Housing
Students are required to arrange their own accommodation due to restricted capacity of
UC Berkeley on-campus housing. UC Berkeley International Office vetted and suggested the
overseas students to visit some off-campus housing webpages:

Cal Rentals Off-Campus Housing Webpage
https://housing.berkeley.edu/calrentals

Legitimate Housing Facility (endorsed by UC Berkeley Summer Sessions)
http://summer.berkeley.edu/student-services/student-housing/non-ucb-housing-options

Students may browse some UC Berkeley International Students Facebook page,
e.g. “UC Berkeley off-campus housing” to obtain some advices from previous renters.

                                                                                           8

Visa Application
According to the US Consulate website, students are
required to present the DS-2019 form to the US consular
officer while applying for their J-visas (student visas).
Once students complete the online application for
the Startup Semester Programme, the SCET will send
the application materials to their UC Berkeley Visa
Processing Office and they will handle the collection
of the documents needed. The whole process will take
2-3 months. They will send the DS-2019 directly to the
    individual student once ready.

After that, students will apply for visas via US Consulate
online application system. Students are strongly
recommended to apply their visas in Hong Kong.
Students should be responsible for the visa application
fee HKD1,280 and SEVIS fee HKD 1,440.

As the Startup Semester Programme is not an exchange programme, students will be granted
leave of absence for one semester during their studies at UC Berkeley and do not need to
pay tuition fees to HKBU for the semester while studying at UC Berkeley. However, they are
required to pay their outstanding tuition fees for the whole normal study period before they
     are approved for graduation.

many unit(s) can be transfered to their current studies at HKBU.

Sharing from HKBU students (Fall Semester 2018 cohort)
 The overall application process was tough. I was surprised
that I finally made it! I expect this will be a life-changing
semester that equips me to become an individual with
entrepreneurship spirit by gaining professional knowledge
from a group of world-leading faculty members at UC
Berkeley and seasoned entrepreneurs at Silicon Valley. The
biggest challenge to me should be always speaking up my
idea in front of geniuses around the world.
                                                                           

 Upon receiving this offer, I was ecstatic because this is an
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Studying at UCB, I think I will
experience a new culture and meet people from all walks of
life so as to broaden my social network. As a science student,
entrepreneurship is something new to me. But I am sure it can
be resolved if I am working hard for it. I will try my best to adapt
to a new culture and overcome the culture shock. 

Miss Jane, TING Jiat Yin
BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology (Environmental Science Concentration), Faculty of Science

 I am very fortunate to be chosen as one of the representatives.
It is exciting that we will explore the successful startup
companies and the latest technology in the Bay Area.
Studying abroad for one semester could definitely enhance
my knowledge of entrepreneurship and cultivate my
independence. It would be challenging to immerse myself in
a different culture but I am ready to take this challenge! 

                                                                           Miss Joyce, TSANG Hoi Ting

 When I received this offer, I could not imagine that I will
live in another place for several months without my family
and friends. However, it motivates me to get well-prepared
to overcome all challenges. I am expecting to experience
different cultures, and to learn how to interact with people
                                             from various backgrounds. 

was eager to gain this opportunity, in particular, under a keen

I join this programme because I want to improve my sense of
entrepreneurship and innovation and obtain solid knowledge of

successful businessman. Also, studying in a global environment
will force me to be open-minded to accept different views and
ideas. Although I did not study some courses such as big data
analysis and technology before, I will try my best to overcome it. 
