Mystery of Transfiguration
There is a relief in the mind of the reader or audience when the truth behind a mystery or
detective series is unveiled in the end or at some stage of the narration. The poignant question
about who really was Jesus, with regard to His suffering, is a problem in the mind of the
general public during His earthly life. The apostles were no exception to this. The question of
Jesus to them at Caesarea Philippi best describes this: Who do you say that I am? Only Simon
could come up with the answer, in fact it was revealed to him, and that resulted in him being
proclaimed the first among the apostles.
But the journey of the apostles to that realization was an arduous and hard one in reality. The
mystery surrounding Jesus is revealed to the select trio among the apostles on Mount Tabore
where He revealed His glory in a glimpse. The Old Testament was about to give way to the
Good News in and through Jesus Christ. This is the symbolism of Transfiguration to us.
Moses, the renowned lawgiver, and Elijah the Prophet stood in awe before Him. Moses and
Elijah represented the whole of the Old Testament: the Law and the Prophets. They vanish and
Jesus in his dazzling glory emerges to the forefront as the one who fulfills Law and the
Prophets. Jesus very well knew that the apostles would grasp the reality only by and by after
the Transfiguration, only after the Resurrection. And we know, despite these epiphanies in the
life of the apostles, they were the ones to desert Him in moments of agony and crucifixion.
In Greek drama, especially the Tragedies, there is a resultant purification in the mind of the
audience after witnessing the pain and suffering on the stage. It is called ‘catharsis.’ In the
words of John Milton, the English poet, the resulting peace in mind is a state of ‘calm of mind
all passions spent.’ What will be our attitude towards the Passion, the Suffering and the
Crucifixion of Jesus as we go through them during this Lent? It is not just the psychological
exercise, a catharsis, but a journey, a way of the Cross with him to join Him in his Resurrec-
tion and Ascension. It is the privileged vision of Transfiguration for us to witness through our
willingness to be with Him once again.
Wish you all a journey with the Lord through the mystery of Transfiguration.
Fr. Sebastian T. Augustine, CMI
