INFORMATION PACK 2019
ABOUT BREAD & CIRCUS – WORLD BUSKERS FESTIVAL
Bread & Circus builds upon, and re-imagines Christchurch’s celebrated World Buskers Festival. We
will maintain the heart of the festival with street performance and busking but enhance the festival
through the addition of high-quality and accessible artistic experiences that propel the festival and
our artists onto an international platform and engage our diverse community like never before.

The festival will take place over 4 weekends, 3 weeks, and will be centered around a major hub that
spans the Botanical Gardens to Cathedral Square. With more than 500 Performances by talented
local and international acts! The program will include a range of free, hatted, subsidised ticketed
events and full-priced ticketed events.

    • A FESTIVAL HUB & SPIEGELTENT CHRISTCHURCH: A central festival hub with local food vendors,
       pop up bar and outdoor area. The central hub will see temporary construction of the Victoria
       Spiegeltent will be hosting a multi-faceted program of major national and international talent
       that will run until the 3rd February. Programming includes the intoxicating international show
       LIMBO, 2018 ‘Best Magic Show’ Kevin Quantum, and the award-winning contemporary show
       band Modern Maori Quartet!

    • BACKSTAGE SOCIAL CLUB - The new home for Christchurch Arts run by Strut N Fret NZ and the
       place to be this Festival! Hosting international shows such as The Miss Behave Gameshow
       straight from Vegas and Christchurch very own Guy Montgomery.

    • FREE STREET PERFORMANCE: Free and hatted street performance will bring the city to life and
       take over the streets of Christchurch throughout the first ten days of the festival. Be sure to
       catch one of the highlights of the Festival - Butch Loscin, aka Skeleton of Colour who uses
       colorful smoke bombs to create visually captivating images! See local legends Shay Horay
       Mullet Man and Josh Grimaldi return to the streets of Christchurch.

    • ISAAC THEATRE ROYAL - Hosting not one, but THREE Galas across the first ten days of the
       Festival showcasing belly laughing, cheek aching entertainment for both kids and adults.

    • CHRIST’S COLLEGE - Home to The Old Boys Theatre and Assembly Hall, both hosting star
       studded lineup’s from across the globe! Be sure to check out Hot Brown Honey a female
       empowerment explosion of hip hop and politics and the award winning Piff The Magic
       Dragon performing jaw dropping magic tricks!

We are seeking enthusiastic, dedicated and skilled people to help us make Bread & Circus – World
Buskers Festival an incredible Festival!

Why Volunteer?
Volunteers are an integral part of the Bread & Circus - World Buskers Festival. Volunteering puts you
at the heart of the action as we deliver a world-class event, whilst celebrating a rich 25-year history.

Volunteering will not only get you amongst the community, it will provide a platform to develop
existing skills knowledge and experience in the events and arts industry, make new friends and
partnerships, give you industry networking experience, a sense of accomplishment and of course a
whole lot of fun!

At the end of every shift worked you will be provided with an Admit One to be used in conjunction
with your staff pass to see shows across the festival for free! Along with receiving discounts on Food
and Drink in the Festival Hub and other discounts from sponsors of the B&CWBF

Volunteer Roles
There are a number of roles available:
   •   FOH ushering at performance venues
   •   Box Office
   •   Assisting staff with administration in the festival office
   •   Greeting and guiding patrons and informing them about the Festival
   •   Meeting and greeting artists and performers
   •   Production support
   •   Site set up and bump out

*All Roles will take place within the Christchurch CBD. Please note volunteer roles will change from
day to day and may require you to be flexible and take initiative.

What’s involved?
Bread & Circus - World Buskers Festival is packed full of vibrant events and we need enthusiastic
volunteers who can contribute to this atmosphere and keep our Festival visitors happy and safe,
whilst also enabling them to enjoy their visit. Previous experience is not essential, as long as you are
reliable, personable and enthusiastic. We would like our volunteers to have a positive attitude!
If you are able to work as a part of a team, follow direction and have the ability to communicate to
the general public in a friendly and professional manner then we want to hear from you!

We ask that our Volunteers
   •   Be available for a minimum of 6 shifts across the 25-day festival between the 10th January -
       3rd February 2019.
> Volunteers contribute 25 -30 hours of time across the the Festival, with a high number of shifts
    available across the first 10 days, 10th -20th January. Shifts will range from 4 - 5 hours. Some
    volunteers also help before the Festival, assisting with site setup and administration behind the
    scenes.

    •   Be able to attend a compulsory training evening on Monday 7th January 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    >This training will provide vital information for you to take part in the B&CWBF Volunteers
    Program, where you will pick up your B&CWBF T-shirts and staff passes, get to know your Shift
    Supervisors and the rest of the Bread & Circus Team.

    •   Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older

Shift Structure

On every shift you will report directly to your Shift Supervisor who will brief you and the volunteer
team for that day and provide ongoing support to you throughout your shift. We use the buddy
system when creating roles - meaning you will never be expected to complete a task on your own,
always being paired with another volunteer!

Expenses

All Volunteers must arrange their own meals and travel.

Application Process:
    •   Set aside 10 – 15 minutes to complete the online application
    •   After the closing date The Bread and Circus team will review your application and determine
        whether you are eligible to volunteer.
    •   Applicants may be asked to attend a group interview with other volunteers and the
        Volunteers Manager in Christchurch, in the first week of December 2018.
    •   You will be notified on the outcome of your application by the 11th December
    •   Once you have accepted your roles as a volunteer we will determine where you best
        placed in the festival based on your experience, availability and motivation for volunteering.
    •   The festival will be using an online rostering system called Deputy, if successful, you will be
        asked to submit your availabilities for the festival period and a roster will then be sent out in
        late December with a brief summary of your role/s during the festival.

All Rounder - Volunteer Position Description, 2019

                             Backstage Social Club – 2 Worcester Blvd, Christchurch Central
                             Christ’s College - 4900 Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch Central, 8140
                             Other locations within Central Christchurch CBD as required.

  Time Commitment            6 Shifts over a 25-day period varying in length from 4 - 5 hours.

  Reporting to               Volunteers Manager

  Key Relationships          Volunteers Manager, Box Office Manager, Front of House Mangers,
                             B&CWBF Management Team, Artists and B&CWBF Volunteers

  Support and Supervision    On each day Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival will provide services

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Report too and sign in with the Front of House Manager or Volunteers Manager at the beginning of
  your shift, at the rostered start time.
• Provide professional and high-quality customer service to all patrons, staff and stakeholders at all
  times
• Become familiar with the Festivals Program, being able to provide accurate information to patrons
• Working with venue staff, assist with the daily operations of a designated venue, helping the venue
  run to schedule by ushering audiences in and out in an orderly manner and helping with show
  turns rounds.
• Working closely with Box Office Staff, provide assistance with the Box Office queues,
  communication regarding the program and ticket collection.
• Work closely with venue technicians to provide basic assistance
• Administrative tasks where required
• Assist with signage and other marketing materials such as programs and flyers
• Provide assistance in site-specific event support
• Help to maintain the cleanliness of Bread & Circus venues, busking pitches, and Spiegeltent Hub
• Help to supervise the public during performances- ensure that no photography or filming occurs
  during the shows
• Proactively monitor your rostered venue and report and risks to the front of House Manager.
• Make announcements to festival patrons as required
• Any other task reasonably requested by B&CWBF Management.
