Jeanette is organising a 1 day "hands on" course somewhere in the lower mountains, probably
in July. There will be a prerequisite online theory refresher and test. The club is prepared to
subsidise cost for active members and leaders to a maximum (for you) of $80. Watch the
program for more details and registration.

As illustrated by our cover photo, there have been plenty of water-based activities recently in
this summer’s extraordinary heat. Here’s another report –

KAYAK TRIP 28th December 2018
As any leader knows, car swaps are tense at the best of times, so why would anyone design a
walk that requires people swaps? The benefits are many - you get to see two lots of scenery,
you can share kayaks, people without kayaks can come, you can all meet at lunch-time, but
just try and organise one!

Anyway, due to the generosity of the kayak owners and some expert advice from Gordon we
finally managed to get a quorum for this event - and an even number of people, as well as
                                                               people who were happy to

for power craft. The kayaking becomes much more peaceful. This is a beautiful part of Port
Hacking, with sandstone rock outcrops, mangroves and riparian forest. We stopped on a sandy
beach for morning tea, and watched the tide come up (very quickly).

Meanwhile the walkers drove up the hill (for a head start, because walking is slower than
paddling), and started on the track to Winifred Falls. The plan was to meet at the end of the
track for lunch. Robyn W led the walkers, having only done a very quick reckie on the start of
the track the day before.
The kayakers won and spent a few tense moments wondering where the other group was (at
least I did). However, due to some expert planning, they turned up about 15 minutes later,
complaining of the heat and a scrubby track (obviously they haven't done much walking in
RNP). Unfortunately, the wind had picked up a bit and the group 2 kayakers faced a much
tougher trip back.

We decided that the kayak
trip has much better scenery
than the walk. The track,
while well marked, passes
through a lot of dense heath
with only a couple of spots
where you can enjoy the
view. I tried to encourage
some off track exploration of
some very interesting rocks
poking through the heath but
there was a general mutiny.
Both return trips went without
incident, and we arrived at
Fishermans Bay in time to
see the last kayaks being
dragged up to the cars.

A great trip - but probably better done in spring, when the walkers would enjoy some
spectacular wildflowers. There is also the possibility of driving to another track-head. More to
explore!

A few things I learnt:
1. high tide in South West arm is at least an hour later than it says it will be,
2. if you have an uneven number of people, someone has to return the same way (obvious?
not to me!),
3. you need exactly half the number of kayaks than people (that was a light bulb moment),
4. the wind will pick up after lunch, and ..
5. this means that all the strong paddlers have to be in the other group,
6. you can't plan something like this unless everyone books in at least a week in advance!
7. Port Hacking is very busy on 28th December, and
8. everyone in Sutherland Shire must own some sort of water craft!

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Springwood Bushwalking Club Inc. (SBC) is a non-profit, volunteer association. It is
affiliated with Bushwalking NSW (formerly the Confederation of NSW Bushwalking Clubs),
and through this organisation with Bushwalking Australia. The SBC organises a year-
round program of activities including bushwalking, cycling, camping, abseiling,
canyoning, rogaining, and paddling.
This Newsletter includes the club program for the coming months. In addition, Short Notice
activities may be listed on our website, and advised to members by email. The Sunday night
email bulletin also includes all activities that are not full or nearly full, according to the number of
registered participants. If you would like an item to be included in the bulletin please contact the
webmaster before 7pm on Sunday at bmaudio@exemail.com.au.
Group sizes are subject to limitations set by the activity Leader, in accordance with Club and
NPWS guidelines. All activities are graded according to degree of difficulty. Grading details are
listed on our website.

Library
Lists of books and maps held by our librarian are now available on the club’s website (under
LIBRARY and MAPS accessed from the HOME page), from where they may also be requested.
Please give the librarian a good week’s notice to bring your order to the next meeting.

Equipment
The club now has a reasonable set of camping and bushwalking equipment to lend to
members, listed on our website HOME page under BUSHWALKING and CLUB EQUIPMENT.
Use the booking form in the member area to reserve an item, or see if it's available.

What is Bushwalking NSW up to?
This is the year we are focusing on Young People in Clubs. We're calling it the YPIC project
and it's going to be epic :-) So reach out to us if you'd like to get involved.

We already have a list of clubs interested in engaging with the Outdoor Education Group guides
and students. In May, the Office of Sport will kindly provide us with tips on how to include youth
and young children on our walks and adventures. And throughout the year we will be sharing
success stories and ideas for engaging young people. Feel free to share your own!

Canyoning
Do you love canyoning? We do too! And we are currently organising a group of experienced club
members to write canyoning content for the Recreational Bushwalkers' Manual. The manual
will provide guidelines and information for safe, enjoyable community-based volunteer bushwalking
in Australia. The manual will be an updated version of the really useful Bushwalking and Ski Touring
Leadership Handbook. If you'd like to assist with this project, please contact Bushwalking NSW.

ATTENTION CANYONERS

“T2”, who claims some of you would know, has sent the following offer to members of SBC:
I've recently set up a small online store specifically for canyoning
equipment: canyongear.com.au. One of my goals is to support the work of outdoor clubs. As
such, I'd like to offer two things to the Springwood Bushwalkers committee and members:
1) I'd like to offer a 10 per cent discount on all full priced items to all Springwood Bushwalkers
members. Let me know if that is of interest and I can create a discount code that can be entered
at checkout.
2) I'm keen to help outdoor clubs get their hands on canyoning equipment at the best possible
price. Let me know when you are next looking to buy club items (harnesses, descenders, ropes,
etc) and I am certain I will be able to get them for you at a better price. It doesn't matter whether
they are items stocked on the website, as I am building up relationships with a range of
distributors and manufacturers that allow me to get pretty much any canyoning gear.
