2020 edition of the Hampton Area Visitor’s Guide
We are thrilled to share the natural beauty of the Hampton area
with all of you! This guide contains everything you wanted to know
about one of the best beaches in the country. Within this guide you
will find free activities, events, amenities, and the awards which
have made the New Hampshire Seacoast one of the most desirable
vacation destinations. This information is also made available on the John Nyhan, President

Hampton Beach is one of the most beautiful state parks in New of Commerce
Hampshire. We are blessed to be in an area that values a strong
sense of community and commitment to both the residents and visitors. It is an honor to
work alongside Town Officials, Hampton Beach Village District leaders, business owners,
volunteers, and residents to be able to successfully put on the free nightly concerts, weekly
and holiday fireworks, the Master Sand Sculpting Competition, the Children’s Festival,
free outdoor Monday night movies, the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, and many other
activities.
Through the programs and events offered, our goal is to provide opportunities for
everyone to get involved and connected. There are activities offered for people of all ages
and interests. From ice cream to fried dough, fast food to fine cuisine, arcades to mini golf -
Hampton Beach has something to offer for everyone.
We also offer a variety of seacoast hotels, motels, B&Bs and beach cottages to choose from
so you can stay as long as long as you want. When you arrive, please visit the Hampton Area

Our 2020 Hampton Area Visitor’s Guide Dedication
Late in 2019 we lost two icons that have worked at the Chamber for
many years.
Julie Leonard had a special connection to Hampton Beach where
she and her family vacationed at Hampton Beach for many summers.
She served as the Chamber’s Beach Office Manager for over twenty five
years and built many lifelong friendships with many visitors as well as
long term professional relationships with many of the seacoast business
Julie Leonard owners.
Lenny Joubert served the Chamber as the Craft Coordinator at the
Annual Hampton Beach Seafood Festival for over twenty eight years
and had a special relationship with crafters around New England which
brought them back year after year.
Therefore, the entire staff at the Chamber is dedicating this year’s
visitor’s guide to both special ladies. We will miss both very much and
never forget their unselfish commitment to the Hampton Area Chamber

from the Hampton Beach Village District
Welcome to another summer of free
entertainment! The residents and businesses of
the Hampton Beach Village District are proud
to sponsor another summer of free events. In
June we will be celebrating the 20th year of
the Annual Sand Sculpture Classic. We will
also continue to provide all of the bands on
the Seashell Stage and weekly fireworks. On
Monday nights we will again be sponsoring
the free movies on the beach with additional
sponsorship by the Boardwalk Café and JB’s. In July we will be bringing the Country
on the Coast Country Music event, and the Miss Hampton Beach Competitions.
We are the major sponsor of the Children’s Festival in August, and we will again be
bringing the Hampton Talent Competition to the Seashell Stage. We have added two
new events in September, the Circus over Labor Day weekend and The Fire show.
We would like to thank the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce for their assistance
and the New Hampshire State Parks for providing a venue for us to present our
events. Most of all, we would like to thank the taxpayers of the Hampton Beach Village
District for helping to finance all of the free summer events.

It began in 1899 with the
construction of a two-story wood-frame
building in the hopes that it would
draw people to the Hampton Beach
area. The building, which opened its
doors on July 15, 1899, was christened
the “Hampton Beach Casino.” At
that time, the word “casino” did not
connote a gambling establishment as
we understand it today. The word is
Italian for “summer house” and came
to describe a social gathering place,
a room or building where one could
dance, listen to music, and gamble.
When the Casino first opened to the public, it was comprised of a large dancing and
entertainment hall and also housed a spacious dining room, complete with a grand fireplace
erected with sea stones and lined with seashells. The bottom floor, had a dining room and
a cafe, boasted two bowling alleys, one billiard and two pool tables. The rear of the building
was reserved for recreational activities, namely baseball and tennis. Just across the street,
facing the Casino, was a bandstand for music entertainment such as bands and singers. That
bandstand would eventually become the Seashell Stage that we see today.
Like most Atlantic resorts, the Casino flourished during the industrial revolution.
Beginning in the first two weeks in July when the mills shut down, workers escaped their dark,
ten-hour work days and streamed to the shore for sunlight and fresh air. Running trolleys
made the resort accessible to those near and far. The droves grew larger with the automobile’s
advent, and by 1914, hundreds of Henry Ford’s inexpensive Model T’s were parked in front of
the Casino.
The Casino Ballroom’s popularity reached a new peak in the mid-1930’s big band era.
Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington all headlined
the ballroom. Though liquor was prohibited and the dress code strict - men rented ties for a
nickel - thousands crowded onto the dance floor to dance. Patrons lined a fence outside and
bought tickets or “checks”, usually five for a quarter that admitted them onto the dance floor.
The Casino Ballroom became one of the highest-grossing ballrooms in the country. Sammy
Kaye, Frankie Lane, the Dorsey Brothers, Bing Crosby and numerous other internationally
known orchestras filled the hall.
Though it is not yet classified as such, the Hampton Beach Casino is, to many, a historical
landmark. It has been and will continue to be
the heart of Hampton Beach. It has been the
center attraction at one of New England’s most
popular summer resorts for more than 100
years.
Today, the Ballroom enters into its third
century on a high note, reputed one of the
best venues to play by artists and one of the
best venues to see a show by fans. During
its extended eight month season (April -
November), the Ballroom continues to draw
some of the top names in entertainment.
Recently, the Ballroom placed in the top 30 for
worldwide ticket sales in venues under 3,000
seats. No doubt the Ballroom has come full
circle and is, once again, New Hampshire’s
premier entertainment facility. Come see for

Hampton Beach State Park
Hampton Beach State Park covers over four miles of the New Hampshire Seacoast. Within this
stretch of Atlantic coastline you will find three unique beaches to explore. Each one is slightly
different, and all offer something for everyone to enjoy.
North Beach
Located between High Street and a rocky point called
Great Boar’s Head, North Beach is the longest section of
the beaches. Hidden behind a high concrete surf barrier, it
almost vanishes at high tide and becomes a fine sandy plain
at low tide. This is the place to come to catch some tasty
waves if you want to surf, try surf fishing, or take a walk and
watch the action from the heights of the wall.
Center Beach
This is the heart and soul of Hampton Beach,
extending from Church Street down to Haverhill
Avenue. A wide, clean, sandy beach with pristine
water is ready to greet you this summer, with events,
tax free shopping, restaurants, arcades, and so much
more.
South Beach
Tucked between Epping Avenue and the mouth of Hampton Harbor is South Beach and the State RV Park.
This quiet corner is ideal for those who want to camp out, or need a place for a large get together.
There are six State Park beaches
alongthe NH seacoast.
The NH State Beaches are a great family location with an
Atlantic ocean-front setting—the sandy beach is ideal for
swimming and picnicking. Amenities at the beach include

At Odiorne Point State Park picnickers can enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and rocky shore, and
explorers can uncover evidence of past military occupation. An extensive network of trails wind through
the dense vegetation and traverse the park. The Seacoast Science Center, which is located in the park, has
exhibits relating to the natural and human history of Odiorne
and the seacoast area (separate fee). The Seacoast Science
Center will be providing free programming this summer for
parks guests
