The “Dans”
Brian Burgett
On January 1, 2018, Dan Compston and
Dan Walker each passed the torch of their
respective company’s presidency to the next
                      generation of leaders.

These two are very unique individuals and
                       represent a 40 year chapter in Kokosing’s
history. Dan Walker started with the company in
1976 and Dan Compston in 1977. They each became Vice President
of their respective business units in 1983. In 2015, Dan Compston
became the President of Kokosing Construction Company, Inc. and
Dan Walker became the President of Kokosing Industrial, Inc. They
have overseen the phenomenal growth of the business units from a
volume of $57 million a year in 1983 to $800 million per year today.

Through the years, they have hired many experienced team members
who have brought knowledge that has allowed Kokosing to grow
and tackle new challenges. At the same time, they each have hired,
developed, and ultimately influenced the growth of countless “green”
team members. Each of them ran their companies in their own style
of leadership but they share qualities that were key to their success.
Some of these shared qualities include their strong ethical and moral
approach to business, extensive construction experience, strong
analytical skills, their competitive spirit, a passion for continuous
improvement, and caring about their team members.

The “Dans” have been a strong sounding board, along with Marsha,
Barth, and myself. No one in this group has ever been timid about
expressing their opinion on matters and quite often you might wish you
weren’t in the room when a particularly strong expression of opinion
was going on.

Over 40 years, this group has faced many difficult challenges together.
Each time we have closed ranks and with unwavering support, we
have acted as one for the betterment of the Kokosing family. I can
think of no other team members I would have wanted beside me
during those tough times.

I have always believed that God brings people across our path for
a reason, but it is up to us to figure out what that reason is. I am
convinced Dan Compston and Dan Walker crossed the Kokosing path
to help build a special company, where 3,500 special team members
could be proud to work. From the Kokosing family, thank you Dan and
Dan!!

my career was about the people. To be successful in our

the opportunity to face challenges every day. I love working

Looking back on his career, Dan shares these thoughts:
To me, the construction people are great. Kokosing has
become a HOME. What is a home? A home is where you
have the support of the owners (Bill, Brian, Marsha, and
Barth), who agree with your need to be ethical, honest,
and fair. You have the opportunity to help grow a company,
while furthering your own career. You get the satisfaction
of constructing complex and challenging projects. You
get to work alongside highly talented co-workers, who are
dedicated to overcome the daily challenges, and where
you are able to make good friends for life.

Dan lives in Lewis Center, Ohio. He has two children, Colleen

January 23, 2017 in Las Vegas.

                        Sheldon started with Kokosing in
April 2006 as a Concrete Pump
Operator. Over the last eleven years,
he has pumped a little over 1,000,000
cubic yards of concrete. More amazing is that Sheldon has
worked 10,000 hours accident free and with no damage to the
equipment. He is a mentor and a leader on the jobsite.

When it comes to concrete, Sheldon knows the product and
what the pump is capable of pumping. He is confident and
committed to safety on all the projects where he is working.
We are grateful to have Sheldon as a valuable team member
of Kokosing.

We are excited to welcome Corman Kokosing Construction Company to
the Kokosing family of companies. The Burgett family had the desire to
expand geographically by partnering with a well-respected, self-performing
general construction company. Corman mirrors our organization’s values
through their exceptional commitment to their team members, safety and
quality while also aligning with the type of work Kokosing performs in
highway, marine, and water/wastewater markets.

Corman was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1920 as a family-owned
asphalt and concrete paving company. As the need for larger and more 2
complex infrastructure grew, so did Corman. They are now one of the
largest heavy civil construction companies in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The marine division was founded in 1921 and got its start in Baltimore,
Maryland. They continue to be a leader and innovator in the heavy marine
construction field, always working to develop a faster way to meet and
exceed expectations. They also boast an extensive equipment fleet.

The two companies have combined to become Corman Kokosing
Construction Company. As one company, it will serve heavy civil,
transportation, and marine sectors throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

We know they are a great fit for the Kokosing team, including one of the
                                                                               3
aforementioned reasons, of being family owned. Chase Cox is a fourth

president.

                      “Kokosing
We are excited to join the
                                family and for the
opportunities this brings to both our
                team members and our customers.”
~ Chase Cox, Corman Kokosing President

Also like Kokosing, Corman’s 450 team members have been key in
developing the company to what it is today. It is clear they are a dedicated
and committed group; over 60% of their workforce has been with the
company for over ten years and 23% have been with the company over 4
twenty years. Together, we agree our team members are our most valuable
resource.

In addition to the headquarters in Annapolis Junction, Maryland, Corman
operates regionally, with offices in Richmond, VA, Chesapeake, VA, and a
marine dock facility in Baltimore, MD. We look forward to getting to know
the team members at Corman Kokosing Construction.

Why are Education and Training Important?
Mark Osborn, Corporate Field Workforce Manager
Construction is ever-changing. Safety expectations, quality
                                                                        1 2
requirements, and productivity enhancements being used
today are well beyond what they were just a few years ago.
For Kokosing team members, the need to continue their
education and training is critical. It allows them to develop as
individuals while simultaneously helping Kokosing evolve and
grow as a company. It makes us all better. Below are some
thoughts by Kokosing team members recently involved in
education and training.

“Training makes me personally more marketable to Kokosing.
It provides me experience in some ways, but also refreshes
me with items I have been exposed to in the field. I want to
complete training to better position myself for Journeyman
status.”
Jeffrey Lawhorn, 3rd Year Laborer Apprentice

“Continuing education allows me to prepare for other 3 4
opportunities within Kokosing.”
Kyle Daniels, 3rd Year Carpenter Apprentice

“Training provides additional assistance in understanding
how to safely work in areas that I may not be experienced. I
appreciate Kokosing’s safety culture and want to be able to
be more comfortable in performing tasks that will contribute to
that safety culture.”
Matthew Lee, 3rd Year Laborer Apprentice 5

“I appreciate the encouragement to continue my training by
J.J. LaFever and others. Training makes me more diverse and
prepared for the various types of work.”
Scott Gilbert, Journeyman Laborer

“Training is helping me better understand the tasks that will 6
help me be successful on the projects.”
Karsten Vuillemot, 1st year Laborer Apprentice

“By taking rigging and signaling, it has provided me the
opportunity to work; while others that are not certified do not
get asked.”
Thomas Howley, 1st Year Laborer Apprentice

                                                                            7 8
“By taking training, it provides job security.”
