Industrial Interior
Design Style
The industrial interior design style started when,
by the end of the second Industrial Revolution,
many factories in Western Europe decided to
transfer business to low-cost countries, leaving
numerous vacant buildings behind. As the cities’
populations were expanding quickly, these
neglected industrial buildings were turned into
residential dwellings. Instead of removing the
industrial background of these places, their history
was turned into a feature.
STYLE GUIDE Intro to Design Styles - Mode Renovations
When utilising the industrial interior design style, highlight
the history of the space - think steel beams, raw materials
and large open windows.

If you have exposed brick walls, leave them to be a feature in
the room or use a textured concrete-look render to reinforce
the ‘warehouse’ feel.

Focus on an open plan layout; replace walls by using area
rugs and clever furniture placement to define spaces.

Mid-Century Interior
       Design Style
Influenced by the German Bauhaus movement, ‘Mid-Century
Modern’ developed as its own style after the outbreak of the
World War II. The word ’Modern’ is often misused and actually
refers to the period between the 1940s and late 1960s.

Wartime influences are showcased in the simple, practical
approach, clean lines and uncluttered spaces that incorporate
items with multiple functions. Furniture is fuss-free, décor is
restrained to a point where the function is their feature. Post war,
cheery colours and spirited patterns were brought in to reflect the
                                            optimism of the time.

Pops of bold colour are carefully paired with neutrals to bring
balance to the space.

The design aesthetic uses naturally curved shapes and
minimalist silhouettes to evoke a nostalgic retro style. There is
a focus on geometry, promoting clean lines and asymmetrical
cohesion.

This design style is perfect for small rooms as it offers
maximum use of the available space by not overcrowding it
with fussy accessories.

If you are able, promote authentic Danish furniture pieces that
have been made iconic by this design style

Contemporary Interior
Design Style
It is commonly thought that ‘contemporary’ and
‘modern’ styles are the same but that is not actually
true. While ‘modern’ refers to the actual era in the past
(1940s-1970s), ‘contemporary’ design refers to what is
trending presently.

This style can be somewhat hard to define because key
trends of the moment are constantly being updated but
for now, think curved lines, organic shapes, neutral
colours and a minimalist approach.
STYLE GUIDE Intro to Design Styles - Mode Renovations
The colour palette is made up of mainly
neutral colours (black, white, tan and
grey). Bolder solids or metallics are also
often incorporated but mainly as an
accent or highlight colour.

Unlike Modern design which uses clean
lines, Contemporary Interior Design uses
a mix of curves and straight lines. Utilise
this design feature by creating a
statement piece of joinery in an
otherwise simple room.

Generous use of metal, stone and opaque
or clear glass works well in
contemporary styling. To soften and
warm up a space, use heavily textured
fabrics in plain colours for window
treatments, pillows or rugs.

Coastal Interior
Design Style
Coastal style is popular as it evokes the feeling of your favourite,
sunny holiday destination, it is also quite customisable and can
feel either casual and cool or present a more sophisticated look,
depending on your preference.

Coastal Interior design typically features a white or cream base
palette, adding in sandy tans or soft greys. This design style is all
about soothing colours that are easy on the eye, with even the
accent hues being mild, like aquamarine, sage or coral.

Layer textures with bleached
timbers, raw materialsand fresh
crisp linen to create a bright and airy
space that feels relaxing and fresh.

Focus on the soothing, minimalistic
feel of coastal design. The space
should feel open and airy. Be
selective about your features and
make sure you leave enough
negative space around them.

Include lots of natural light and if
you are renovating or building,
budget for new windows, skylights
and glass doors. Evoke the sense
that the outside is in.

Traditional
Interior
Design Style One of the most popular and timeless of
the design styles, the traditional interior
design style first originated in the
                       18thand 19thcenturies in Western
                  Europe. Incorporating the rich, wood
                tones of mahogany, ornate architectural
                    details and elegant furnishings, this
classic style has allowed homeowners to
feel - at the same time - comfortable and
                                  elegant in their homes.
Elegance and comfort are key, unlike
contemporary styling, Traditional is
all about classic shapes, sumptuous
furniture pieces featuring curves,
decorative ornaments and specific
details such as wood carvings and
ornate trims.

Choose deeper and neutral colours
like brown, beige or tan as a
foundation then add in crisp white or
subdued cream. Rich jewel tones are
also often used to uplift the room.

Tone-on-tone colours also emphasize
uniformity and rooms are often built
upon multiple pieces in the one shade

features such as pine or beech and simple
decor to add warmth, texture and depth. It
is simple and uncomplicated.

decadent details.
