Native American Tribes
Aroostook County is home to two federally recognized Native
American tribes, the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and Houlton Band
of Maliseets. The Micmac tribal government is located in Presque
Isle while the Maliseets are located in Houlton respectively. Both
tribes display their heritage through their crafts, museums, local farms
and regional markets. Visit maliseets.com or micmac-nsn.gov
French Acadians
The first settlers to come to this region, the French Acadians settled
on the banks of the St. John River near today’s Madawaska. Maine
Acadians possess a strong sense of who they are. They express what it
means to be a Maine Acadian in diverse ways, depending on the situation
and whether they are acting as individuals, families, communities,
organizations, or in other groups. Contemporary Maine Acadians use at
least three terms to name their ethnicity. “French” is widely used for self-
identification and to differentiate themselves from other cultural groups.
Irish & Scotch Irish
Beginning in the early 1700s, the Irish and Scotch Irish began
immigrating to North America establishing some of their first permanent
settlements in the State of Maine. In fact, it was these people who
first introduced the practice of farming potatoes to the state, a major
economic driver for Aroostook County for well over a century.

Snowmobile Trails
of Aroostook County
One factor to consider when trying to
decide on a snowmobiling destination is
density. Areas that have a limited trail
system and high user numbers tend to
have traffic-related issues. Trails in those
areas get beaten up. Aroostook County
has an incredibly diverse and extensive
system, coupled with comparatively
low usage allowing the trails to stay in
better condition longer. This means
you can ride farther with less fatigue.
That’s a winning combination.

Most recently, wild turkeys have made a comeback in Maine, and wild turkeys are making their Federal Firearms

18 Aroostook County Visitor Guide © visitaroostook.comFishing in The County
Warm Weather or Cold.
Aroostook County contains countless ponds and miles
of free flowing water that contain wild and/or native brook
trout. The warm water anglers will find smallmouth bass
plentiful in East Grand Lake as well as Mattawamkeag Lake
and Pleasant Pond and several other lakes in southern and
Central Aroostook. Cold water fishery anglers will find some
of the best salmon and trout fishing available in the Eastern
U.S. For the angler looking for a new and exciting experience,
the St. John River and Tributaries offer the only wild muskie
fishery in the Eastern U.S. Long Lake, part of the Fish River
Chain of Lakes, was voted one of the top 10 “must fish
destinations for landlocked salmon” by a national magazine
in 2007. Deboullie Pond gave up the new State Record Blue
Back Trout (Land Locked Artic Char) in 2008.
The Fish River Chain of Lakes
The Fish River Chain of Lakes management region located in the
“Crown of Maine” has long been famous for traditional coldwater species.
The Fish River Lakes management region is 1 1/3 the size of the state
of Connecticut. Prior planning should include maps showing all of the
updated road systems particularly in the North Maine Woods, Inc. area
west of Ashland. Summer visitors to this vast area of private woodlands
must pass through a North Maine Woods gate. Information on fee
schedules may be obtained by calling their Ashland office at:
207-435-6213. These gates do not operate in the winter fishing season.
Speaking of the winter season, one should consider the Fish River Lakes
management region for their ice fishing destination. Snow and ice comes
early and stays late in this part of the state. Numerous snowmobile trails
afford excellent opportunity to access lakes for fishing trips, or, if the fish
aren’t biting, to enjoy the beautiful scenery in northern Maine.
Anglers are encouraged to contact the regional fisheries biologists at (207) 435-3231 for additional information on the lakes in this region.

in Aroostook County
Aroostook is the ideal destination to tour some of the best scenic and
uncrowded roads in Maine and to check yourself in at one of the four corners
of the United States. Located in downtown Madawaska, the Four Corners
Park was created to honor those hearty souls who saddle their motorcycles
for a grueling cross-country trek to the outermost reaches of the continental
United States. As the Southern California Motorcycle Association’s primary
challenge to long-distance bikers, the Four Corners Tour requires each
candidate to travel by motorcycle to the four corners of the U.S in 21 days
or less with Madawaska representing the most northeastern aspect (while
Blaine in Washington, San Ysidro in California and Key West in Florida
serve as the other three points--though none other with benefit of a park.)

Aroostook County Visitor Guide © visitaroostook.com 21Agriculture
of Aroostook County
Ten percent of Aroostook County is tillable farmland and when you consider that the County is larger
than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, you understand how important agriculture is to the
region. The primary crop continues to be the potato, however broccoli, canola and grains are all planted
in large amounts annually, resulting in some of the most beautiful patchwork landscapes you will ever see.
If you see someone working a farm stop and say “Hi,” you won’t believe how friendly the people are.
In the fall you can see some fields being harvested by the most modern equipment available and other
fields harvested using horse drawn equipment. Can you imagine a place that the public school systems
close each fall so the children can work in the potato harvest? You don’t have to, it happens right here.
