(Image credit: TD Ameritrade) TD Ameritrade has announced the launch of Thinkorswim Web, making it easier than ever before to get access to this powerful trading platform. The new browser interface includes most of the essential features of the Thinkorswim desktop client, including demo accounts, live trading, and customizable technical
charts. The release came in part due to the spike in trading caused by the coronavirus pandemic, as stock trading activity in the US increased markedly when stimulus checks were issued. TD Ameritrade also noted that the web interface would make it easier for traders to access Thinkorswim in households where more family members are now sharing
desktops for school and remote work.TD Ameritrade originally purchased Thinkorswim in 2009 in a $606 million deal. According to Steve Quirk, executive vice president of Trading and Education at TD Ameritrade, the addition of Thinkorswim Web “completes” the Thinkorswim experience for retail traders. It also helps this broker compete against
increasingly popular mobile-first brokerages like Robinhood and Webull. The new Thinkorswim Web app can be accessed from any browser and is designed to be responsive to mobile devices. It works for both live and paper trading accounts. It also covers all of the same markets as the ThinkorSwim desktop app, including stock, options, futures, and
forex trading. The only major feature missing in the browser interface is thinkScript, the internal programming language used to develop custom indicators and trading strategies within Thinkorswim.Check out our guide to the best forex trading apps Platform trading is the technical term for trading investments using online software prepared by a
private company or available to all Internet users through an open source license. The user logs onto a web interface and makes financial transactions using the trading platform. Foreign exchange, or forex, is one type of trading performed using trading platform software. The investor makes trades between currencies of different countries for the
purpose of making a short-term financial gain. In the United States, investors can also go online to trade stocks in the domestic market, including shares in companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Providers like Scottrade and TD AmeriTrade provide individuals and groups with accounts, in accord with federal regulations. The
online trading platform, whether it is for stocks, bonds, futures, or currency, is available in two main types of online software: a manual trading application in which the user makes trades by one transaction or a group of transactions each time; and an automated trading application in which trades are made according to preferences specified in
advance by the user. Investors use real-time information to make trading decisions. When a trading platform is interfaced with the latest market updates, investors rely on an automated trading system (or robot) for making gains. Some platforms even provide protection against reversals -- for example, an alert that one company's stock is projected to
jump in value on the NYSE at noon could trigger the robot to buy shares for the investor. Platform trading also involves using the online platform provider and other sources for advice on strategies for making a profit in the trading environment. For example, the investor can use strategies used by other traders on the same platform or develop his or
her own strategy -- although trading websites publish a disclaimer that strategies discussed on the site are not to be interpreted by consumers as trading advice or promises of future returns. ThinkorSwim (ToS) is an advanced trading platform offered by TD Ameritrade. It is often regarded by active traders as one of the best trading platform
available. It’s jammed-packed with technical analysis and charting tools and software features that can improve a trader's efficiency.ThinkorSwim is so highly respected in the trading community that many people open a TD Ameritrade account just to have access to ToS. In this article, we’ll look at what everyone is raving about by going through a
high-level overview of ThinkorSwim. All-in-one platform for trading virtually any instrumentIncludes many elite charting and analysis toolsBeginners may feel overwhelmed by its numerous features $0 for Stocks, ETFs, and OptionsWeb, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android ThinkorSwim, also called ToS, is the trading platform for TD Ameritrade, a U.S. based
brokerage. The ToS software was first created by Tom Sosnoff and Scott Sheridan in 1999. The platform quickly gained notoriety and was acquired by TD Ameritrade in 2009. ToS is an advanced trading platform that allows you to trade just about any instrument. This includes stocks, options, ETFs, bonds, futures, and futures options. Besides trading,
the platform lets you perform complex analysis on stocks and potential trades.ToS is available for Windows, Macs, and the web. There is also a mobile ToS app available. The web version mimics the desktop’s visual layout but doesn’t have quite as many features.ToS lets you log into a live or paper trading account. In the above screenshot, we are in
the paper trading account. This account allows you to trade with fake money. You can use it for practicing strategies and for understanding how certain trades work. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the ToS software, open it and log in. In the above screenshot, we’ve marked off three sections for reference. We have the left side panel open. If it
is closed, look midway down the app's left edge for a small handle icon. Click it to open the panel. Reference Area 1: This is where you'll find your account information. It contains your buying power and cash information. Reference Area 2: This area contains gadgets such as watchlists, news, quotes, and mini charts. You can add and remove gadgets
by clicking the little hamburger icon (i.e., three horizontal lines) in the top right of each gadget. Reference Area 3: This is the main work area. It contains charts, analysis and it is also where you place trades. The charts appear because we have the charts tab highlighted. In the center of each chart is a little box. Those are there because flex grid
editing is turned on. This little box lets you add and remove charts on the flex grid. To access it, click the nine dots icon in the upper right of the app and select "customize grid." To start trading, click the “Trade” tab at the top in RA3. Type any symbol into the symbol box. In the screenshot below, we typed in MSFT (Microsoft's stock symbol). To trade
MSFT, you can right click anywhere in the “Underlying” section that has quotes or single click the Ask or Bid price. That will bring up the trade panel at the bottom. Make any changes to the price if using a limit order. You can also change the order type from limit to market or other types under the Order column. Then click the confirm and send
button. Trading options in ToS uses the same mechanics as trading stocks. You can see the January monthly options chain for MSFT in the above screenshot. By right clicking any strike on the call (left) or put (right) side (or single clicking the ask/bid price), you can select to buy or sell the option. It will populate the same trade tab. There are no fees
for using the ToS platform. You just need a TD Ameritrade account. ToS charges the same trading commissions charged by TD Ameritrade. There are no commissions on stocks, ETFs, and no base option fee.TD Ameritrade eliminated those commissions in October 2009. Like most brokers, ToS still charges per-contract fees for options ($0.65) and
futures ($2.25). You can see the full commission schedule here. Yes - cash deposits with TD Ameritrade are FDIC-insured while brokerage funds are SIPC-insured up to $500,000. TD Ameritrade has also purchased a supplement insurance plan from London insurers that provides an additional $149.5 million worth of protection for securities and $2
million for cash. Certainly! Some platforms charge a fee or can be more complex. ThinkorSwim is free for anyone that has a ToS account. If you mostly trade stocks and ETFs and want exceptional analysis, ToS is definitely worth checking out. If you're wanting to compare ToS with other top trading platforms, E*TRADE, and Interactive Brokers are
both worth a look. And if you frequently trade options, you may want to consider Robinhood as it's one of the few platforms that doesn't charge a contract fee for options trades.TaxableRetirementEducationSpecialtyManaged Portfolios$0 for stocks, ETFs, and optionsOptions: $0.65Futures: $2.25Web, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android24/5 (Sunday, 8 PM

page For an options trader, information is constantly in play. Quantcha provides a suite of tools to aid traders with searching, filtering and analyzing options. The company recently launched Quantcha Unlimited to help options traders profit by eliminating commission fees. Benzinga spoke with Quantcha CEO and founder Ed Kaim about the company
and its increasing leverage in the space. The Company Founded in 2014, Quantcha has constructed a set of unique tools that enable interesting opportunities for options investors. “We have evolved from trade optimization and analysis to a holistic options management platform,” Kaim said. “We enabled any options investor to implement complex
strategies that just weren’t feasible a few years ago.” Options traders generally still use "Greeks" to evaluate holdings for any given option class. But now, services like Quantcha have the capability to do much more extensive and innovative modeling. While the tools opened up sophisticated scenarios that were previously only accessible major players,
there was still one significant roadblock for traders. “Options trading can get very expensive very quickly,” said Kaim. “Our customers loved what our tools enabled, but found that the commissions were eating into their potential profits, and that was a major barrier to adoption.” The Solution Transaction costs weren’t something the company could
solve with technology, so Quantcha turned to innovating through business development. “We were able to work out an incredible deal for customers,” said Kaim. “Anyone can sign up and get our complete platform, plus unlimited commission-free trading of stocks and options, for just $99 per month. That only covers 3 or 4 typical trades elsewhere.”
The company claims that their new commission-free trading offer was the missing piece in their options offering. Quantcha's tools include an option search engine, an option trade analyzer, stock and option trade screeners, stock and option charting and an option portfolio and book manager, according to the company. Quantcha offers a free
evaluation; a personal account for $49 per month; and an unlimited account for $99 per month. “There have been so many strategies and so many approaches that users have had to forego because of insufficient technology and high commission costs. We’re the first to solve both of those problems, and now we’re enjoying a huge first-mover
advantage," Kaim said. Our best options brokers have a wealth of tools that help you measure and manage risk as you determine which trades to place. They also include valuable education that helps you grow in sophistication as an options trader. tastyworks:
Best Options Trading Platform, Best Broker for Advanced Options Traders, and Best Broker for Mobile Options Traders E*TRADE: Best Broker for Beginning Options Traders eOption: Best Broker for Low-Cost Options Trading Tastyworks says that more than 90% of the trades placed by its customers are derivatives, so they naturally spend their time
designing a lot of tools specifically for options and futures traders. Everything is designed to help traders evaluate volatility and the probability of profit. Tastyworks’ entire platform is geared towards making decisions and taking action. Tastyworks opened its virtual doors in 2017, so it isn’t saddled with legacy systems that bog down many of the
older online brokers. This has helped it tremendously in keeping the options trading experience to the essentials. Tastyworks’ executions are fast and the costs are low, with commissions capped for opening orders for options on equities and futures at $10 per leg. Watchlists are a key component of the tastyworks platform, and they are the same on
mobile, web, and download. The look and feel of the mobile platform is very similar to the desktop versions, though you’ll find price wheels and ways to define trades that minimize the possibility of making a mistake. As you build a position from a chart or from a volatility screener, a trade ticket is built for you. There’s also a video viewer embedded so
you can keep an eye on the tastytrade network. Though a newcomer to options trading might be initially uncomfortable, those who understand the basic concepts will appreciate the content, features, and focus apparent throughout tastyworks’ platforms. Pros All of the tools you’ll need for analyzing and trading derivatives are built into the platforms.
The charting capabilities are uniquely tuned for the options trader. If you have multiple positions on a particular underlying, you can analyze the risk profiles of the combined position. There are hours of original video from tastytrade every weekday, offering up-to-the-minute trading ideas, plus a huge library of pre-recorded videos and shows. Cons
Newcomers to trading and investing may be overwhelmed by tastyworks at first. There is no fixed income trading (outside of ETFs that contain bonds) for those who want to allocate some of their assets to a more conservative asset class. Any additional portfolio analysis beyond profit and loss requires setting up a login on a separate site, The Quiet
Foundation, which is also part of the tastytrade empire. New options traders need some help in understanding how trading derivatives can help improve portfolio returns. E*TRADE’s more advanced platforms are elegantly designed and guide you along the way. When you graduate to options and derivatives, the Power E*TRADE website and mobile
app can help you learn. The Power E*TRADE site and app can be set up to put the functions you use most often front and center so you don’t have to dig around for them. The platform has all the features inherited from E*TRADE’s acquisition of OptionsHouse technology, which includes a wealth of helpful educational resources for the developing
options trader. Watchlists are integrated across E*TRADE’s platforms, and the full range of tradable assets is accessible on the mobile apps. The workflow is very smooth on the mobile apps. We also found that using Power E*TRADE on a tablet is quite pleasant. Pros Mobile apps are extremely well laid-out and easy to use and are among the most
comprehensive and extensive apps tested. Spectral Analysis on Power E*TRADE is a visually stunning tool that helps you visualize maximum profit and loss for an options strategy and understand your risk metrics You can test strategies using the paper trading capabilities of E*TRADE Pro’s desktop platform, which uses delayed data so you won’t
think you’re placing real trades. On all platforms, you’ll find a ubiquitous trade ticket with streaming real-time data. Cons Tiered commission schedule for options trades, charging $0.65 per contract for less frequent traders and $0.50 for those who place more than 30 options trades per quarter. Investors who would like direct access to international
markets or to trade foreign currencies should look elsewhere. You cannot consolidate your externally-held accounts to form a complete picture of your net worth on E*TRADE. eOption charges $1.99 per leg for options trades, but the per-contract fee is significantly lower than its competitors, making it great for heavy options traders. eOption also
offers commission-free stock and ETF trading so those who are options-oriented traders but also want access to other assets at a low cost will have no issues here. Clearing and exchange fees, typically a fraction of a penny per share, are spelled out on the order confirmation screen and are passed through to customers. eOption also scored highly for
its relatively low margin rates. Pros eOption offers great value for frequent options traders. The browser-based eOption Trader platform is easy to use. Newsletter subscribers can auto-trade their alerts. Cons Limited education offerings. News feeds are limited. Any OTCBB (penny stock) trades must be made with a live broker. The commission
structure for options trades tends to be more complicated than its equivalent for stock trades. Until the commission cuts that swept the industry in the fall of 2019, most brokers charged a fee for each leg of an options spread plus a commission per contract being traded. The per-leg fees, which made 2- and 4-legged spreads expensive, have been
eliminated industry-wide, for the most part. We are also seeing some brokers place caps on commissions charged for certain trading scenarios. Investors with fairly large portfolios can also take advantage of portfolio margining at some brokers. This is a practice that assesses the total risk inherent in a portfolio that contains stocks and derivatives.
Investors with large portfolios can use portfolio margining to reduce the size of the margin loan. The first and most important piece of information to consider before selecting an options trading account is what kind of trader you are. What is your trading style and risk appetite? Which tools would you like to have handy? Options are complex products
to understand and trade. All of the brokers listed above allow customers to build complex options positions as a single order. Some brokers, such as Vanguard, only allow one position per order, leaving it to the individual trader to place multiple orders one at a time to create a combination position. Merrill Edge lets you place two-legged spreads, but
anything more complex will require an additional order. If you're just getting started with options trading, the quality of education and help offered by your broker is important. Frequent traders and those who trade a large number of contracts will be more sensitive to commissions and fees, so check out your prospective broker's charges and make
sure you understand them. Investopedia is dedicated to providing investors with unbiased, comprehensive reviews and ratings of online brokers. Our reviews are the result of months of evaluating all aspects of an online broker’s platform, including the user experience, the quality of trade executions, the products available on its platforms, costs and
