Support Queenslanders living with diabetes
More than 236,000 Queenslanders are living with all types of diabetes right now. It is a little
known fact that diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Australia, and is the fastest
growing chronic condition worldwide.

Diabetes Queensland is a charity and membership organisation providing practical education
programs, essential advice, ongoing support services and advocacy to Queenslanders living
with diabetes, and those at risk.

Through our programs and partnerships with industry, government and community groups, we
work to ensure diabetes care is always improving and evolving.

Our vital programs would not be possible without the generous support of our fundraisers. The
2018 Great Ocean Road Trek is a charity event and has a minimum fundraising target of $1,250
per person.

We recommend creating an online fundraising page through Everyday Hero. You can
personalise the page with photos, your story and updates as you go. By creating an online
fundraising page, you will have a unique URL that can be easily emailed to your family, friends
and colleagues, and shared on social media. You may like to create a team fundraising page.

Additionally, Diabetes Queensland will supply you with donation boxes and receipt books for
offline donations. We encourage you to look at different ways to raise funds in the lead-up to
the trek, such as organising a free-dress day at work, a raffle or trivia night.

The Diabetes Queensland team is here to support your fundraising journey. We will provide you
with tips, tricks and advice to help you reach your goal. Our group target for the 2018 Great
Ocean Road Trek is $25,000.

“We had no problems fundraising, despite living in a
    small community,” Jennifer, 2016 participant.

What to pack
The Great Ocean Road Trek is 100km and requires some specialist gear. This gear includes
quality hiking boots or walking shoes, with adequate support and grip. We recommend trekking
poles, as the terrain is challenging at times, particularly during wet weather. You will also need a
suitable daypack with room for water, food, camera, extra clothing and other supplies as
required. A personal medical kit is recommended.
You will need to prepare for possible wet and/or cold weather. We recommend packing wet-
weather gear, such as a rain jacket, and warm clothing/thermals.
A full checklist of items is included in your Welcome Pack.

Travel
Participants are required to organise their own flights, choosing to travel directly to the
accommodation or meet at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport for transfer to the venue. Please
book your flights to arrive before 12:00pm on Thursday 18 October and depart after 4:00pm on
Wednesday 24 October 2018 to allow time for travel and unexpected delays.

Accommodation
Each night, you will stay in shared cabins at the award-winning Bimbi Park in Cape Otway. The
cabins have two or three separate bedrooms, with a shared bathroom and living area. The cabins
are sheltered among tall manna gums, far away from the noise of towns and traffic. In the local
indigenous language, ‘bimbi’ means ‘a place of many birds,’ and the park’s bushland is alive with
birdsong. Bimbi Park offers local advice, good beds, hot showers, and incredible meals near the
magnificent beaches, forests, secluded bays and spectacular coastline you will be trekking.
If you are planning to do this trek alone, we can arrange for you to share accommodation with
another participant of the same gender.
Please note, phone reception is limited at Bimbi Park and along the track.

“The standard of meals was exceptional; the food really was amazing,”
                               Gaynor, 2017 participant.

as you are fit enough to participate. A responsible adult must accompany children under the

What if I am not fit enough to participate?
Participants must provide a medical certificate from their GP prior to the trek that confirms they

exercise program to help you prepare.

A representative from Diabetes Queensland (not a health professional) will lead the trek.

How do I register?
Please return your completed booking form and deposit to fundraising@diabetesqld.org.au or
GPO Box 9824, BRISBANE Q 4001.

Can I talk to someone about the trek?
Please contact the Diabetes Queensland fundraising team on 1800 177 055 or email
fundraising@diabetesqld.org.au if you have any questions or would like more information. Our
fundraising team will be with you every step of the way, providing advice and information to
prepare you for this trek.

“This incredible adventure requires a good level of fitness. Most days will involve eight to
nine hours of hiking across uneven and varied terrain with steep inclines, steps and small
amounts of climbing,” Sam, 2016 trek leader.
