ADDISON SHRUM
My name is Addison Shrum and I am an Iowa 4-H AmeriCorps service
member through ISU Extension-Polk County. My area of focus is with Genesis Inc.
where I help mentor, teach, and coach soccer for kids all around Des Moines. I grew
up in Altoona, Iowa and I am currently a third-year student at Central College. I will
earn a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in mathematics.
Iowa has other towns that are interested in starting a 4-H soccer club and my
role is to partner with Genesis Inc. to develop a curriculum/4-H soccer program plan
that we believe will be effective for other communities to use in the future years.
This is one of the steps we are taking in 4-H to reach out to a wider, more diverse, audience to make an impact in
the lives of more kids through the world’s sport. I am also working to recruit and engage new 4-H volunteers who
have an interest in soccer.
Genesis Inc. and 4-H are creating a program where the youth join because of their passion for soccer, and
while they are enrolled in the program we offer them educational opportunities. Already this year the youth have
learned about different career fields from the professionals that work in them and they experienced the history and
importance of African-American culture in Iowa at the I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa event in Des Moines.
Soccer practice for the kids takes two hours. One hour is spent tutoring or engaging in educational
workshops to teach leadership, healthy living, and communication. While the second hour is designated for actual
soccer practice in a gymnasium or on a field.
From March 12 through March 15 the players participated in the Genesis Spring Break Soccer Camp. This
was an opportunity for the youth to stay active during the break. The players also were learning through different
communication and team-building workshops. The younger ages were given an overview of the rules for the game
of soccer, because this is the first time many of them have participated in an organized sport.
We are introducing the first Genesis Inc. team into the Iowa Soccer
League this Spring season. Genesis has many kids nine or ten years old,
therefore we have been able to register these kids into the Iowa Soccer
League where they will compete against other soccer clubs around Iowa. The
Iowa 4-H goal is to host a soccer tournament with other 4-H soccer clubs in
summer 2019 with the assistance of Genesis Inc.

“FROM THE FARM TO YOU” CALENDAR
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encouraged students from Iowa to submit artwork to be considered for inclu-
sion in the “From the Farm to You” calendar. The calendars are distributed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and
Land Stewardship at the Iowa State Fair and include artwork that emphasizes the connection between the production
of Iowa’s farmers and the products used by people every day.
“These calendars do a great job of showcasing Iowa agriculture to the visitors at our booths during the Iowa State Fair.
The creativity and artistic ability of these students help educate fairgoers about where their food comes from,” Naig
said.
Students of all ages are invited to submit artwork. Pictures should be drawn using only black lines on plain white pa-
per, 8 ½ by 11 inches. The pictures should not be colored. They can be submitted to the Iowa Department of Agricul-
ture and Land Stewardship, Calendar Kids, 502 E. 9 St., Des Moines, IA 50319.
                                                    th

Drawings must be received by May 1, 2018 to be considered.
Students whose artwork is selected to be in the calendar will be recognized during the Iowa State Fair. An electronic
version of the current calendar can be seen at http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/press/pdfs/2017/
