2 26 – 28 August How far must we travel to come home? Prince Pericles has everything but understands little. When a reckless act threatens his safety, he must flee his home and take to sea. Reliant on the whims of the fates and the kindness of strangers, Pericles is driven from shore to shore. Only by reaching the ends of the earth may he finally understand what it means to come home. We’re working with the National Theatre on an exciting new initiative, Public Acts - a nationwide programme to celebrate community and create extraordinary theatre.
The Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch is the first theatre partner for Public Acts which will see a two year partnership between Queen’s Theatre, the National Theatre and a number of community organisations across Greater London. The first of these productions is Pericles featuring a small cast of professional actors together with a large community ensemble. They breathe new life into this classic tale in a musical version on the National Theatre’s Olivier stage. Pericles will be performed in the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PX. The National Theatre is on the South Bank, just minutes from Covent Garden, the West End and Waterloo.
The main entrance is on the riverside. Public Acts is inspired by Public Works, the Public Theater’s ground-breaking programme in New York. Supported by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Hertz, The Sackler Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation. by William Shakespeare in a version by Chris Bush, with music by James Fortune

5 A hilarious masterpiece of situation comedy. Beverly and husband Laurence are entertaining their newlywed neighbours. Joining them is twitchy divorcee Sue, banished from the party of her teenage daughter. Over a stack of cheesy- pineapple sticks, small talk and splashes of alcohol, the appalling host’s soiree soon descends into chaos. As the sniping begins, this delicious comedy cracks open social climbing suburbia to savagely funny effect. Set in seventies Romford, with Donna Summer top of the hit parade and adults behaving disgracefully, join us for a great night out at the drinks party from hell!

9 ‘The National Theatre’s play of the year’ (Evening Standard, 2017) comes to Hornchurch this Autumn. In the run-up to Christmas, three families are placed into cramped temporary accommodation.
A middle-aged man and his elderly mum, a young family with a baby on the way, a newly arrived woman from Sudan. Strangers. Forced together. No space is personal. In an intimate story of family love for our times, writer and director Alexander Zeldin (Beyond Caring) continues his unique approach to theatre with this engaging new play. This heart-breaking production shines the spotlight on ‘the dehumanising reality of being homeless’ (Financial Times). Due to the immersive nature of this production, seats in rows D, E, F and G may not be directly next to each other as shown on the seating plan on our website.

A chilling and deeply felt ghost story. Julia was a musical prodigy – nicknamed ‘Little Miss Mozart’ in the tabloids. She was composing symphonies aged eight. By nineteen the world was at her feet… until her dead body was found mysteriously in a dingy attic. Twelve years on and her father Joe has never come to terms with this. Was it really suicide? Or was someone else with Julia the night she died? Joe wants answers and tonight he will get them… This hauntingly tense study of grief and the supernatural is punctuated with trademark wit from Alan Ayckbourn, one of the world’s most popular and prolific playwrights.
