Child Action North West, The Homestead, Whalley Road, Wilpshire, Blackburn, BB1 9LL

Join us as we step back in time this September! As one of East Lancashire’s longest-serving children’s charities, we’re
looking forward to lifting the lid on our fascinating history this September.

CANW Heritage Day will take place on Sunday 16th September from 10am to 4pm and our theme for this year is
“Extraordinary Women”.
As a charity, CANW was built on the foundations of Blackburn Orphanage, which was formed by James Dixon in
1892. Heritage Day will include an interactive exhibition with admission books from the orphanage, photographs and
cot plaques on display, plus a series of talks. Trevor Booth, who was left at Blackburn Orphanage in 1934, will be
sharing captivating stories about the Extraordinary Women that crossed his path while growing up with us.

There will also be two special talks that will bring to life the history of Jane Dixon, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Wilbraham and
Mrs Street, four long-serving women of the orphanage. We’ll also be hosting a nostalgically-themed tea room with
refreshments and we’ll have an arts and crafts table fully stocked for children.
                                                                                                                        2
Sue Cotton, CEO of CANW, said: “Blackburn Orphanage has such a rich history, something which we’re proud to still
be living and breathing as CANW.

Darwen’s New World War One Memorial, Darwen Western Cemetery (the old cemetery), Cemetery Road,
Darwen, BB3 2LS

Come and see Darwen's newest memorial to those who served and died in the First World War. Built to coincide
with the centenary of the conflict, it contains ten granite panels telling of the impact on the local people.
Commemorative book available.

Out of the 1300 members of the armed forces from Darwen who died in the First World War, Darwen Western
Cemetery contains the graves of over 70. They lie in family graves scattered around the cemetery, with none of the
cohesion found in formal military cemeteries. The new memorial wall brings together their names and tells some of
the story of the war on ten specially commissioned black granite panels. The wall is faced with terracotta tiles of
unique design which represent the wickerwork hurdles used to support the walls of the trenches. The panels were
designed with the help of local school children.

There is an accompanying book which gives the story of each of the casualties, where they were born, where they
lived and worked before the war and how they died. The book will be on sale on Sunday 9 September, when our
historian will be in attendance to advise on how to get more information about Darwen's Soldiers, Sailors and
Airmen.

Opening Times: Sunday 9 September: 10.00-14.00

Ritherdon Factory Tour, Ritherdon & Co Ltd, Lorne Street Works, Lorne Street, Darwen, Lancashire, BB3 1QW

Established in 1895, Ritherdon is one of the oldest companies in Lancashire.

                                                                                                                      6
Join us for a Factory Tour and see how manufacturing and machinery has evolved over the years and how it all began
with a little bit of magic!

Originally based in Bolton, the business began by electroplating and enamelling for the Edwardian bicycle boom and
making tricks for magicians.

Making it through 2 World Wars, times and circumstances created an opportunity for Ritherdon to manufacture the
first of what are now commonly known as the multipurpose steel enclosures you see up and down the country
today, by the road side and most recently powering EV Charging points.

The company moved to Darwen's old Tram Shed in 1947 and the product range just kept growing. Providing
solutions for industries such as the electricity board led us to design the first of our meter box repair units, which
went on to grow into the full range we have today.

Along with our dedicated team, we now also design and manufacture a range of Passive Fire Protection units and
Passive Roadside Cabinets.

Join us when we open our doors, to see how the machinery and manufacturing process have evolved over the years
and take a look at the tram lines still taking pride of place in the factory and hear how most recently, our factory was
used by local Artist, Nicola Ellis to create some amazing artwork for The Festival of Making 2018.

Ritherdon will finish this amazing month off by holding their annual Family Fun Day!

For more information, visit our website Ritherdon.co.uk and connect with us via social media via Twitter @Ritherdon

St. Anne's Parish Church, High Street, Turton, Bolton, Lancashire, BL7 0ER

Our event reflects on the Heritage of our community and gives examples of how this can be experienced.
We have created features which have involved a most eclectic spread of people who can give historic examples with
primary source material.

St Anne's Church offers a great deal of interest to the visitor. Guided tours of the building are to be provided with a
booklet outlining the major features of the church. Built in 1840 to replace a Chapel of Ease, it is the Parish Church
for our community.
Recently it has been the focus of a survey by The Arts Society, Bolton and their Church Recorders who are to mount
a display of what they do and some of their findings for St Anne's.
A film created by senior citizens and year 6 children from our local primary school will be run at intervals on both
days. This was a lot of fun and it comes across as a very happy event.
A local craft group have created a series of banners covering our local history from 1900 and these will be on display
throughout the weekend - with guidance notes .
A village art group will be completing a triptych reflecting heritage past into present.
Displays created by our Toddler group working with members of our Mothers' Union entitled 'FOOTSTEPS' will be on
view.
In response to the thread about the role of women since 1918 we are creating a tribute to 10 women who have
made a special mark in the North West during that period, for example Libby Lane, Susan Issacs, Miss Barlow.
Discovering the heritage of our local W.I. , Cricket Club, Local History Society, Ladies Group, local authors and a
chance to view our Parish Registers are some more of the great opportunities which will be available on the two
days 15th and 16th September.

an hour. St Anne's is part of the Turton Moorland Ministry within the Diocese of Manchester.
