coordinators neither warrant nor represent and in no way are
    responsible for the correctness of description, or genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition to
    represent cash value and, once given to the purchaser will not be replaced (if lost or otherwise). No
    statement contained in the Catalog or made orally at the Auction or elsewhere shall be deemed to
    such a warranty representation or assumption of liability.
11. Certificates are the same as cash and cannot be replaced by the Auction if lost or stolen. These trips
    are only suggested, should you wish to extend you stays you must coordinate with the donor directly, at
    your expense. AUCTION COORDINATORS DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS.
12. Neither JACCC nor Knock Out Productions shall be liable to winners for any failure, delay, cancellation,
    interruption or changes to any provision of services, events or travel packages purchased which is
    occasioned by causes beyond our control including, but not restricted to fires, earthquakes, floods or
    other inclement weather, war, civil commotion or disturbances, strikes, lockouts, labor disputes,
    accidents, epidemic, interruptions in or delays of transportation services, electrical or power failures or
    outages, failures or delays in obtaining delivery from donors or manufacturers, suspension or non-
    renewal of the venue’s license for any reasons whatsoever, or any act ruling, regulation or law of any
    government bureau or agency or public authority. Delays so caused shall not release winners from their
    obligations to accept and pay for the items purchased.
13. Items/certificates purchased at this auction cannot be sold on any internet auction or at any other
    event. Certificates will be considered void if these items are sold on any internet site.

Bidders will have the opportunity to write their bid number and
  the pre-assigned bid amount in the BUY it NOW box on the
                          bid sheet.
                           If you BUY it NOW, you will be the instant winner!
                        If no one BUYS it NOW, this is a regular auction item.

Like the samurai in many of his paintings on fabric, Hisashi Otsuka is an artist
of remarkable dedication. Schooled in Zen and the martial arts, he has lived
and worked by the warrior’s code of discipline and duty. Rooted in Japanese
tradition yet adventurous in nature, he is known throughout the world for his
boldness of color and style that mark him as truly unique.

Otsuka’s work today is a powerful balance of ancient Eastern techniques and
modern Western ideas. Like a concert musician with perfect pitch, he has
perfect color memory and sense. His time-honored poets and warriors,
kabuki figures, ukiyo-e women, and elegant calligraphy are steeped in the
classical past. Yet in color and composition, his work achieves a vigorous,
contemporary context. Monumental in scope and meticulous in detail, it

Otsuka came to the West – to Hawaii – in 1979. Until that time his painting
had been historical in subject and theme. But now it has emerged from the

– Otsuka’s compositions have evolved to a decorative elegance. Otsuka’s art has achieved an important
transition: a cross-cultural excellence that not only appeals to East and West artistically, but also brings them
together in understanding. This, after all, is Otsuka’s personal mission, and he pursues it with splendid
dedication. In New York, London, Paris, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Hawaii, Otsuka’s one-man shows have
earned the highest praise. His international prominence increases year by year, making him a truly dominant
force on the world art scene. To Otsuka, life and art create each other. He, the master, the warrior, devotes
himself to the fabric of both, wielding his brush like a sword.

9 Walnut End Table by George Nakashima Woodworkers
George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905 and grew up in the forests of the Olympic
Peninsula. He received a Bachelor's Degree in architecture at the University of Washington and a Master's
from MIT in 1930, as well as the Prix Fontainebleau from L'Ecole Americaine des Beaux Arts in France in 1928.
After spending some time in Paris, he traveled around the world and secured a job at the Antonin Raymond
office in Tokyo which sent him to Pondicherry, India, where he was the onsite architect for the first reinforced
concrete building in that country and became one of the first disciples of Sri Aurobindo.
