ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
       OF TERRITORY

Queen’s University is situated on traditional
Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee Territory. To
acknowledge this traditional territory is to recognize its
longer history, one predating the establishment of the
earliest European colonies. It is also to acknowledge
this territory’s significance for the Indigenous peoples
who lived, and continue to live, upon it – people whose
practices and spiritualities were tied to the land and
continue to develop in relationship to the territory and
its other inhabitants today. The Kingston Indigenous
community continues to reflect the area’s Anishinaabe
and Haudenosaunee roots. There is also a significant
Métis community and there are First Peoples from
other Nations across Turtle Island present here today.

A MESSAGE FROM THE
I.C.B.C. CO-CHAIRS
Dear esteemed colleagues,

Welcome to the 2021 Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.)! On behalf of
our Executive Team, we would like to extend a warm welcome to you all for our 43rd
year of competition. For years, I.C.B.C. has hosted Canada’s oldest, largest and most
prestigious undergraduate business competition at the Smith School of Business,
Queen’s University. Despite the challenges we are all facing this year in light of the
COVID-19 pandemic, our mission is to connect future business leaders from across the
world and equip them with case experience, business acumen and industry outlook.

Students will first compete in a virtual Preliminary Round before qualifying for the
Final Weekend. This year, we recognize the challenges that are before us due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our community has been our utmost priority
during this pandemic and, as such, we have made the decision to postpone final
decisions regarding the nature of the final round until November, at the latest. Our
team is working tirelessly to redefine I.C.B.C. given these circumstances, to provide a
seamless experience for all stakeholders. We will continue to monitor guidelines set
in place by the health authorities to keep all of our stakeholders safe and healthy. We
look forward to updating you with more information as the year progresses and as we
continue to make plans for Final Weekend 2021.

This information package is designed to provide you with everything you need to
acquaint yourself with the 2021 I.C.B.C! Any additional updates and information will
be released by our University Liaison, Conor Macfarlane, prior to the competition.

In closing, we could not be more excited to serve as the Co-Chairpersons for the 2021
I.C.B.C.! Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, our team has witnessed a
surge of excitement in preparation for our event. It is our greatest hope to share
this excitement with you all this coming year. Until then, stay safe and let’s all

I.C.B.C. VALUE
The Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.) is a student-run
organization within the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University.
For 43 years, I.C.B.C. has been charged with running the school’s official
undergraduate case competitions and serves to educate and challenge the
leaders of tomorrow.

Through the spirit of competition, I.C.B.C. hopes to instill a sense of comradery
and pride, and to prepare students for the ever-changing business climate that
awaits them after graduation. With eight competition streams - Accounting,
Business Policy, Debate, Ethics, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, and
Management Information Systems - I.C.B.C. provides a unique and challenging
case experience for students entering any industry.

In these uncertain times, competitions like I.C.B.C. become increasingly
important. Regardless of whether we will be competing in-person or virtually
for Final Weekend 2021, the unwavering mission of this event has always
been to bring students together - and this year is no different. With the future
unknown, the world will need strong, intelligent, and outspoken leaders to
guide it.

  KEY CHANGES
Given the current global circumstances, the world of business
competition is evolving. In response to these developments, I.C.B.C.
has decided to make modifications to certain rules for this year.
      1. In fairness to competing teams, there will be no international
      invitational.
      2. We also realize that some events may require rule changes for
Final Weekend. Any changes to rules will be clearly communicated as
they occur, and a consolidated list of updated rules will be released
      prior to Final Weekend.
      3. Due to the potential of a virtual Final Weekend 2021, we are
looking into the best way to host the debate which may result in
modifications of the debate style. We will continue to update you as
      we know more.

THE PRELIMINARY ROUND
I.C.B.C.’s competitive process begins with the Preliminary Round in October 2020.
The results from this round will determine which competitors will qualify for the Final
Weekend in January 2021. The Preliminary Round consists of a business case that
must be submitted two weeks after its release. Once submitted, the cases for each
competitive event will be evaluated by industry professionals. The top six successful
teams in each stream will be invited to Final Weekend, with the exception of Business
Policy, from which the top five teams will be invited. Following the Preliminary Round,
all teams will also be sent their respective rubrics and judges’ feedback.

THE COMPETITIVE STRUCTURE CONT’D

THE CASES
Preliminary Round cases are generally 10 to 20 pages in length. These
comprehensive cases provide competitors with background information about
organizations, the business environment, and issues at stake. Cases for this round
are typically written by Queen’s Smith School of Business professors or industry
professionals. Each case is unique to I.C.B.C.

THE REPORT
Competitors are asked to write a report of a maximum of 5 pages of text and five
pages of exhibits to communicate their recommendations. Since competitors are
given approximately two weeks to read the case and write the report, judges have
very high expectations regarding the quality of analysis and solutions provided.
Teams are provided with a template for the report, allowing competitors to
prepare an organized and structured submission.

THE PRELIMINARY ROUND
Preliminary Round judges are Queen’s University professors and industry
professionals who volunteer to read and assess over 160 case submissions
across the seven events. Many of these judges have been involved with I.C.B.C.
for numerous years and are experts in their respective disciplines. In each
competitive event, Preliminary Round judges meet to discuss the case and
their approach to solving the issues at stake. The judges then read and mark
the case submissions and provide comprehensive feedback. They then rank the
submissions so that the top six schools are invited to compete at Final Weekend
(top five for Business Policy).
