Celebrating 50 Years
Celebrating 50 Years
We have a lot to celebrate this year! October 2021 will mark the
resumption of live orchestral performance at the Capitol Theatre,
and we have lined up an epic 2021-22 season to mark the 50th
anniversary of the first full season of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra
after its founding in April 1971. The Yakima Valley Classical Series
begins with one of four programs from our interrupted 2019-20
season. Highlighting our talented string section, Serenade for
Strings includes three of the most celebrated string orchestra pieces
ever written: Barber’s Adagio, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade and Vaughan
Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti celebrates the roots
of orchestral repertoire, planted three hundred years ago in a series of works by Johann Sebastian
Bach. Featuring YSO musicians as soloists, we will present all six concerti in one evening! Late
January brings the long-awaited performance of Scheherazade and Other Remarkable Women,
with YSO concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck featured in the orchestral masterpiece by Rimsky-
Korsakov. The YSO’s own Angelique Poteat will star as both clarinet soloist and composer,
performing the Copland Clarinet Concerto and a world premiere composition of her own. We
enjoy a Spring Celebration in March with Copland’s classic Appalachian Spring and Schumann’s
“Spring” Symphony, alongside Tchaikovsky’s ebullient Rococo Variations featuring the principal
cellist of the Seattle Symphony. One of the most beautiful, passionate, intense and challenging
pieces in the entire repertoire, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is like a lifetime represented in music;
Mahler 5 is the perfect way to show how our orchestra has ‘come of age’ over fifty years. We close
out the season with The Magnificent Mendelssohn, featuring the composer’s glorious Symphony
No. 2, the “Lobgesang” (Hymn of Praise), for which we will be joined by our Symphony Chorus.
The Gilbert Orchards Pops Series will be no less epic than the Classical Series. We will begin
with our annual Holiday Pops Spectacular in December. The series continues in January with a
90th birthday celebration of The Music of John Williams. Bohemian Rhapsody: The Music of
Queen will include all the greatest hits of Freddie Mercury and company. In May, we welcome
the Villalobos Brothers, a tremendously talented Mexican-born family of singers, violinists and
composers. We conclude the season in late June with the ever-popular Cirque de la Symphonie:
spectacular acrobatics performed to famous classical music.
To conclude our 50th Anniversary Celebration, in July 2022 we will present a Special Gala
Concert featuring one of the biggest stars of the classical world, violinist Joshua Bell, postponed
from the spring of 2021. We cannot yet confirm the exact date and details, but when we can
this special concert is sure to sell out! For anyone who did not already purchase tickets in 2020,
priority will be given to season ticket holders, so the only way to ensure a seat for this historic
concert is to buy a season subscription.
Over fifty years, many people have contributed love, support, hard work and sacrifice to make
the Yakima Symphony Orchestra what it is today. Come celebrate with us!
Sincerely,
Lawrence Golan

To help celebrate five decades of the Yakima Symphony
Orchestra, violin superstar Joshua Bell will join the Yakima
Symphony Orchestra for a special gala concert in July 2022.
At press time for this brochure, we are unable to confirm the
exact date and program for this momentous performance,
which is being rescheduled from its original date in the
spring of 2021, but we will release all the details as soon as
we are able!
Those who subscribed to the YSO’s 2020–21 season had
the opportunity in 2020 to purchase discounted advance
tickets for this program, and we will continue to honor the
seating reservations of those subscribers who signed up at
that time. We will be in touch with each subscriber who is
holding these tickets to confirm your seating before any new
tickets go on sale.
Once we can announce the new concert date, and place
additional tickets on sale, new discounted ticketing will be
available only to renewing and new 2021-22 YSO subscribers
through the YSO office until January of 2022. At that time, any
remaining tickets will be made available to the general public
at regular prices through the Capitol Theatre box office.
You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime concert
