SEL SOCIETAS EUROPAEA LEPIDOPTEROLOGICA
The first ten years
The remarkable success over the last thirty years of the American Lepidopterist’s
Society led many lepidopterists to realize that there was a need for a similar supra
national society in Europe. Following proposals made by a number of leading
lepidopterists a meeting was called by Dr Rienk de J ong and O. K udrna at Bonn,
BRD on 18/19 September 1976 attended by 22 entomologists from eight European
countries. The proposal to found a society to further the study of European
Lepidoptera met with the general accord of this meeting. It was agreed that the aims of
the society should be :
1. To facilitate contacts between lepidopterists of the western Palaearctic region.
2. To provide and distribute information concerning the Lepidoptera.
3. To assist members in tackling problems of mutual interest and provide a forum for
their discussion.
4. To provide a body able to speak on matters concerning the conservation of the
Lepidoptera and their habitats at both national and international levels.
The Meeting concluded with the election of a provisional Council the members of
which were :

To assist the Council three Committees were appointed :
1. For Systematics, Taxonomy and Nomenclature (Chairman E.S. Nielsen )
2. For Literature (Chairman O. Kudrna )
3. For the Protection of the Environment (Chairmen Dr F. Kasy and G. H essel-
barth ).
At this meeting it was decided that a Newsletter and a journal, Nota lepidopterologica,
should be published initially to be followed, as soon as resources permitted, by Acta
lepidopterologica and Opera lepidopterologica. It was also agreed that a biennal
Congress should be held, the first to be in Paris in early 1978. Following this initiative
the new Society was widely publicized and membership grew rapidly. At the end of
April 1978 there were 390 members and today there are more than 600 members from
34 countries. The first number of Nota lepidopterologica was published on 1.XI. 1977
and has appeared regularly since in four quaterly parts or, as in 1986, in two double
parts each year. Vol. 1 consisted of 172 pages and by 1985 (Vol. 8) had grown to 392
pages. Nota was edited by O. Kudrna until April 1980 when, on his resignation from
Council, the editorship was assumed by Emmanuel de Bros. Initially many problems
arose with the publication of Nota, and in the first three years no fewer than three
printers were involved in its production. Since 1980, however, thanks to the excellent
service provided by the printers Universa in Wetteren, Belgium, this problem has been
overcome. Parts 2-8 of the News were published under the editorship of Sigbert
Wagener and parts 9-13 under the editorship of Willy D e Prins.
Other publications have included the Proceedings o f the second Congress o f European
Lepidopterology, Karlsruhe, 1980 and of the Third Congress o f European Lepidoptero-
3logy, Cambridge, 1982. The proceedings of subsequent congresses will be published in due course. Also Bibliographia europaea lepidopterologica has been published annually since 1977, initially as part of Nota but as a separate publication since 1982 (1979/ 1980). The Statutes and Byelaws were published in 1979 and in revised form in 1986 and a List o f Members in 1984. The languages represented in these publications are english, french and german. Where feasible, e.g. in News and the Statutes, translations in all three languages are provided. The first Congress of European Lepidopterology was held at the Laboratoire d’Entomologie du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle, Paris 31 March to 1 April 1978. 33 papers were presented to a large number of members from many countries. The second Congress was held in Karlsruhe at the Landessammlungen fiir Naturkunde, 9 April to 12 April 1980 and was attended by 135 participants from 20 countries. 34 papers were presented. The third Congress was held in Churchill College, Cambridge, 13 to 16 April 1982 and 50 papers were presented to 120 delegates from 18 countries. The fourth Congress took place at the International Agricultural Centre, Wageningen, 24 to 27 April 1984 and was attended by 110 participants. 32 papers were presented. The fifth Congress organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was held in Budapest 7 to 10 April 1986 and was attended by 127 delegates. In all, 39 papers were submitted. The Congresses also included poster sessions, workshops, exhibits, and visits to nearby entomological collections and other places of interest. The Council has met on two occasions each year, in the spring and in autumn. Attendance at these meetings has been very good despite the long distances members have had to travel at their own expense. During the first ten years meetings have been held in Antwerp, Bocholt, Bonn, Budapest, Karlsruhe, Leiden, Montana, Paris, St Ives and Wageningen. These meetings were always most amicable and the social gatherings with which they terminated are most memorable! Membership of the Council remained substantially the same throughout the first ten years. However, during that period there was a change of Editor, as mentioned above, and the late Dr M. Gomez Bustillo succeeded Dr G. Bernardi as Meetings Secreta ry on the latter’s resignation from Council in 1981. Dr H.-E. Back was succeeded as Treasurer by Dr P. S. Wagener and W. D e Prins appointed to succeed Dr Wagener as Membership Secretary in 1982. Changes also occurred in the chairmanship of the Committees Miss P. G ilbert being appointed to the Committee for Literature in 1977 and Dr J. G epp in 1980 and Dr M.G. Morris in 1982 to the Committee for Habitat and Species Protection. I.W.B. Nye took over the Committee for Taxonomy and Nomenclature in 1982 (till 1986) on the appointment of E.S. N ielsen to a post in Australia. With rising costs it proved difficult to hold the subscription as low as was desired and over the first ten years it increased from DM 20.- to DM 40.-. In addition many members of the socialist countries were unable to obtain the required western currency and many of these lepidopterists were sponsored by members in other countries. Problems also arose with the high cost of currency transfers between countries and to alleviate this a special United Kingdom account was set up to enable members to pay in sterling if they wished. Throughout the ten years the Society has pursued a policy supporting the Conserva tion of the Lepidoptera. To this end SEL has excluded trading in specimens from all meetings, and dealers are excluded from membership. Several members have been active at the national level preparing Red Lists for the Lepidoptera, running recording 4
schemes, as part of the European Invertebrate Survey or striving to protect habitats
for the Lepidoptera. In 1981, several members helped the writer to produce a
comprehensive List of endangered European Butterflies for the European Parlia
ment.
Inevitably over the years a number of members have died and these are listed on page 2
of the Membership List and in News 11, 12, and 13. The total of 25 includes many
famous names and all will be sadly missed.

Sponsorships - appeal to members
It is well known that members from countries with currency restrictions cannot afford
to pay a subscription fee to SEL. For several of these members, fees have been kindly
paid by sponsors. However, no sponsors have yet come forward for 37 members who
are unable to pay. This results in a yearly loss of income amounting to DM 1850 - a
sum which SEL can ill afford.
The council therefore asks all members, who are in a position to do so, to assume a
sponsorship of a member unable to pay. Even a sponsorship with half the normal
subscription would be welcome! Please take up contact with the treasurer, and let him
know any special wishes concerning the area of common interest or the language of
correspondence.

On the next General Meeting in Sanremo the definitive adoption of the current Bye-
Laws should be voted. The Council asks members who wish to alter some items to send
their proposals to the General Secretary not later than 31 January 1988.

Ein Rückblick auf die ersten zehn Jahre ihres Bestehens
Der beachtliche Erfolg der «American Lepidopterist’s Society» liess bei vielen
Lepidopterologen den Wunsch aufkommen, eine ähnliche übernationale Gesellschaft
auch in Europa zu haben. Den Anregungen einer Anzahl führender Lepidopterologen
folgend, luden Dr. Rienk D e J ong und Otakar Kudrna zu einem ersten Treffen am
18./19. September 1976 nach Bonn in das Museum Koenigein. 22 Entomologen aus 8
europäischen Ländern folgten der Einladung. Der Vorschlag, eine Gesellschaft zur
Förderung der Lepidopterologie in Europa zu gründen, entsprach der allgemeinen
Zielsetzung dieses Treffens. Man stimmte darin überein, dass die Ziele der Gesell
schaft sein sollten :
1. Kontakte zwischen den Lepidopterologen der westpaläarktischen Region zu
erleichtern,
2. Lepidopteren betreffende Informationen zu liefern und zu verbreiten,
3. einander zu helfen beim Anpacken von Problemen gegenseitigen Interesses und ein
Forum zu ihrer Diskussion zu schaffen,
4. eine Einrichtung zu schaffen, die in der Lage ist, in Angelegenheiten des Biotop- und
Artenschutzes sowohl auf nationaler wie auf internationaler Ebene als berufener
Sprecher aufzutreten.
Die Zusammenkunft endete mit der Wahl eines provisorischen Vorstandes. Dessen
Mitglieder waren :

Zur Unterstützung des Vorstandes wurden drei Komitees gebildet :
1. für Systematik, Taxonomie und Nomenklatur - Vorsitzender : E.S. Nielsen
2. für Literatur - Vorsitzender : O. Kudrna
3. für Biotop- und Artenschutz der Schmetterlinge - Vorsitzende : Dr. F. Kasy und
G. Hesselbarth.
Auf dieser Sitzung wurde beschlossen, zunächst einen «Newsletter» und eine Zeit
schrift, Nota lepidopterologica, herauszugeben, denen, sobald die Mittel es erlaubten,
Acta lepidopterologica und Opera lepidopterologica folgen sollten. Man kam ebenfalls
überein, alle zwei Jahre einen Kongress für Lepidopterologie zu veranstalten, wovon
der erste zu Anfang 1978 in Paris statfmden sollte. Nach diesem Anfang wurde die
neue Gesellschaft bald weithin bekannt, und die Zahl der Mitglieder wuchs schnell.
Ende April 1978 waren es bereits 390 Mitglieder, und heute sind es mehr als 600
Mitglieder aus 34 Ländern. Die erste Nummer der Nota lepidopterologica erschien am
1.11.1977. Seitdem sind 9 Bände in jährlich mehreren Heften veröffentlicht worden.
Band 1 enthielt 172 Seiten, Band 8 (1985) 392 Seiten. Die Nota wurden bis April 1980
von O. Kudrna redigiert, dann, nach seinem Ausscheiden aus dem Vorstand, von
Emmanuel DE Bros. Die anfangs grossen Schwierigkeiten mit der Publikation der
Nota - allein dreimaliger Wechsel der Druckerei bei den ersten drei Bänden - konnten
ab 1980 dank der guten Zusammenarbeit mit der Druckerei Universa in Wetteren,
Belgien, überwunden werden.
6Weitere Publikationen schlossen die Referate des II. Europäischen Kongresses für
Lepidopterologie, 1980, in Karlsruhe (Biotop- und Artenschutz bei Schmetterlinge)
und die Proceedings o f the III. European Congress o f Lepidopterology, 1982, in
Cambridge, ein. Die Verhandlungen der nachfolgende Kongresse werden in
absehbarer Zeit veröffentlicht. Eine jährliche Übersicht über die lepidopterologische
Literatur in Europa wurde seit 1977, anfangs in Nota lepidopterologica, seit 1982 (für
1979/80) in einer eigenen Reihe Bibliographia europaea lepidopterologica publiziert.
Eine Satzung und Geschäftsordnung der Gesellschaft wurde 1979 und in abgeänderter
Neuauflage 1986 herausgebracht. Eine Liste der Mitglieder erschien 1979 in Nr. 5 der
Nachrichten und als gesondertes Heft 1984. Soweit wie möglich erschienen die
Publikationen in Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch.
Der I. Europäische Kongress für Lepidopterologie fand im Laboratoire d’Entomolo-
gie des Naturhistorischen Museums in Paris vom 31.3. bis 1.4.1978 statt. 33 Referate
wurden einer grossen Zahl von Mitgliederen aus zahlreichen Ländern geboten. Der II.
Europäische Kongress mit 34 Vorträgen wurde in den Landessammlungen für
Naturkunde in Karlsruhe vom 9.-12. April 1980 abgehalten und war von 135
Teihlnehmern aus 20 Ländern besucht. Der III. Europäische Kongress mit 50
Vorträgen führte vom 13.-16. April 1982 120 Teilnehmer aus 18 Länder im Churchill
College in Cambridge zusammen. Der IV. Europäische Kongress wurde von der
Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften vom 7.-10. April 1986 für 127 Teilnehmer
in Budapest organisiert; 39 Vorträge füllten das Programm. Neben den Vorträgen
boten auf allen Kongressen spezielle Arbeitsgruppen, Poster und Ausstellungen
zusätzliche Information. Besuche in entomologischen Sammlungen und anderen
wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen von allgemeinen Interesse sowie touristische Unter
nehmungen für Begleitpersonen gehörten ebenso zum Programm wie ein offizieller
Empfang und ein lukullisches Bankett.
Der Vorstand traf sich jährlich zweimal, im Frühjahr und im Herbst. Die Teilnahme
an diesen Sitzungen war sehr gut trotz der oft weiten Anreise und hohen Kosten, die
aus eigenen Mitteln der Vorstandsmitglieder bestritten werden mussten. Während der
vergangen zehn Jahre fanden Sitzungen in Antwerpen, Bocholt, Bonn, Budapest,
Cambridge, Karlsruhe, Leiden, Montana, Paris, St.-Ives und Wageningen statt. Diese
Zusammenkünfte waren stets sehr freundschaftlich, und das damit verbundene
gesellige Beisammensein lässt gerne daran zurückdenken.
Die personelle Zusammensetzung des Vorstandes blieb in den ersten zehn Jahren im
wesentlichen gleich. Auf der Generalversammlung 1980 in Karlsruhe wurde lediglich
O. Kudrna als Schriftleiter der Nota von Emmanuel de Bros und 1982 Dr. G.
Bernardi als Tagungssekretär von Dr. M.R. G omez Bustillo sowie Dr. H.-E. Back
als Schatzmeister von Dr. P. Sigbert Wagener abgelöst, dessen Amt als Mitglieder
sekretär W.O. D e Prins übernahm.
Mehrfache Veränderungen gab es auch in der Leitung der Komitees. So übernahm
Miss Pamela G ilbert 1977 das Komitee für Literatur von O. K udrna , Dr. J. G epp
1980 das Komitee für Biotop- und Artenschutz von Dr. F. Kasy und G. H esselbarth
und Dr. M.G. Morris 1982 von Dr. J. G epp sowie Dr. I.W.B. Nye 1982 das Komitee
für Taxonomie und Nomenklatur von Dr. E.S. Nielsen, der nach Australien über
siedelte.
Alljährlich steigende Druckkosten machten in den ersten zehn Jahren eine zweimalige
Anhebung der Beitragshöhe unausweichlich trotz aller Bemühungen, die Beiträge so
niedrig wie möglich zu halten. Hinzu kam, dass etwa 60 Mitglieder in Ländern mit
7Devisenbeschränkungen keine Beiträge zahlen konnten. Für sie übernahmen zum Teil
Mitglieder in anderen Ländern in dankenswerter Weise eine Patenschaft. Probleme
gab es auch immer wieder mit Änderungen der Währungskurse und hohen Gebühren
für Überweisungen. Um diesen wenigstens teilweise zu begegnen, wurde ein United-
Kingdom-Konto errichtet, um Mitgliedern die Beitragszahlung in Sterling zu
ermöglichen.
Wärend der zehn Jahre hat die Gesellschaft stets eine Politik zur Unterstützung des
Biotop- und Artenschutzes bei Schmetterlingen betrieben. Insektenhandel gab es auf
keiner ihrer Veranstaltungen, und Händler wurden soweit wie möglich von der
Mitgliedschaft ausgeschlossen. Auf nationaler Ebene waren zahlreiche Mitglieder an
der Erstellung Roter Listen der Schmetterlinge beteiligt, arbeiteten am Programm zur
Erfassung der Europäischen Wirbellosen mit oder waren aktiv im Biotopschutz für
Lepidopteren. Eine umfassende Liste der gefährdeten Tagfalter Europas wurde von
John H eath unter Mitwirkung zahlreicher Mitglieder 1981 für den Europa-Rat
erstellt.
25 Mitglieder hat die Gesellschaft in diesen zehn Jahren durch Tod verloren. Ihre
Namen sind in der Mitgliederliste von 1984 und in den Nachrichten 11, 12 und 13
verzeichnet. Manche Ehrenmitglieder und berühmte Namen sind darunter; sie alle
werden schmerzlich vermisst.

Appell an die Mitglieder zur Übernahme einer Patenschaft
Es ist bekannt, dass Mitglieder in Ländern mit Devisenbeschränkungen keine
Zahlungen an die SEL leisten können. Für eine Anzahl dieser Mitglieder sind in
dankenswerter Weise Patenschaften übernommen worden. Für 37 nichzahlenkönnen-
de Mitglieder gibt es noch keine derartige Patenschaft. Das bedeutet für SEL einen
jährlichen Ausfall an Einnahmen von 1.850,- DM, der kaum zu verkraften ist.
Der Vorstand richtet daher an alle Mitglieder, die dazu in der Lage sind, die eindringli
che Bitte, eine Patenschaft für nichtzahlenkönnende Mitglieder zu übernehmen. Auch
eine Patenschaft mit halber Beitragshöhe wird gerne angenommen! Bitte, setzen Sie
sich mit dem Schatzmeister in Verbindung und teilen Sie ihm eventuelle besondere
Wünsche bezüglich des Interessengebietes oder der Korrespondenzsprache mit.

Mitgliederversammlung in Sanremo
Auf der nächsten Mitgliederversammlung in Sanremo ist über die endgültige
Annahme der derzeitigen Geschäftsordnung abzustimmen. Der Vorstand bittet alle
Mitglieder Aenderungswünsche bis zur 31. Januar 1988 dem Generalsekretär mit zu

Les dix premières années
Au vu du succès étonnant de 1’«American Lepidopterist’s Society» ces trente dernières
années, nombre d’entomologistes se sont rendu compte qu’il pourrait bien y avoir en
Europe aussi besoin d’une telle société supranationale. Suite aux propositions
avancées par plusieurs lépidoptéristes de renom, une réunion fut organisée à Bonn
(RFA) par MM. Dr. Rienk de J ong et Otakar Kudrna au Musée Alexander Koenig
les 18/19 septembre 1986, réunion à laquelle participèrent 22 entomologistes venus de
8 pays d’Europe. La proposition de fonder une société pour promouvoir l’étude des
Lépidoptères européens fut acceptée par tous les participants, lesquels décidèrent que
les objectifs de la nouvelle société devaient être les suivants :
1. Faciliter les contacts entre lépidoptéristes de la région paléarctique occidentale.
2. Receuillir et diffuser tous renseignements sur les Lépidoptères.
3. Aider les membres à résoudre leurs problèmes et constituer un forum pour en
discuter.
4. Constituer un organisme apte à se prononcer sur tout ce qui concerne la protection
des Lépidoptères et la conservation de leurs biotopes sur le plan tant national qu’
international.
La réunion se termina par l’élection d’un Conseil provisoire dont les membres étaient
les suivants :

Pour soutenir le Conseil, trois Commissions furent créées :
1. Pour la systématique, taxonomie et nomenclature. Président : E.S. Nielsen .
2. Pour la littérature. Président : O. Kudrna .
3. Pour la protection des espèces et la conservation des biotopes. Présidents : Dr. F.
Kasy et G. H esselbarth.
Lors de cette première réunion, il fut également décidé de publier pour commencer des
«Nouvelles» (News, Nachrichten) internes et une revue, Nota lepidopterologica,
lesquelles devaient être suivies dès que les ressources le permettraient d'Acta lepidopte
rologica et Opéra lepidopterologica. On convint également d’organiser tous les deux
ans un congrès, dont le premier devait avoir lieu à Paris au début de 1978. Cette
initiative fut suivie d’une sérieuse publicité pour la nouvelle société, et le nombre de ses
membres augmenta rapidement : à la fin d’avril 1978, on en comptait déjà 390;
actuellement, la SEL a plus de 600 membres, répartis dans 34 pays. Le premier numéro
de Nota lepidopterologica fut publié le 1er novembre 1977, et depuis lors, la revue a
paru régulièrement à raison de quatre numéros trimestriels par an (en 1986 : deux
numéros doubles). Le Vol. 1comptait 172 pages, et ce nombre s’élevait en 1985 (Vol. 8)
à 392 pages. Nota lepidopterologica fut rédigé par O. Kudrna jusqu’à sa démission du
Conseil en avril 1980, et depuis lors, la rédaction est assurée par Emmanuel de Bros.
Les difficultés considérables rencontrées au début pour la publications - trois
changements d’imprimerie pour les trois premiers volumes - ont été surmontées dès
1980 grâce à la collaboration remarquable de l’imprimerie belge Universa à Wetteren.
Quant aux Nouvelles (News, Nachrichten), les numéros 2 à 8 furent rédigés par le Dr. P.
9S. Wagener , et depuis le numéro 9 (octobre 1982), elles sont l’oeuvre de Willy D e Prins (13 numéros en tout). D ’autres publications furent consacrées aux exposés présentés au Iléme Congrès européen de Lépidoptérologie à Karlsruhe en 1980 (.Biotop- und Artenschutz bei Schmetterlingen) et aux Procès-verbaux (Proceedings) du Illème Congrès à Cambridge en 1982. La publication des travaux des congrès suivants est également prévue. Une revue annuelle de la littérature lépidoptérologique en Europe est publiée depuis 1977, au début dans Nota, depuis 1982 (pour 1979/80) dans une série ad hoc : Bibliographia Europaea Lepidopterologica. Les Statuts et Règlements intérieurs de la société ont été publiés en 1979 et la nouvelle édition modifiée date de 1986. Une Liste de membres a paru en 1979 dans le No 5 des Nouvelles, puis, sous forme de brochure, en 1984. Autant que possible, les publications de la SEL ont paru en allemand, anglais et français. Le 1er Congrès Européen de Lépidoptérologie s’est tenu au Laboratoire d’Entomolo- gie du Muséum National d’Histoire naturelle de Paris du 31 mars au 1er avril 1978.33 exposés y furent présentés à une nombreuse assistance venue de nombreux pays. Le 2ème Congrès Européen (34 exposés) eut lieu au Musée de Karlsruhe (Landessamm- lungen für Naturkunde) du 9 au 12 avril 1980 : 135 participants venus de 20 pays. Le 3ème Congrès Européen (50 exposés) réunit du 13 au 16 avril 1982 120 participants venus de 18 pays au Churchill College à Cambridge. Le 4ème Congrès Européen (30 exposés) eut lieu à Wageningen (Hollande) dans l’International Agricultural Center, du 24 au 27 avril 1984 : 110 participants. Enfin le 5ème Congrès Européen a été organisé par ’Académie Hongroise des Sciences à Budapest du 7 au 10 avril 1986:127 participants, 39 exposés. En plus des exposés, les congressistes ont pu bénificier chaque fois d’informations nombreuses fournies par des groupes de travail spéciaux (workshops), par des posters et des expositions. La visite de collections entomologi- ques et d’autres objets scientifiques d’intérêt général, ainsi que des excursions pour les accompagnants complétaient le programme, qui comprenait encore, last but not least, une réception officielle et un repas gastronomique. Le Conseil se réunit deux fois par an, au printemps et en automne. Malgré le voyage souvent très long et les frais élevés, payés de leur poche par les membres du Conseil, la participation aux séances a toujours été très satisfaisante. Au cours des dix années écoulées, les séances du Conseil ont eu lieu à : Anvers, Bocholt, Bonn, Budapest, Cambridge, Karlsruhe, Leiden, Montana, St. Ives et Wageningen. Ces rencontres furent toujours très amicales, et les bons moments passés entre «comitards» restent inoubliables. La composition du Conseil est restée à peu près la même pendant les dix premières années. Lors de l’Assemblée générale de 1980 à Karlsruhe, O. Kudrna fut remplacé par E. de Bros comme rédacteur de Nota lepidopterologica, et en 1982 le Dr. G. Bernardi par le Dr. M.R. G omez Bustillo comme Secrétaire des congrès, ainsi que le Dr. H.-E. Back par le Dr. S. Wagener comme Trésorier, M. W. D e P rins reprenant sa fonction de Secrétaire des membres. Il y eut plusieurs changements dans la direction des Commissions. C’est ainsi qu’en 1977 Miss Pamela G ilbert succéda à O. Kudrna à la Commission de littérature; le Dr. J. G epp reprit en 1980 la Commission de protection des espèces et conservation des sites de MM. Dr. F. Kasy et G. H esselbarth, le Dr. M.G. Morris succédant en 1982 au Dr. J. G epp dans cette commission. Enfin à la Commission de taxonomie et de nomenclature, le Dr. I.W.B. Nye succéda au Dr. E.S. Nielsen , parti pour l’Australie. 10

14Les frais d’impression croissant d’année en année ont obligé la société à augmenter
deux fois en dix ans le montant de la cotisation, malgré tous les efforts faits pour la
maintenir le plus bas possible. A cela s’ajoute le fait qu’une soixantaine de membres
résidant dans les pays qui ont imposé des restrictions au transfert des devises n’ont
jamais pu payer leur cotisation. Pour une partie d’entre eux, quelques collègues
d’autres pays ont généreusement fonctionné comme «parrains». Des difficultés
résultent aussi des modifications constantes des cours du change, ainsi que des taxes
élevées pour les transferts d’argent. Pour en venir au moins partiellement à bout, un
compte spécial a été ouvert pour l’Angleterre (Royaume-Uni) afin de permettre aux
membres domiciliés dans ce pays de payer leur cotisation en livres sterling.
Pendant ses dix premières années d’existence, la SEL a toujours pratiqué une politique
de soutien à la protection des espèces et à la conservation des sites pour les papillons.
Il n’y a jamais au de commerce de papillons lors de ses manifestations, et autant que
possible les marchands d’insectes ne sont pas admis comme membres de la société. Sur
le plan national, de nombreux membres ont participé à l’élaboration des Listes rouges
de Lépidoptères, ont travaillé au Programme de Recensement des Invertébrés
Européens, ou se sont engagés activement dans la protection des biotopes pour les
Lépidoptères. Pour le Conseil d’Europe, une liste compète des Rhopalocères menacés
en Europe a été établie par John H eath en 1981, avec la collaboration de nombreux
membres.
Au cours de ces dix ans, la société a perdu 25 membres décédés. Leurs noms figurent
dans la Liste des membres de 1984 et dans les numéros 11,12 et 13 des Nouvelles. Parmi
eux figurent plusieurs membres d’honneur et bien des noms célèbres. Ils nous
manquent amèrement et nous ne les oublierons pas.

Appel à nos membres pour l’adoptation d'un «filleul»
Nous savons tous que nos collègues domiciliés dans les pays qui ont établi des
destrictions au transfert des devises ne peuvent pas payer leur cotisation à notre
société. Pour un certain nombre de ces membres, des parrains se sont généreusement
annoncés. Mais pour 37 d’entre ces collègues, tel n’est pas encore le cas, ce qui signifie
pour notre société une perte de DM 1850.-, quasiment impossible à compenser.
Le Conseil se permet donc de prier instammant tous nos membres qui sont en état de le
faire d’adopter un «filleul» parmi ces collègues qui sont dans l’impossibilité de payer.
Même un parrainage pour la moitié de la cotisation sera le bienvenu. A cet effet, il vous
suffira de contacter notre trésorier, en lui faisant part de vos désirs particuliers en ce
qui concerne les domaines qui vous intéressent et/ou la langue que vous utilisez pour
