PARENT HANDBOOK 2021 - St John's Anglican College
From the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome to your child’s schooling at St John’s Anglican College. Our College supports students as they
make their transition from child to young adult – continuing to build confidence, skills and ability before
they branch out into the pathways offered in Senior School (Years 10 to 12) and through to graduation.

We recognise that academic progress depends on students feeling emotionally and socially connected.
Our specialist learning and pastoral programs aim to engage each student in learning while challenging
them to grow.

The International Baccalaureate Program for the Primary Years adds value to the Australian Curriculum
offering a world-class education and opportunities for all students from Kindergarten to Year 12 that will
prepare our students for life and work in a global world. Most importantly the program assists teachers
to add ‘inquiry-based teaching strategies’ into their repertoire which focus on collaboration and
teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving.

At St John’s we value partnerships with parents in their children’s education. When school and home
values are in harmony and there is cooperation between the two, students reap the benefits. We
encourage you as parents to participate in your child’s educational journey and through our community
networks, we will support your child in their transition from school to university and beyond.

Welcome to the St John’s community and we look forward to sharing this journey with you and your
family.

Kind regards,

Mrs Maria McIvor
Principal

                                                                            Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 2 of 28

Hope Fostering a positive, safe, optimistic and empowering environment
Love Demonstrating co-operation, encouragement and compassion
Courage Developing resilience, effort and determination to succeed
Community Respect, tolerance and working in service to others
Justice Inclusively, equity, diversity and care for the environment

Student Protection
Your child has the right to feel safe at all times including while they are a student at St John’s. Protection
for children and young people is of paramount importance in Anglican Church schools. St John’s has
policies and procedures which assist us in providing a safe environment for all students and members of
our community. The College has nominated the following staff members as Student Protection Officers:

Mr Martin Brownlow
Mrs Robern Hinchliffe
Mr Braydon Giles

We encourage all students to talk to a trusted adult, one of our Student Protection Officers, College
Psychologist, or Mrs McIvor about any concerns that they may have for their safety or the safety of
another student.

                                                                              Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 3 of 28

Junior School Access

The main entrance and exit point to the Junior School is via Alpine Place. Parking is at a premium in and
around Alpine Place at peak arrival and departure times therefore, parents/guardians are encouraged to
consider the following options:

Parking in Alpine Place
Thirty-minute parking bays are located immediately in front of the College in Alpine Place. While these
may be accessed during non-peak times, parents should not depend on their availability during peak arrival
and departure times.
The area between the roundabout and Forest Lake Boulevard is a designated pick-up and drop-off zone at
peak times. Please refer to Brisbane City Council (BCC) signage for details of parking. It is an offence to
park in this zone other than to pick-up or drop-off at peak times.

Parking in Nearby Streets
Parking in residential streets near the College is another option. If parents choose this option, they are
encouraged to show consideration to residents who live in these streets and must refer to BCC signage at
all times to locate appropriate parking locations. Double parking or parking on pathways or in driveways
must be avoided. A large car park is available in Woogaroo Street.

Kiss ‘n’ Drive
The Kiss ‘n’ Drive zone located in Alpine Place in front of the College provides an alternative to parking
when dropping off or picking up children and operates between the hours of 8.00am – 8.30am and 3.00pm
– 3.30pm. Of the options available, this is the one recommended by the College. Kindergarten and Prep
students should be personally escorted directly to the classroom staff or supervised area by parents each
morning, therefore Kiss ‘n’ Drive should not be used for students in these years. A request to alter this
procedure needs to be made in writing to the Head of Junior School.
Parents should note that there are three rules to observe when using Kiss ‘n’ Drive:
    • You must remain in your vehicle
    • Your engine must remain on
    • You may stop for two minutes only

The Kiss ‘n’ Drive zone is located between the College driveway and Forest Lake Community House. A
queuing zone exists between the roundabout and the College driveway. Students may not enter or alight
from vehicles in this area. This area enables parents to ready students for a quick departure when awaiting
access to the Kiss ‘n’ Drive area. Please note, traffic regulations require drivers to NOT queue on the
roundabout which must be kept clear at all times.
Parents are obliged to exit the Kiss ‘n’ Drive zone after two minutes, whether children have been picked
up or not. If students are not ready for collection, parents must exit the zone and return a few minutes
later.

Staggered Afternoon Collection Times
Kindergarten students are dismissed at 3.00pm and parents picking up Kindergarten students must display
the parking card included in the Kindergarten Orientation pack to gain access to the designated
Kindergarten parking areas.
Prep to Year 2 students are dismissed at 3.00pm and can be picked up from that time.

                                                                           Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 7 of 28
Year 3 to 6 students are dismissed at 3.10pm and will not arrive at Kiss ’n’ Drive before 3.15pm. Parents
of Year 3 to 6 students arriving prior to 3.15pm will be asked to exit the Kiss ’n’ Drive zone.
The College has provided supervision for students until 3.30pm, so that parents may stagger afternoon
collection times. When using Kiss ‘n’ Drive, a slightly later collection time (3.15-3.30pm) may assist to
relieve traffic congestion, which often peaks around 3.00-3.15pm. After 3.30pm, children still waiting to
be collected are taken to After and Before College Care (ABCC).

Students who are travelling on the College bus are collected/meet in the undercroft (near the oval) and
are escorted to the bus stop and supervised until the students leave.

Parking in Junior School Grounds
Parking is NOT available in the College grounds except with the written permission of the Head of Junior
School. Use of the staff car park, or access through that area by students, is strictly prohibited as it can
compromise student safety.
Please refer to the Transit Options booklet for details about transport by bus.

Middle and Senior School Access
Parking is available on the campus with both the entry and exit point via the lower entrance of the car park
off College Avenue. No general access is permitted via the upper (roundabout) entry. Drivers of students
with a disabled permit are the only exception.
Street parking is available along College Avenue (except in bus zones during designated times). Parents
are requested to exercise care, patience and common sense when driving in the College precinct. Student
parking is available at the bottom of the College car park.
The College Avenue set down and collection bay, (located adjacent to the car park) is to be used for
dropping off and picking up students only and parents are asked to observe the following rules:
    • Do not drop students off in the bus zone
    • Do not park in the no-parking zone opposite the main entrance of the College on College Avenue

Students crossing College Avenue to access the Middle and Senior School must use the signed Safety Zones
to cross the road.

Rules for Student Drivers
Students must apply for a parking permit at student reception if they are wanting to use the College car
park. A permit will be issued and must be kept in full view in their car at all times.
Compliance is expected of all rules and regulations of St John’s Anglican College. Violations may result in
the loss of driving privileges including permission to park on the College grounds.
    1. Students will park at the lower end of the College car park
    2. A parking permit will be displayed on the dashboard of the car
    3. The student will not operate a vehicle in such a way that will endanger others, self or property
    4. A 5km per hour speed limit will be observed at all times
    5. Entry to and exit from the car park is via the lower entry/exit on College Avenue
    6. Students will not arrive on the College grounds prior to 7.30am unless a supervised activity has
       been scheduled
    7. Upon arrival students will park their car in the allocated area and immediately enter the College
       grounds

                                                                            Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 8 of 28
8. At no time during the day will loitering be allowed in or around the car park and/or vehicles
    9. The student will not be allowed in the car or car park during school hours unless permission is
granted from a member of the administration
    10. The student must possess a valid driver’s license
    11. Students must obey both the St John’s Anglican College driving rules and the Queensland State
        driving laws
    12. No other students are permitted to travel in the car except siblings or homestay students

Travel by Car
All children travelling by car should wear the full College uniform and utilise safety belts. Parents are urged
to set strict behaviour guidelines for their child at arrival and departure times in the interests of safety.

Travel on Foot or by Bicycle
Students who ride pushbikes to the College must dismount before entering the College grounds. Bike racks
are provided, and it is recommended that all bikes be secured to the rack by a lock and chain. All students
travelling by pushbike must wear safety helmets and make alternative arrangements to have dress hats
at the College for wear on Campus.
Please note, under no circumstances may students in College uniform wear roller blades or ride a scooter
to the College.

                                                                              Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 9 of 28
Crossing the Road
Students should exercise care, courtesy and common sense when crossing roads in the vicinity of the
College. Students should cross College Avenue at designated points only and those on pushbikes must
dismount before crossing at these points.

College Receptions
The College Receptions located at both the Junior and Middle/Senior Schools operate for 50 weeks of the
year. Office hours are from 8.00am until 4.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Appointments
Should you require an interview or appointment with a key staff member please refer to the listing at the
front of this booklet. All appointments should be made by emailing or telephoning in advance.
Parents are encouraged to seek an interview with teachers throughout the year should they wish to discuss
their child’s progress. It is important that parents seek an appointment to speak with teaching staff, rather
than just ‘popping in’. The times just before and after class are devoted to important preparation for the
College day, and discussion of student issues requires a more formal time be set aside.
Parents are encouraged to communicate with teachers using email, message books (Kindergarten), or the
student diaries (for students in Years 3 to 12).
The College strongly encourages the use of email, therefore, it is important for parents to keep their
email address up to date. This can be done via your My St John’s account/Parent Lounge.

Phone Messages
Parents are requested to refrain from requesting that phone messages be relayed to students except in
cases of emergency. Only urgent messages will be attempted to be relayed to students. Parents are
requested to ensure all personal and transport arrangements are clearly defined before the student arrives
at the College. The College cannot guarantee that messages left after 2.30pm will reach the student.

Student Attendance
Students enrolled in Prep to Year 12 must attend the College every day unless absent for medical reasons
or another acceptable reason. This is a legal requirement, imposed by state legislation. Students should
not leave the College grounds once they have arrived. All areas outside the College grounds including
McDonald’s and the Forest Lake Village are out of bounds.

Absence from The College
Parents are asked to notify the College of a student absence, and the reason for it, via telephone by 8.30am
on any day on which the student will be absent. On the student’s return, a written note to the Home Group
teacher should be provided. A text will be sent to parents of students who are absent from the College if
no communication has been received from parents.
It is expected that families will take holidays within the designated College breaks so that learning in term
time will not be disrupted. Families planning extended absences during term time should write a letter to
the Principal or Head of Junior School advising the nature and length of the absence and seeking
permission for the student to be absent for that period of time. Permission is not granted automatically,
as each case will be considered on its merits.

                                                                            Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 10 of 28
Year 10, 11 and 12 students will not be granted leave of absences during the dates below. These dates
correspond with the major assessment periods for 2021 and are created on advice from the Queensland
Curriculum and Assessment Authority and no provision will be allowed for students who are absent for
holiday reasons during these times. Should a family opt to withdraw their student from attendance during
any of the listed assessment periods, the student will not receive a credit for the assessment item.
It is strongly recommended that families with students in Years 10, 11 and 12 consider these dates when
planning for 2021.

     2021 Year 10 Year 11 Year 12

Late Arrival
Junior School
Students who are late to the College should report immediately to Reception to sign in and receive a late
slip for their teacher. Students who are consistently late can expect to be questioned and asked to bring
evidence from a parent/guardian demonstrating reasons for their lateness.

Middle/Senior School
Students who arrive after the commencement of Lesson 1 must provide a note or parents must phone the
College advising of the late arrival. Students must also sign the late book at the Student Reception Window
noting the date, time of arrival, the reason for lateness (e.g. transport, appointment), and then report
directly to class.

Leaving the College Grounds
No student is permitted to leave the College grounds during the day without permission from a member
of the College Administration. When a student has to leave the College grounds during the day, a note
specifying the request is required from a parent/guardian.

Daily Routine
Students should arrive at College from 8.00am onwards and report to the supervised areas. Students who
arrive at the College before that time must be booked into After and Before College Care (ABCC). Prep
students should be personally escorted directly to the Prep supervised area by parents each morning.
Students should be collected from the College between 3.00pm and 3.30pm. Students who have not been
collected by this time will be directed to ABCC and parents may collect them from there.
Parents will appreciate that these measures are designed to ensure that all students are supervised at all

Students will be assigned to a Home Group class. The Home Group teacher will attend to their pastoral
care and support needs in consultation with the Head of House.
Each afternoon, students are required to report to their Home Group teacher so that attendances can be
checked, rooms tidied, and departure noted on the roll. Students should arrive at the College after 8.00am
and leave the College by 3.30pm unless they are involved in approved College activities outside these
hours.
Students are not permitted to use the Forest Lake Village Shopping Centre or McDonald’s as an interim
stop between home and the College.

Chapels and Assemblies

Junior School
Students assemble in two ways:
    • Friday - 8.45am - Prep to Year 2 Chapel and Assembly
    • Friday - 1.50pm - Years 3 to 6 Chapel followed by an Assembly or House Meeting
Chapel Services and assemblies are held in the Living Faith Chapel. Parents, family members and friends
of the College are most welcome to attend. Friday Chapel Services are hosted by classes on a rostered
basis. This is a special time and one that many parents enjoy. The Chapel roster is published each
semester.

Middle/Senior Schools
The Middle and Senior School student bodies gather every Wednesday and every Friday for either year
level or whole school assemblies and Chapel Services.
At Assembly and Chapel, students wear full dress uniform. The gatherings are held in our Performing Arts
Centre of Excellence and parents and friends of the College are most welcome to attend.

Student Health and Wellbeing
The safety and wellbeing of students is the College’s primary concern. The College has a Health and Safety
Committee, which oversees matters pertaining to the health and safety of students, staff and the College
community. If you have a concern about a safety issue, please contact the College immediately through
the Head of Junior School for students in Kindergarten to Year 6 or the Deputy Principal (Pastoral Care) for
students in Years 7 to 12.

Evacuation, Lock Down and Storm Warning Procedures
The College has documented evacuation procedures, lockdown and storm warning procedures for use in
cases of specific emergencies. Regular ‘evacuation drills’ and ‘lockdown drills’ are held so that all students
and staff are fully acquainted with these procedures and the purposes for which they are used.
All parents/guardians and visitors who are on campus during an evacuation (drill or otherwise) must
evacuate to the oval collection point to await clearance or further instructions.

Accident or Illness Procedure
Students who are unwell will be sent to the supervised College Sick Bay. Should it be determined that the
student is not well enough to return to class within a short time, parents will be contacted and requested
to collect them from the College. In case of accidental injury, first aid will be administered, and parents/
guardians contacted if the matter is serious.
If parents cannot be contacted, persons listed as Emergency Contacts will be telephoned. Where the
illness or injury is deemed to be serious, the designated medical practitioner and/or the Queensland
Ambulance Service may be contacted.
It is essential that parents update any change in contact numbers or those of the student’s emergency
contacts or medical practitioner via their My St John’s account.

Student Attendance when Unwell
Any child who is unwell should not be sent to the College. If a student has any condition that may be
infectious to other students, he/she should remain at home until the danger to other students has passed.

                                                                            Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 13 of 28
A list of infectious diseases and the period for which students should remain at home is available from the
College Receptions. Presence of a fever is an indication of infection that can be transmitted to fellow
classmates and their siblings. It is therefore in the interests of all families that children who are unwell are
kept at home.

Medications
If a student requires prescription medication at the College, it should be handed to the relevant Reception
with written permission and instructions from a registered medical practitioner or pharmacist for its
administration by the College staff. Teachers at the Junior Campus will direct students to Reception so that
medication can be stored and administered from that point. A record will be kept of times and quantity of
medication administered. A Medication Administration form must be obtained from the College for this
purpose. Students at the Middle/Senior Campus must also have their medication stored by Reception staff
at Sick Bay.

Administration of Non-Prescription Medication
In line with Queensland Health regulations, College staff are not authorised to administer non-
prescription medication without written instruction from a medical practitioner. Therefore, the only
circumstances in which non-prescription medication (including Panadol, Aspirin and other painkillers) will
be administered by the College is with written instruction from the student’s medical practitioner.
Students are not permitted to bring non-prescription medication to College for self-administration.
Students who do so will be subject to the College’s Discipline Procedures.

Religious and Values Education
St John’s Anglican College takes the faith and spiritual development of our students very seriously. Each
week every student from Prep to Year 12 is engaged in a variety of experiences with a spiritual dimension.
One period every week is set aside for Religious and Values Education.
Every week there are Chapel Services at both campuses, with significant input from students and teachers.
These provide a regular opportunity for the College community to celebrate our life as a Christian learning
community and to express that in worship. Parents are most welcome to join us for these services, details
of which are provided in the Chapel and Assemblies section of this booklet.
Every aspect of our life together at the College is expected to reflect Gospel values, and our teachers are
always ready to address the religious dimensions of other subjects. From Art to Technology workshops,
there is no area of study and learning where faith questions are out of bounds.
Opportunities for students to explore their faith and express God’s compassion in service to others are
continually being developed at the College. More details of these groups will be available at the start of

                                                                              Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 14 of 28
the semester. Please feel free to contact the College Chaplain at any time with any queries or concerns
you have about your child’s spiritual development.

Drama

Drama is taught from Kindergarten to Year 8 and may be taken as an elective subject from Year 9 onwards.
Students may choose to participate in Verse-Speaking Choirs and Drama groups as an extra activity. Full
details of the Drama program will be available at the commencement of the College year.
Students are encouraged to be involved in the Junior Drama Club or the Middle/Senior Drama Troupe and
the biennial College Musical.

Physical Education
The College’s Physical Education (PE) and Sporting programs work in unison to provide the best
opportunities possible for students to build self-esteem and find success in the given activity. We also aim
to foster in students a love of physical activity and maximise opportunities for them to excel. Both
programs support and provide developmentally appropriate activities for students in all year levels. A high
emphasis is placed on skill development, leadership, knowledge and understanding, application in a game,
and participation.
Students must bring a note from a parent/guardian if they are unable to participate in PE or sport. It is
expected all students will change into their PE uniform for PE whether they are taking part or not as they
may fulfil many roles from performer, coach, teacher and umpire in lessons. These notes are kept on file.
A medical condition is usually the only acceptable reason for not participating. Students out of appropriate
uniform will perform other duties.

Sport

The St John’s sporting program is a key component of our College’s holistic, balanced approach to
education. Through regular high-quality sporting competition against like-minded independent schools,
your child will develop the human attributes necessary for their future including teamwork, reliability,
responsibility, self-discipline and leadership. These skills provide the foundation for success in all
educational endeavours.
The Supporters of Sports (SOS) is a sub group of the Parents and Friends Association and is dedicated to
assisting St John’s sports through fundraising for student resources and enhancing facilities. They also run
the Kiosk at home games. Parent involvement is greatly appreciated and is an ideal way to meet other
families.

Junior TAS Sport
Kindergarten to Year 3
Sporting opportunities for students in these years aims to develop their fitness, coordination, and sport-
specific and non-sport specific motor skills. The program includes mini-games and a perceptual-motor
program. In addition, Kindy to Year 3 students are involved in modified versions of the Athletics and Cross
Country Carnivals.

Co-Curricular Activities
St John’s Anglican College prides itself on the breadth and quality of its co-curricular programs in the
cultural and sporting arenas.

Instrumental Music
All students at St John’s have the opportunity to study a band or orchestral instrument within the College’s
Instrumental Music Program. For students in Years 3 to 7 this is compulsory and students in Years 8 to 12
may select Instrumental Music as an elective subject. Small group lessons are timetabled on a weekly
rotation and the College employs some of the finest professional musicians and teachers in Queensland
to ensure that the tuition is the best available.
Students are expected to practice regularly and maintain a practice register. The amount of practice
required will depend on the age of the student and expectations in this area will be communicated clearly

                                                                            Parent Handbook 2021 | Page 17 of 28
to students and parents at the beginning of the year. Also, it is expected that students will take good care
of their instrument.
The College has a number of performance bands and choirs. In keeping with the College’s commitment to
full participation in the music program, a number of beginner bands and choirs have been formed. Any
student wishing to join a musical ensemble may do so.
Students can elect to prepare for AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) grade exams if they wish
and the College enjoys an enviable reputation for success in this area. Instrument hire is also available at
no additional cost, until Year 8. Instruments available include:
    • Violin • Trumpet

College House System
There are four Houses at St John’s Anglican College that are unique to the College and reflect its origins.
Each House is allocated a colour and Chinese character.

Archerfield House takes its name from Archerfield Station which
was the land on which Forest Lake is built. The site of the original
Archerfield House, built in 1878, is at Homestead Park, Homestead
                                     Way, Forest Lake.

                                     House colour – Dark Blue

Delbeta House takes its name from the original developers of the
suburb of Forest Lake – Delfin property Group and B+B Australia.

                                     House colour – Dark Green

Braithwaite House takes its name from Mr John Braithwaite founding
member of the Board of Directors.

                                       House colour – Red

Bow Qing Tian House reflects our commitment to Mandarin
Chinese. Bow Qing Tian was known as the greatest and wisest
                                       judge according to Chinese legend.

                                       House colour – Light Blue

Students are allocated to a House soon after enrolment. All students in the same family are allocated to
the same House where possible. Athletics, Cross-Country and Swimming Carnivals, as well as competition
in cultural areas such as debating, music and service initiatives, are examples of events in the College
calendar where students have the opportunity to represent their House.
Students are notified of their House allocation when purchasing their uniform so that a House badge and
House shirt (Years 6 to 12 only) can be purchased.

                                                                           Parent Handbook 2020 | Page 19 of 28
Laptop Program

All students in Years 4 to 12 will be issued with a College laptop. Students are responsible for the care
and security of their College laptop at all times.
It is expected that:
    • The laptop should be secured in the student’s classroom or locked locker when not in use
    • The laptop should never be taken to the PE change rooms or left unattended

Full details of the laptop program are in the Laptop Information Handbook which is available on My St
John’s.

Library | Information Resource Centre
Junior
Students have one library lesson each week. The Junior Information and Resouce Centre is open in the
morning before school and at lunchtime for student borrowing, quiet reading and participation in Maker
Space activities.
Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 may borrow one book at a time. This is usually changed on a weekly
basis during library lesson time. Students in Years 3 to 6 may borrow two books at a time, for a two-week
period.

Middle/Senior
The Information Resource Centre (IRC) is open daily between 7.30am and 5.00pm. Students are welcome
to visit before and after school or during breaks to borrow or for quiet study. Photocopying facilities are
also available. Students are permitted to borrow four resources at a time, for a two-week period.
Students can also get all their laptop support needs through the Student Laptop Window located in the
IRC. Everything from damaged or faulty equipment to forgotten passwords is handled here.

Lunches
Students are encouraged to bring nutritious and filling food to the College for morning tea and lunch.
Those students who forget their lunch may go to Reception, where they will be issued with a meal voucher.
On presentation of this meal voucher, the student will receive a basic meal at each break. Parents will be
notified of the cost and requested to reimburse. Students will not be permitted to use College telephones
to call home to ask for lunches that have been forgotten.
Please note, due to the presence of a number of students with serious allergies we ask that all nut
products are excluded from lunch boxes.

Supervision
The College takes seriously its duty to supervise all children at all times. There is a very high level of staff
supervision during morning tea, lunch breaks, and at departure times. At the Junior School, supervision is
provided in eating areas, on the oval, near the tuckshop, beside the play equipment and in the Meadow.
This ensures that there is always a staff member that students can turn to in case of emergency.
A similarly high level of supervision is maintained at the Middle/Senior School where staff supervise all
eating areas and areas where students assemble.

                                                                              Parent Handbook 2020 | Page 20 of 28
Tuckshop and College Canteen

Junior School
The Junior School tuckshop operates from Tuesday to Friday each week and offers nutritious food for
morning tea and lunch, as well as snacks, drinks and ice blocks. Morning tea and lunch must be pre-ordered
via our online ordering system.

Online Ordering System – Junior School Only
Online orders are placed through Flexischools and parents are encouraged to visit the Flexischools website,
flexischools.com.au to register. Access to Flexischools can also be made via the St John’s My App or your
My St John’s account.
Registering involves parents creating an account into which they top-up funds to pay for tuckshop items.
They also need to add their child’s name and year level. Once registered, families are able to order meals.
Separate orders need to be made for morning tea and lunch and for each child. Everything is completed
online without the need for students to bring anything to Campus.
Tuckshop online ordering closes at 9.00am each day and no other orders can be processed after that time.
Flexischools prepares labels with students’ names and meals ordered, according to what families have
submitted. The tuckshop staff print the labels and adhere them to the bags containing the ordered items
and these are distributed to the students at morning tea and lunch.
Students who have an ice block or slushy ordered will take their labelled bag to the tuckshop to collect the
ordered item.
If you have any questions, please contact Flexischools Help Line which is open 7.00am – 6.00pm, Monday
to Friday: Ph 1300 361 769 or email help@flexischools.com.au.

Middle and Senior School
The full facilities of the College Canteen are available five days per week – Monday to Friday. The
canteen offers nutritious food for breakfast, morning tea and lunch on these days, as well as snacks,
drinks, and ice blocks, and the weekly ‘specials’ have proved extremely popular. Food will be served
cafeteria-style, in keeping with the young adult clientele.

Cashless Canteen
Flexischools cashless card system links a students’ existing school ID card to their Flexischools account,
allowing them to purchase securely on the school grounds without the need for cash.
    • Parents set up a Flexischools account online and pre-load the account with funds
    • Middle and Senior School students can make purchases at the canteen by scanning their ID card
        at the cash register
    • On-screen photo ID security protects your account from lost or stolen cards
    • Parents can view their child’s purchases online and set a daily spending limit

Please visit your My St John’s account for information on registering and setting up FlexiSchools for your
child.

ID Cards

All students in Years 7 to 12 are issued with student ID Cards. The cards, which contain an identifying
photograph, are used by students to borrow library books, student printing (paid for through Flexischools),
pay for items purchased at the College canteen and to access student fares on public transport.
Students are issued with a card at the commencement of the academic year. Cards which are lost or
damaged must be replaced at the students’ own cost.
Students must carry their ID cards at all times. ID cards can be kept in the students’ pockets or purses/
wallets; clips are available for those students wishing to wear their card.

Lockers
Middle/Senior School
    • All students in Middle and Senior School are assigned a locker and issued with a combination
        padlock
    • Students do not have tidy trays or desks where their books can be stored
    • Students are required to take all their requirements for each session
    • For some students, developing these organisational skills can be quite a challenge
    • All students are issued with a locker in which to store valuable items, books and equipment
throughout the school day however laptops are not to be left in lockers overnight
    • Students are allocated a locker within close proximity to their classrooms and are issued with a
        combination lock
All combinations are kept on record at the College and we have a universal key when needed.

Middle and Senior Student Window
Located on the bottom floor of the Administration Building, the student window serves as a central place
for Middle and Senior School students to report when they have questions or concerns. Students can use
the staff in the student window to help find their class, lost property etc.
Students must carry their ID cards at all times. ID cards can be kept in the students’ pockets or purses/
wallets; clips are available for those students wishing to wear their card.

Academic Reports

Two formal reports on student progress are provided to families during the year. These occur at the end
of each semester for students in Prep to Year 9. Due to the changes brought about by the new ATAR
system, students in Years 10 to 12 now receive their End of Academic Year report at the end of
Term Three. Please note, for students in Years 10 to 12, the teacher will contact parents if student
progress varies significantly during the remainder of Term Four.

Student academic reports will be available online in the Parent Portal via your My St John’s account.
Families will be advised when they are uploaded. Parent/teacher interviews are conducted following the
issue of reports. Interim or progress reports are also provided at the end of Term One and Term Three
for students in Prep to Year 9.
