Children should see and hear themselves in the
books they read. During our Read Across
America week each year we work hard to
ensure that our O'otham students get to enjoy
                                  stories written, by Community members,
                                  including our wonderful Community authored
Developing Readers series. We also focus on
books by Native American authors from across
the United States and Canada. Children will
receive books to keep (our goal is every child
owns 100 books by the end of 5th grade) and
get to meet authors virtually and, fingers

Counselor's Corner
Hello!

We, the counselors at CBCS, would
like to share with you what students
will be learning in our Social and
Emotional Learning (SEL) classes
this month.

Career Awareness:
The Career Awareness SEL for third-
fifth grade helps students
understand how their academic
achievement in grade school and
high school will affect their career
goals and choices in the future.
Students will learn how their
interests, values and hobbies can
lead them into various career fields.
They will explore various
occupations and careers including
less traditional ones. Students will
also explore various career paths
after high school such as college,
trade school and careers in the
military.

Problem Solving:
Kindergarten - 2nd grade students
will finish the Safety Lessons and
then begin lessons on Problem
Solving. They will learn the Problem-
Solving Steps of: 1. Stop and Say
the Problem 2. Think of Solutions
3. Explore Consequences 4. Pick the
Best one.
                                        Monthly Affirmation:
If anyone has questions regarding
counseling at the school or the My thoughts
lessons we teach, please don’t
hesitate to contact us.
                                        become my reality

READ
      ACROSS
      AMERICA
Read Across America is a national
 reading motivation and awareness
program that calls for every child in
     every community to celebrate
reading with this theme in school
year 2023: Celebrating a Nation of
    Diverse Readers. At Casa Blanca
     Community School (CBCS) we
believe in the power of books to
   build identity and resilience. We
celebrate Native American Read S.D Nelson
     Across America by celebrating
Indigenous authors and illustrators
          focusing on stories of
     contemporary life. Across the
     Community, everyone can get
      involved in bringing reading
excitement to children of all ages. It
is our goal to make our community
      the place where Read Across
 America is on everyone's calendar.
When people take time to read,
     children get the message that
  reading is particularly important.
Parents, educators, and members of
our Community who take time to
read and celebrate Read Across Daniel Vandever
