Welcome to the RHS
At the Royal Horticultural Society, we have been inspiring a love of all things
gardening for more than 200 years. Quite simply, we believe that gardens and
gardening make the world a nicer place. According to recent research, more
than 90% of people said that just looking at a garden lifts their mood. So what
better way to enjoy a fantastic day out with your group than by switching off,
relaxing and going to somewhere where you can be surrounded by the beauty
of plants and fresh air.
With four – soon to be five – world class RHS gardens in all corners of the country as well
as inspirational flower shows from London to Cardiff and Devon to Derbyshire, you’re spoilt
for choice. Offering a different experience on every visit, with an ever changing calendar of
events and experiences, our gardens and shows are loved by all from the most experienced
horticulturists to weekend gardeners, as well as those who simply enjoy the great outdoors.
Groups are welcome at all our gardens and shows, and we’re delighted that this has been
recognised with Coach Friendly Status now being awarded to all our gardens and RHS Garden
Wisley being voted Best Garden for Groups by GTO Magazine readers.
Make 2020 the year that you experience the many delights the RHS has to offer. We look forward
to welcoming you very soon.

RHS Gardens: A Delight Throughout the Seasons
From Flower Shows and winter walks to rose festivals, sculpture trails and craft
showcases, RHS gardens are inspirational at any time of year with something different to
see and experience every visit.
As well as the year round events, the gardens themselves have been carefully curated – building
on our 215 years of experience – to ensure they are a delight throughout the seasons.
Visit in spring for incredible bulb displays and carpets of spring flowers, or enjoy the rich shades
of autumn. Winter in our gardens brings beautiful stem colour and shape, whilst summer is a fiesta
of colour and scent with fabulous roses, cottage gardens and mixed borders.
2020 is a particularly exciting time for RHS Gardens as a new addition – RHS Garden Bridgewater in
Greater Manchester, the first new RHS Garden for 17 years – opens its gates.

What’s new at our Gardens?
Here are some highlights of the latest developments at our beautiful gardens.

 Discover the new Wisley
Visitors to RHS Garden Wisley can now enjoy a fantastic new Welcome building, which has transformed the
 arrival experience at the garden.
With landscaping from multi-award winning Christopher Bradley-Hole, an additional 250 native trees have
been planted in and around the car park and visitors now enter the 240-acre garden through an avenue of
100 cherry trees. The new welcome area, opened by RHS Ambassador Alan Titchmarsh in June 2019, has
a wonderful 100-seater restaurant, cafe, huge shop and amazing plant centre. Covering the space of some
four Olympic pools, the new plant centre offers a larger variety of rare and unusual plants than anywhere
 else in Britain.
The area forms part of an exciting period of transformation with a project worth some £70 million which
also includes the creation of the UK’s first National Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning, opening
in 2020, and the the restoration of the garden’s iconic Laboratory. This ground-breaking centre for science
and learning will inspire the next generation of horticulturists and show the RHS’s previously unseen, yet
hugely significant, scientific work to visitors.

As the historic home of the RHS,
RHS Garden Wisley is one of the
world’s greatest gardens, with one
of the largest plant collections in the
world and many cultivated plants of
national significance.
Founded over 100 years ago by George Fergusson Wilson,
it is the oldest and most diverse of the four RHS gardens.
Far from being a museum of plants and conservation, Wisley
is all about inspirational gardening, with plants and planting
schemes constantly updated ensuring there is always
something new to inspire and excite.
Its 240 acres are hugely diverse, with a range of gardens,
borders and attractions – all of which adapt throughout the
seasons for a year round experience.
The team that help create this magic comprise some
75 garden staff, 25 students, four apprentices and 100
volunteers – all working together to help make a day at
Wisley an amazing experience for all our visitors.
Garden Highlights for Groups
Full of inspiration for gardeners, with over 30,000 plant varieties, 240 acres and countless
different styles, the gardens at RHS Garden Wisley are a delight throughout the year.
There are 26 different inspirational areas of the garden listed in our guide book and map.
We recommend a guided tour for £3 per person (see page 10 –11), which will take you to
see what is looking best on the day of your visit. Here are just some of our favourites.

Nestled in the beautiful Torridge
Valley between Exmoor and Dartmoor
National Parks, RHS Garden Rosemoor
is a hidden gem, surrounded by
woodland and enhanced by the natural
beauty of North Devon.
A treat for garden lovers throughout the year, Rosemoor
is as inspirational to the amateur gardener as it is awe-
inspiring to nature lovers and plant enthusiasts. The original
garden was created by Lady Anne Berry, over a period of
some thirty years. It was offered to the RHS in 1988 and has
continued to be developed as a true plantsman’s garden
ever since.
Spread across 65 acres, Rosemoor features a huge diversity
of planting displays. With the largest rose gardens in the
South West, it is consistently voted one of the best places in
the UK to see roses.
Rosemoor’s extensive calendar of events is perfect for
groups. Choose from horticultural shows, craft fairs and
live music events, all set against the beautiful backdrop of
the garden.

the surrounding landscapes including water features,
dry stone walling and wooded areas.
Initially laid out around the site of a Victorian hotel and

and opened Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens in 1950.
Amalgamating with the RHS in 2001, the garden has
continued to develop. Groups love its authentic Yorkshire

Opening Summer 2020
2020 will see the opening of the RHS’s
fifth garden, RHS Garden Bridgewater,
in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Named after the historic Bridgewater Canal
which runs along the southern end of the
site, RHS Garden Bridgewater is set in the
grounds of the former Worsley New Hall,
a 19th century residence which was
formerly the estate of the First Earl of
Ellesmere. The master plan for RHS Garden
Bridgewater has been created by leading
landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith.
Though the mansion no longer remains, echoes of the
original gardens, including the historic walled garden,
ice-house, lake and formal terraces, can still be seen.
Highlights of Bridgewater will include the restored 11 acre
Weston Walled Garden, one of the largest walled gardens
in the country. This will encompass several large gardens
within it, including a Wellbeing Garden, which will provide
a horticultural haven and an Orchard Garden and Bee and
Butterfly Garden focusing on traditional fruit trees. These
will sit alongside a Kitchen Garden designed by RHS Chelsea
Flower Show gold medalists Charlotte Harris and Hugo
Bugg; a Paradise Garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith; a
Learning Garden designed by students from Manchester
Metropolitan University and Community Grow Plots.
There will also be a unique Chinese Streamside Garden,
which has been created in partnership with the local Group Admission
Chinese community, celebrating the huge contribution
of Chinese plants and gardening traditions. and Guided Tours
