(RFCx) creates acoustic monitoring systems for those who wish to end SAP Cloud Platform
illegal deforestation in real-time. The earlier rangers are informed, the
better they will succeed to halt illegal logging.

With predictive analysis RFCx can now predict 3 minutes ahead when and
where a chainsaw event is likely to happen. A mobile app alerts rangers so Predictive Analysis
that they can show up before loggers can even begin.
SAP Analytics Cloud
The prediction is based on historic sounds, captured by old smartphones,
that stream the rainforest sounds to a machine learning model to detect
these events.

Rainforest Connection (RFCx) creates acoustic monitoring systems for those who
wish to end illegal deforestation in real-time.
According to the UN 50 to 90% of logging in rainforests is illegal1. Deforestation
accounts for 17% of all global carbon emissions2 and by that the 2nd largest
contributor. Saving rainforests is the key to saving our planet. We are dedicated to
putting conservation technologies into the hands of committed partners on-the-
ground to help combat.

Solution Overview
Illegal logging has a huge impact on our environment. Currently rangers are
alarmed once loggers already started, but we need to get to them before they even
get started. Real-time is not enough!
Using machine learning and predictive analytics on SAP Cloud Platform we can
now alert local rangers 3 minutes ahead, before logging actually starts. The solution
is built with rapid prototyping in only 5 days.
Prediction of when and where a chainsaw event is likely to happen is based on
historic sound events like chainsaws, parrots, gibbons, etc. Sounds captured by old
smartphones, called guardians, stream the rainforest sounds to a machine learning
model to detect these events.
A mobile app alerts and guides, via an augmented reality layer that displays the
direction and distance, the rangers into the right direction.
An SAP Analytics Cloud dashboard provides illegal logging statistics to the (local)
authorities.

Solution Details
Our solution is built with:
• SAP HANA Advanced Analytics – to create a predictive model on base of
historic sound events (called the probability matrix)
• Machine Learning – to detect sound events (like parrot, gibbon, truck, and
chainsaw) within the rainforest audio stream
• Real time integration to stream the rainforest data for continuous processing
and prediction of events to happen
• SAP HANA – to run the predictive model and process rainforest data real-time
• SAP Cloud Platform – to host the predictive model, the mobile application with
AR (SAPUI5) and alert the rangers
• SAP Analytics Cloud – to visualize sound events to authorities

Business value:
§ Predicting a chainsaw event 3 minutes in advance helps rangers to be on time. Loggers will be stopped before they can even begin.
§ With real time forensic evidence reporting the data captured is also used to create reports for various authorities as unbiased proof of
illegal activities which allow for a stronger case towards increased law enforcement support.
§ With a scalable solution RFCx is able to support its partners now and in the future. Modern technology like machine learning, internet of
things, predictive analytics RFCx builds a platform that can be used to protect the rainforest on one hand, but can also be used by
biologists to study species in areas with guardians (upcycled smartphones) deployed.

Deployment details
Development of predictive model, ranger app and stakeholders dashboard is done
in a week of rapid prototyping with the Run Live Truck from SAP Netherlands.
Starting September 27 and delivery on October 4th 2017, just in time before Topher
White’s keynote at SAP’s Connect to Innovate event.
Today RFCx and SAP are still discussing next steps to deliver the solution to RFCx
and its partners (rangers and local authorities) in South America, India and Africa.
Major result is that it is now proven that the sound profile of the rainforest can be
used for predictions, forensic evidence reporting and with that illegal deforestation
can be halted.
The work of Rainforest Connection contributes to at least two SAP and UN Global
