Beard Resophonic Round Neck Guitars
The acoustical physics of resonator guitars differ from those of the soundboard acoustic guitar. The resonator’s
wood body vibrates much less and acts more like a loudspeaker enclosure, directing and shaping the vibrations
from the resonator cone. The cone should be as thin as possible to produce maximum volume and tone, without
collapsing from string tension. Beard cones are hand-spun in Maryland, using the original Dopyera brothers’ lathe.
The method of casting the spider bridge also effects tone. The temperature of the aluminum during casting must
be closely monitored for the final spider to have the best tone.

Béla and Gold Tone president Wayne Rogers met at the
Summer NAMM music trade show to discuss a new type of
banjo. Béla and his wife, Abigail Washburn, were about to
begin a concert tour, and since they would be performing
many banjo duets he wanted a deeper-voiced instrument
to compliment and blend with Abby’s standard-tuned
banjo.
They decided to voice the Missing Link halfway between
the standard G-tuned banjo and our octave-lower cello
banjo. Thus, the ML-1 is tuned to cGCEG. This is a fifth
lower than open G. They also decided on a twelve inch pot,
because the larger the pot, the more low-end output.
Béla The name, The Missing Link, was Béla’s idea. He said
Fleck that the ML-1 was the missing link between the cello
banjo and the regular five-string. Béla recorded with it on
five of the tracks on Abigail and Béla’s 2014 duet album
(Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn), which debuted at #1 on
Billboard Magazine’s Bluegrass chart.

In late 2018, “Banjo Ben” Clark, Jake Stogdill, and Robby Boone
had a concept for replicating one of the most iconic banjos, played
by the one of the most iconic banjo players of all time, JD Crowe’s
original RB-3 (“Banger”). After extensive research, and with great
attention to every detail, Gold Tone was able to rebirth this classic
banjo.
What makes this banjo truly unique is its “No Hole” tone ring,
which really tightens up the sustain. It also features the original
measurements on the headstock, neck and body, nickel plated
hardware, slanted resonator walls, vintage inlay, a Presto tail-
piece, concentric resonator rings, and a brown mahogany finish.
We’ve designed hundreds of banjos in the last 25 years, but tone-
wise, this outperforms every previous model.

In the late 1800s, Fairbanks (later Vega) invented a three-part tone ring originally called the “Electric”. This was later
turned upside-down and then used to power the “Whyte Laydie” range of banjos (so named for the clear maple used
