NATURE FOR LIFE
HUB PROGRAM
CONTEXT
Humanity faces unprecedented planetary crises. According to the IPCC report, we have about a decade
to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change. Furthermore, the IPBES confirms that if biodiversity
loss continues at its current rate, one million species will be at risk of extinction. According to the World
Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report, these are two of the most profound threats facing humanity. The
threats posed by biodiversity loss and climate change are compounded by the rising global inequality
within and between countries, where the world’s 2,150 billionaires own more wealth than 4.6 billion
people combined. Together, biodiversity loss, climate change and rising inequality jeopardize our very
future.
However, we have solutions within our reach. The UNDP 2020 Human Development Report argues that
nature-based human development allows us to tackle the three central challenges of the Anthropocene:
mitigating and adapting to climate change, protecting biodiversity and ecosystems, and ensuring just and
equitable development for all. Healthy ecosystems underpin the Sustainable Development Goals by
supporting economic growth, sustaining billions of livelihoods, providing the basis of food and water
security, and stabilizing our climate. By protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing nature, we can
provide one third of the solution to mitigate climate change, improve water security, and safeguard the
livelihoods of millions of people directly dependent on nature for their subsistence. Furthermore, we have
the solutions to transform the world’s public and private finance, to finally align with nature, and help
accelerate a just, inclusive, nature-positive future.
After a missed ‘Super Year for Nature’ in 2020, the next 12 months are finally aligned to bring decisive
commitments and renewed resolve on action for the planet. Key events include the UN Food Systems
Summit; the Stockholm +49 preparatory summit; the 'Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework' at the
Convention on Biological Diversity’s Conference of Parties in October in Kunming, China; the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of Parties in Glasgow in November; and the UN
Convention to Combat Desertification Conference of Parties in early 2022.
In the run up to those major conferences, it is crucial to build momentum and amplify key messages that
need to be part of those negotiations, and must be shared widely with a global audience. Building on the
success of last year’s virtual event, a coalition of #NatureforLife partners will again collaborate to create a
three-day “Nature for Life Hub.” This virtual space will host a wide variety of provocative content that
highlights the systemic transformations we need, and will showcase solutions and success stories that
can be replicated and scaled up.
The Hub will also include major launches, announcements, and commitments from global leaders, hailing
from a wide variety of sectors, including governments, businesses, financial institutions, youth and
Indigenous peoples and local communities. All events will showcase how we can – and must – respond
to our planetary crises, by launching a decade of hope for nature and humanity.
1NATURE FOR LIFE
HUB PROGRAM
OBJECTIVES OF THE HUB
The Nature for Life Hub will offer a virtual venue for multiple events over three days. Hub organizers will
work with champions, influencers, leaders, and speakers who inspire and engage global audiences.
These events will provide new and dynamic content that will be pre-recorded by partners, and broadcast
live through the official virtual platform. This year, we are focusing on producing content that can be
shared as compelling social media assets, reaching global audiences after the Hub. Over the five days,
the virtual hub will take audiences on various thematic journeys, delving deep into specialist topics,
practical solutions and ambitious actions. The virtual hub will be an opportunity to hear from political and
corporate leaders, the world’s youth, Indigenous and community leaders, local authorities and cutting-
edge thinkers, leaders, and practitioners. Each day will culminate in key messages to be issued by the
coalition of partners to live beyond the Hub on social media and to be fed into the Rio Conventions’ three
Convention negotiation processes.
OVERALL THEMES OF THE NATURE FOR LIFE HUB
This focus of this year’s Nature for Life Hub is on the transformations required to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals, and to bend the curve on biodiversity loss, climate change and nature-dependent

3OPENING SESSION
TRANSFORMATIVE ACTION FOR NATURE AND PEOPLE
For the opening session of the Nature for Life Hub and coinciding with the 76th United Nations General
Assembly, this high-level event Transformative Action for Nature and People, focuses on increasing
global ambition - for action on nature, on climate, on finance for nature and on finance and rights for
Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The event gather 22 presidents and prime ministers, as well
as Indigenous community leaders and leaders from the worlds of finance, philanthropy and civil society to
commit to momentous action for nature, climate and people. It also hosts the biggest-ever philanthropic
commitment to nature conservation, that campaigners see as crucial to unlock greater investments in
conservation, to plug the gap in funding to reverse global nature loss, and secure a nature-positive world.

TRANSFORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PLANET
This day highlights the urgent need to protect and restore nature, safeguard the rights of Indigenous
peoples, celebrate local action, and put nature at the heart of sustainable development, in order to build a
planetary safety net for humanity.
CREATING A GLOBAL SAFETY NET FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET
2022 should finally see the agreement by the world’s governments of a bold Biodiversity Framework
through 2030, with an eye toward a planet in harmony with nature by 2050. Building on the indivisible
relation between the wellbeing of people and the wellbeing of nature, this session will begin by looking at
the important transformations we need now to create a planetary safety net: protect and restore nature
for water, climate, health, wellbeing and livelihoods. The session will then dive into the solutions needed
to create a safety net for the planet, including increasing ambition on protected areas and on restoration,
and securing the rights of Indigenous Peoples. This will require bold political will, coherent and aligned
government policies, integration and alignment of a wide range of economic sectors, adequate resource
mobilization, and decisive action, among others. Finally, the session will look forward by analysing what
is at stake on the pathway towards a common agenda for nature and people.

TRANSFORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PLANET
PUTTING NATURE AT THE HEART OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
What is the Anthropocene and what are its implications for today’s development? The third session of the
Nature for Life Hub will start by analysing this question, drawing from the conclusions of the UNDP
Human Development Report, before exploring how the innovative use of new spatial datasets can
provide the tools to place nature at the heart of sustainable development. Spatial data from satellites,
combined with mapping of local and Indigenous knowledge on the ground and cutting-edge science, can
produce ‘maps of hope’ that identify where nature-based actions can safeguard essential life support
areas to maintain key biodiversity and essential ecosystem services. Weaving together videos, dynamic
demonstrations of new data and technologies, ministerial statements, and stories from the ground, this
session will journey through three critical questions: What are the challenges in putting nature at the heart
of development? What is the role of spatial data as an integrator in national development and for the new
Global Biodiversity Framework?; and Why are maps of hope fundamentally changing the way nations
approach sustainable development?

12DAY 2
TRANSFORMING PRODUCTION FROM THE GROUND UP
Transforming production and consumption: This day focuses on the need to rethink the way we produce,
trade and consume food, and identifies ways to transform food production systems.
TRANSFORMING FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
Our conventional food systems are broken – they are unsustainable for people and the planet. At our
current rate of depleting topsoil, humanity has fewer than sixty growing seasons left to produce enough
food for the world. We have greatly reduced the genetic and crop variety that are the basis of our food
systems. We have already lost three out of ever four crop varieties around the world in the past century,
and 60% of our calories come from just four crops – wheat, rice, maize and potatoes. The way we are
producing food is driving extinctions and accelerating climate breakdown. We know that we must
transform our food systems, but how should we operate this transition towards climate-resilient,
regenerative food systems and agricultural practices? In this session, we will explore four solutions that
point the way toward a more resilient, just, and nature-positive future for food. After reviewing the
importance of agrobiodiversity, agroforestry and regenerative agriculture, we will also highlight how those
practices have been deeply embedded in traditional and Indigenous food systems for centuries and
should be revitalized today.

TRANSFORMING PRODUCTION FROM THE GROUND UP
TRANSFORMING FOOD SYSTEMS FOR NATURE AND PEOPLE –
MAKING CHANGES HAPPEN
The ways we produce, process and consume food touches every aspect of life on this planet. However,
today’s food systems are fragile, unequal and unsustainable. Due to unsustainable agricultural practices
and models, critical natural ecosystems like forests, grasslands and savannahs are vanishing. In addition,
global support to agricultural producers totals half a trillion dollars but the current way this support is
provided has led to farming practices that are harmful to nature and health, thus working against
sustainable, equitable, and efficient food systems. We need to rethink our agricultural system, introduce
nature-positive and sustainable agricultural practices, eliminate deforestation from supply chains and
repurpose our subsidy systems to support our path towards healthier people and planet. Building on the
outcomes from the UN Food Systems Summit, this session will explore six solutions to spark change for
a just and sustainable transition of our food systems.

TRANSFORMING PRODUCTION FROM THE GROUND UP
SHIFTING THE BALANCE: PUTTING COMMUNITIES AT THE CENTER OF
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION
While local communities are the foundation of our global economy, they are often the most impacted by
unsustainable business practices and insufficient action to protect nature. At the same time, global
production and trade continue to trigger habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation, driving species to
extinction and destroying the livelihoods of communities who depend on ecosystems for their livelihoods.
Yet, indigenous people and local communities have the knowledge and ingenuity to transform the way we
produce our commodities, our food, our clothes, cosmetics, and to preserve and value nature. In this
session, we will start by illustrating how corporations can partner with IPLCs for more inclusive,
sustainable and resilient supply chains. We will then explore how creative new finance schemes and
enabling policy environment can catalyze the community-led micro, small, and medium enterprises
around the world to create a nature-positive economy - locally and globally. To close this session, nature-
positive community entrepreneurs will gather to share key aspects of their business models, the
challenges faced in our current societal model, and the solutions needed to expand similar initiatives and
make it the new normal.

18DAY 3
TOWARD A NATURE-POSITIVE FUTURE
This day focuses on the transformations required to align public and private finance with a nature-positive
future, and to undertake the transformations urgently needed now for a decade of action.
TRANSFORMING PRIVATE SECTOR FINANCE
By disrupting business-as-usual and promoting transparency in decision-making, business and finance
can invest in a new nature economy, reap long-term benefits and reduce their underlying risks associated
with nature loss. This session will strengthen the momentum achieved in collaboration with the Taskforce
on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), which launched in June 2021 with the aim to give
financial institutions and companies a complete picture of their environmental risks. In the second part of
the session, we will hear from the Science-based Target Network who will provide an outlook on how
science and standards should be put at the center of corporate and private sector decision making.
Finally, we will have an overview of a variety of private sector financial instruments that can help scale up
finance for nature. This session is a critical opportunity to draw on technical expertise from banks, data
providers, biodiversity experts and scientists on how better information can allow financial institutions and
companies to incorporate nature-related risks and opportunities into their decision-making processes.

TOWARD A NATURE-POSITIVE FUTURE
TRANSFORMING PUBLIC SECTOR FINANCE
Nature-based solutions outperform in terms of jobs, economic stimulus, and emission reductions. They
also provide habitats, support biodiversity, build natural resilience to climate change and generate public
health benefits. Yet, recent analyses show that they comprise only 1% of the EU National Resilience and
Recovery Plans. After decades of underinvestment and neglect, it is time to align public finance with a
nature-positive future. This session will highlight the urgent need to operate key transformations in public
sector finance, with a particular focus on rethinking nature-harmful subsidies and sovereign debt. After
showcasing the BIOFIN methodology, the session will dive into examples of nature-positive government
policies from different countries, and highlight a wide variety of public sector instruments to scale up
finance for nature. Finally, we will explore the opportunity of a green Covid-19 recovery at the business,
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
