Citizens want to participate in getting more
               human “intelligent cities”
• While politicians and great companies associate smart city to digital city,
citizens do it to a friendly and accesible city.
• That´s the conclusión after interviewing 20 experts, and polling almost 500
members of the Empresa y Sociedad Opinion Forum and the Post 55
  (www.post55.es) Social Network.
• The polled people claim for a more active participation in an area normally
kept for large companies and political responsible.
• It´s a matter of evolving from a public-private collaboration, to a public-
  private one brought by citizenship.
• Design for future citizens, needs to take special account of the elderly and
  handicapped people.

Madrid, 10 June 2013
CEAPAT-IMSERSO (www.ceapat.es) and Fundación Empresa y Sociedad
(www.empresaysociedad.org) have presented today the report “Intelligent,
accesible and friendly environments”. It summarizes the work carried out after
interviewing 20 experts, and nearly 500 members of the Empresa y Sociedad
Opinión Forum and Post55 social network (www.post55.es).

While experts identify the “intelligent environment” concept (city, urban space,
building and home) with the “digital city” one; citizens think of accesible areas,
environmentally friendly, with an integrated transport system and a reduction in
energy consumption . In other words, with a more friendly, sustainable and human
environment .

According to the report, the evolution of cities will be based on technological
changes, which are faster and deeper than physical ones. New business models
whose challenge will be to avoid social exclusion due to technical or economical
reasons, will appear.

Future environments´design, should take into account citizens´opinion, specially
from the elderly and the handicapped who aren´t yet integrated in the current
public-private teams. The boost to citizens participation needs to clarify the
intelligent space concept and to do a basic pedagogy so that users`opinion is taken
into account from the start and their active participation even promoted.

According to Francisco Abad, founder of Fundación Empresa y Sociedad “the people
we´ve asked, claim for more protagonism in ideas-generation and decisions-taking
as now the players are almost exclusively big companies and political responsibles.
There are already forums where people can collaborate. from the formally existing
ones to facilitate public participation to the associations for the aged, the
handicapped , or the citizens´laboratories, the latter ones are frequent in various
large city councils”. These groups are usually part of the working teams in

                                              1
initiatives related to friendly cities for the elderly, or with accessibility and
mobility-related iniciatives, but not so much to those related to the “smartcities”
initiatives“

The report has been presented in easy to access, under creativecommons licence
PDF format, to facilitate its spread.
