Foreword
Welcome to the Summer 2018 prospectus from the Humber Recovery
                              College.

Humber NHS Foundation Trust continues to support the Recovery College
and our core values of Caring, Learning and Growing, puts the person at the
                        centre of everything we do.

The Humber Recovery College supports this educational approach to mental
wellbeing, supporting individuals to recognise their own resourcefulness,
talents and abilities in order to support them with knowledge and provide
useful tools enabling them to become experts in their own self-care.

Mental Health professionals, tutors with lived experience, peer-support
workers, volunteers and students themselves co-productively work together
to design and deliver the educational courses and provide resources to
empower mental health service users and those who support them.
Because of this, our courses are innovative, original and relevant to
             someone experiencing mental health difficulties.

Recovery
               Recovery is a personal journey.

You might already have, or are at least developing,
your own definition of what recovery means to you.
By focusing on strengths, abilities and personal
experience, this approach empowers individuals to
work towards their own goals whilst inspiring others to
                     work towards theirs.

Hope - that it is possible to work towards your own
             goals as defined by you

Opportunity - to build a meaningful and satisfying
                          life irrespective of any illness

Control - over any symptoms you may
experience and of your own future

5
Summer 2018 Humber Recovery College - Humber NHS ...
Recovery is...
… finding meaning in your experiences
… finding a new sense of who you are and what your purpose is
… discovering and using your own resources and resourcefulness
… growing from your experiences and taking back a sense of control
… rebuilding a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life
    … a person-centred approach to mental wellbeing
… about recognising that each person has a rich lived experience to
bring to the table (both in and outside of healthcare)

Recovery is NOT…
… a theory about what causes mental health problems
… about an end product or result
    … about making someone ‘better’
    … a linear process
… just for people who have experienced mental health difficulties
… the same thing as a ‘cure’
… a professional treatment or intervention

                                                                        6

all walks of life and backgrounds, regardless of if they have mental
                           health difficulties or not.

Students, tutors with lived experience, mental health professionals,
peer-support workers, volunteers and students co-productively
work together to design and deliver original, innovative workshops
and courses to empower and support people who are experiencing
or have experienced mental difficulties, to those who support them
and to those who have an interest in keeping themselves mentally
                             and emotionally well.

The Voluntary Services Team organise volunteer placements
across Humber NHS Foundation Trust. A big part of being a
volunteer is talking and listening, encouraging and making
     people feel welcomed and supported.

Although volunteering is not the same as work experience it
can provide a valuable insight in to NHS work environments,
enabling you to improve your skills and knowledge. Other
benefits of being a volunteer can include improving
confidence, meeting new people and even improving your
     mental health.

Volunteers need to go through the Trust’s usual recruitment
processes including a DBS check (which the Trust will pay for),
and you will also be required to attend a one day induction
before you can start your chosen role.

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a
volunteer with the Recovery College (or within the Trust in
general), please contact Sam at the Volunteer Services Team

Where do I find the Recovery College? The Recovery College
is not one building. Instead, courses are delivered in partnered venues within the
community across Hull and East Riding using a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model. FAQs
Do I need to be referred into the College? No! The Recovery College does not take referrals as we are
not a service, although healthcare professionals are encouraged to signpost people our way. It is your decision entirely to
become a student, to enrol and determine the course(s) you want to do.

How do I enrol? Simple! You complete an enrolment form and send it back to us along with an enrolment any
course fees. This can be done electronically, via the post or at one of our enrolment days. However, we do not take
telephone enrolments.

Who can access the Recovery College? We are proud to not have an eligibility criteria when it comes to
accessing our courses; you do not need to be ‘recovering’ from illness to benefit from these courses as they can contribute
to your own personal sense of good mental wellbeing.

Is this like school/college? Yes, in so much as you’re learning and you’re a student with us! We
operate in informal, safe, adult educational spaces where mutual respect is important.

Are there parking facilities? We aim to provide venues that are accessible by public transport, and
where possible, ensure there are free or paid parking facilities onsite or nearby. Humber NHS Foundation Trust
is proud to provide free parking at all of its sites. It is advisable that you plan ahead. Any parking fees are the
responsibility of the vehicle owner.
How much do these courses cost? We do not charge for our courses. However, we ask for £1 per
person for each enrolment form we receive. Some courses also require us to purchase extra resources so we
also ask students to contribute a small amount towards these costs - details of these can be found within the
course descriptions. These courses must be paid for upon enrolment and are normally non-refundable (feel free
to ring us to check if there’s spaces before enrolling) - you will not be enrolled without it!

How can I pay? You can pay in person (e.g. at Enrolment Days), by cheque or postal order (we advise
against sending cash in the post) or over the telephone to pay by card (once we’ve received your Enrolment Form
through the post/email). You will NOT be enrolled onto any courses until full payment for all monies been received
by the college.

What will I need to bring? Will there be refreshments? Although the tutors will provide the materials
required for the course, it may be helpful to bring a pen and a folder for your notes. We cannot guarantee that
refreshments are available at any of our venues so please bring a drink and any snacks you require. Other
courses will specify that you wear suitable clothing, and others may invite you to bring some of your own
materials. These exceptions will be described under individual course descriptions.

I want to attend a course but I’d prefer it if someone I knew came with me - is that
ok? Of course! Because of our inclusivity, anyone can attend as long as they also enrol. However, we ask that anyone
accompanying a student will actively participate in the course/workshop too!

I have another question - who do I ask? You can ask anyone in the Recovery College team if you see
them during the workshops/courses. You can also look online for information at www.humberrecoverycollege.nhs.uk, contact
us via Twitter (@HFTRecoveryCol) or Facebook (/HumberRecoveryCollege). Ring our office on 01482 389 124 or
email us at hnf-tr.recoverycollege@nhs.net and we’ll do our best to answer your questions!

Venues
The Humber Recovery College does not
teach out of a specific building (like a ‘regular’ college),
but instead works to a ‘hub-and-spoke’ model. This means that
although the team are based in their offices at Humber NHS
Trust HQ, they travel out to other Trust sites and partnered
venues within the Hull and East Riding community to teach. The
Recovery College is also proud to be working with a number of
teams who deliver courses on behalf of the Recovery College.

Courses
We pride ourselves on producing and delivering a broad range of
both practical and theoretical courses across Hull and East Riding
with our valued partners. Our courses may help our students take
control over their lives, manage and understand mental health,
help to learn and/or develop skills and/or promote good physical
health and wellbeing. We hope to reduce social isolation by
creating a peer-supportive community within and surrounding the
                          Recovery College.

 Managing and Understanding Mental Health - these
courses aim to develop a better understanding of Mental Health and
the challenges facing people experiencing mental health difficulties,
giving students the context, tools and strategies to apply within their
  own recovery journeys

 Learning and Developing Skills - these courses (which
are often creative and/or hands-on) look to developing practical skills
from friendly and knowledgeable tutors to build confidence and
promote positive self-esteem and emotional wellbeing

 Taking Control - these courses give students the practical
tools, knowledge and confidence with the aim of taking back control
of their lives by supporting future opportunities or otherwise
rebuilding confidence to move forwards within their recovery
  journeys

 Physical Health and Wellbeing - these courses
encourage physical wellbeing through exercise, healthy eating and
other ways to look after yourself. After all, a healthy body promotes a
  healthy mind!!

                                                                            20

Coping with Emotions is a DBT-based course to
help students improve their self-management
skills (ie. tolerating difficult feelings/situations,
managing overwhelming emotions, mindfulness,
interpersonal relationships and communication
skills). Combining taught input, group and
independent work, we think about concepts such
as boundaries, self-destructive coping and conflict
in relationships and as a group we can generate
ideas for new ways to think and behave and Coping

improve our experience of life. This is a high-
intensity and emotive course; students would
need to attend the full 9 weeks and complete
weekly self-help homework to benefit the most.
Previous students have found that the course can

be difficult due to its nature of talking about
dealing with difficult emotions, but being part of
the group has been as helpful and restorative as
the content of the course itself.

Partnerships
The Humber Recovery College are proud to work in
Partnership with many valued groups and
organisations. Have a look and see some of the
things that they have to offer!

                                      The Recovery College
                                          is very proud of its
                                        employment support
team, Positive Assets who deliver our work-based courses.
Positive Assets specialise in employment support for people
who have experienced mental health difficulties.

Most people who use mental health services want to work and are capable of
work with the right support. However, they can face discrimination when
applying for work. Humber NHS Foundation developed the Positive Assets
service to challenge this discrimination. Positive Assets can help you find out
about vacancies, support you to make job applications and prepare you for
interview. We can also help you with practical matters such as benefits and
childcare and provide ongoing support when in work.

       To be eligible for the Positive Assets service you must;
 Live in Hull or have a Hull GP
 Be ready to be actively seeking paid employment
 Have accessed secondary mental health services
(if you are not sure we will be happy to guide you)

Art Group
This is a six week group for individuals to be able to access a creative
environment to explore themselves. This provides a safe place to
share your experiences if you want to, or just enjoy the activities!

Peer Support
This six week programme is an interactive group looking at linking
feelings and how these effect our daily lives. Within the group there
will be an opportunity to explore and discuss how life events can
impact us, both positively and negatively relating to our mental health
and wider emotional well-being.

Being connected with our peers is a big part within all our group
                          activities.

Ways To Wellbeing
“At Hull and East Yorkshire Mind we use a ‘Recovery
approach’ to support each person. Through our
workshops we aim to provide ideas and techniques to
enable individuals to take control of their next steps towards their recovery.
This is individual and we therefore use the ‘Five ways to wellbeing’ in all
sessions throughout the 12 week programme (as well as a prior assessment).
This creates a holistic look at different aspects of all our lives.

Some of the topics covered are:

    Confidence & assertiveness  Food, mood & sleep

 Stress and anxiety  Managing negative thoughts

    Mindfulness & relaxation

These 2 hour workshop topics are based around emotional well-being and
how these can link to our overall mental health, both positive and negative.

The learning styles will include sharing information through: PowerPoint,
hand-outs, group exercises, along with individual and group discussions.

Each participant will receive a folder to store course materials/handouts.
Progress will be tracked using a Mental Health Recovery Star to consider
action planning and personal goals.
