IAPS Annual
Conference 2019

       Message from Christopher King
       Chief Executive, IAPS

A very warm welcome to the 2019 IAPS Annual Conference.

It’s been a year full of challenges, many of them financial, but the resilience
of the schools in membership of IAPS has really shone through. The
determination you have shown in finding a way through the increase in
the teachers’ pension contributions also show the Association schools at
their most nimble. A great concern to keep any fee increases down to a
minimum has underpinned the strategies you have each adopted and IAPS
HQ has tried hard to keep you informed of the unfolding situation and set
out options for you. Despite great uncertainty politically and the wider
economic challenges, I remain optimistic for our members, their schools
and for the sector as a whole.

This year’s Conference offers you the joint prospect of stimulating new
ideas in a diverse range of subjects as well as a wealth of practical
strategies for you to take back to your schools. You will, no doubt, share
and exchange ideas with colleagues but I hope you will leave London
this year enthused with ideas for taking your school forward during the
next twelve months. I am enormously grateful to the IAPS HQ team who
support you throughout the year and for the invaluable part they play in
making the Conference run so well. I look forward to meeting as many of
you as possible during the two days we are together and to learning of
your personal and your school’s achievements.

                                                                                         Page 2

Subject seminar sessions – Thursday 26 September:

                             Session 1:
                             Mastering Maths and changing mindsets
                             Paul Borrows

This seminar will briefly review recent changes in maths education, focusing
on mastery approaches to teaching maths and promoting a growth mindset
                             in the maths classroom.

                             Session 2:
                             Time with the School Counsellor
                             Caroline Yolland

“Counselling, at its core, is about building a trusting relationship where a client
feels comfortable enough to talk about the difficulties they are experiencing.”
In order to develop a healthy, kind, caring and warm relationship with other
people, it is important to have an awareness of how we feel about ourselves
                             – our self-care. Emotional connectivity is a key part of being human.

                             Session 3:
pulchra sunt difficilia: Challenges in Classics teaching
                             Ed Clarke

Limited timetabling, linguistic complexities and the loss of grammatical rigour
from other branches of language teaching are some – though by no means all
                             – of the difficulties facing the contemporary Classics teacher. Ed will expound
upon these issues, as well as endeavouring to find their solutions.

                                                                                                               Page 7

IAPS Annual
Conference 2019

            Session 4:
Pre-prep and Early Years – Where it all starts…
            Phil Hardy

Exploring curriculum designs and pedagogy that meet the needs of all
children and are leading the way in the education system in England.
There will also be an update on Pre-prep and Early Years issues for all Prep
            schools.

            Session 5:
            Relationships – Roots and Wings
            Jenny Burrett

A successful school hinges on thriving relationships, from those of the Head to
those of the youngest pupil, not to mention those of the staff and parents. We
are modelling and preparing people for all manner of relationships and there is
considerable pressure on schools to ensure the physical, mental and emotional
health of each child and often members of staff. With unhelpful stress in the
background of so many people’s lives, energy, inspiration, communication
and effectiveness can often be compromised. Through sharing case studies
and ideas, this session will provide a reassuring approach to delivering this
challenge and ensuring that you make a sustainable difference to those in your
            care and beyond.

            Session 6:
Please don’t take my ICT suite!
            Fiona Price

A look at not only the importance of cross-curricular ICT but the need to
retain fixed suites in schools. Amongst the talk of mobile devices and the
ways that they are not only enhancing and transforming learning, please don’t
            forget the humble ICT suite.

            Session 7:
Causing a scene – Who needs the Drama?
            Spencer Hinton

IAPS Drama Subject Adviser and ex-professional theatre director, Spencer
Hinton (RSC/National Theatre) discusses the vital role Drama has to play in
a well-rounded prep school education, why Headteachers must be creative
in making it happen and how IAPS can offer specific subject guidance and
            support for your school.

                                                                                           Page 8

Conference 2019

Seminar Sessions – Friday 27 September:

            Session A:
            Inspection: Now and the Future
            Kate Richards, ISI

The session will focus on current issues in inspection and will share the
draft plans for the development of the next ISI framework. It will give
delegates the opportunity to share their thinking about the strengths and
areas for development in the current framework in order to inform ISI’s
            thinking.

            Session B:
Keeping your business model sustainable and strong
in the face of future pressures’ - teacher pay, fee
affordability and maintaining a clear identity
Rhiannon Cutler, Baines Cutler Solutions Ltd

In this session, Rhiannon will draw on data collected in the Baines Cutler
benchmarking surveys as well as her experience advising the sector to
address the common business issues facing prep schools and what to do if
you want a sustainable business model for the future.

            Session C:
            What does CE stand for?
            Durell Barnes, ISEB

There has been much discussion in recent months about ISEB 13+ CE and
whether it should most appropriately be considered to be a common
entrance hurdle, a common exit certificate, a common examination with
multiple purposes or a symbol of curriculum excellence. Durell will update
delegates on last year’s consultation process and provide an opportunity
for discussion about how ISEB’s 13+ CE syllabi and assessment can be
most useful to schools and pupils in aiding effective transfer from prep to
            senior schools.

                                                                                          Page 9

            Session F:
            With change comes opportunity
            Paul Derbyshire, Succession Wealth

With the increase in employers’ contributions and Court decisions on the
Judicial and Firefighters’ Pension Schemes awaited, the TPS is going through
a time of change. Decisions made could result in fundamental change to the
            Scheme and its funding.
We will look at how schools and members can make the best of situations
            that arise.

and barriers to delivering effective lessons, practical ways to run a fun and
engaging session, equipment, soft ball v hard ball and the pathway for
            female cricketers in England.

                                                                                            Page 11
