The Dirt on Composting
Compostingisanaturalprocessinwhichorganic
materialsdecompose,andbecomeanutrient-richsoil
amendment.Yourlawnandgardenwillloveit!

WhyCompost:
 • ReduceGreenhouseGases.DivertingOrganicsfromthe
   landfillreducesmethaneemissions.
 • StopSoilLoss.TheEarthannuallyloses75-100GigaTonnesof
   arabletopsoil.Compostingreturnsnutrientsbackintosoils.
 • SaveWater.Organicmatterretains18-20timesitsweightin
   water.1%organicmatterinthetop6''ofsoilcanhold27,000
   gallonsofwaterperacre.

CompostTips:
  • BuildDiversity.Onespoonofhealthygardensoilhasbillions
    ofbacteria,severalyardsoffungalflaments,thousandsof
    protozoa,andlotsofnematodes.Feedthesoilandtheplants
    willgrow.
  • WaystoUseCompost;soilamendment(turnedintothesoil),
    topdressingormulch(ontoptobeabsorbedovertime),and
    oneinch(or2cm)offinishedcompostcankickstartagarden.
  • RemembertheRatios.Finishedcomposthasacarbonto
    nitrogenratios12:1-20:1.Therightmixofbrowns(carbon)and
    greens(nitrogen)willensureasmoothcompostingprocess.*

Recycling Matters
Fordecades,Canadaandotherdevelopedcountrieshadbeen
sellingtheirwasteplastictoChina,whereitwassorted,cleaned,
processedandre-usedinthecountry'smassivemanufacturing
industry.ThatallchangedonJan.1,2018,whenChinabegan
refusingshipmentsofawidevarietyofplasticwasteproducts,
includingplasticcontaminatedbyforeignmaterialssuchasfoodor
fabric.Thisleftmanycountriesinabind,includingCanada,where
wastedisposalishandledonamunicipalandregionallevel.The
CanadianPlasticsIndustryAssociationsaysithasmostofthemeans
requiredtohandleCanada'splasticwastewithinthecountry,butit
willtakeyearstobuildupthescaletohandleallofit.
Intheend,thegoalistoreachazerowasteplasticeconomy.The
problemwithachievingazero-wasteeconomy,inanutshell,is
peanutbutter.Plasticcontainersthatarecollectedwithfoodstill
inside-peanutbutterbeingthemostcommonexample-more

Whatisinallthattrash?Plasticstakeup7%ofthevolumeand
30%oftheweightofthetotalgarbageflow.Rightnowaround
80%ofmunicipalwasteinCanadaendsupbeingdumpedina

Here’swhyrecyclingremainsimportant:
  • Eightmilliontonnesofplasticwastearebeingdumpedintothe
    world'soceanseachyear,oronedump-truckloadofstuffevery
