Östersund - YOUR GUIDE TO EVENTS, ACTIVITIES, SHOPPING, ACCOMODATION, RESTAURANTS AND MUCH MORE! - Visit Östersund
Simply, Welcome!
There’s something special about being in Östersund. The contrast
between city and mountains are two of the ingredients that make the city
unique and a magnificent summer destination. Whether your intention is
to experience the city’s throbbing pulse, the nature’s calming effect, for the
culinary delights or any other activity, you will discover that there are many
more activities we have to offer.
Sweden’s best city center! When Sweden was given the opportunity
of choosing the country’s best shopping experience, Östersund was voted
as the best one. The variety of boutiques, restaurants and cafes, the
pleasant atmosphere and the customer service, were part of the reasons
chosen for being placed as number 1!
On the 17th June the National Museum, Jamtli, will be officially opened.
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to experience a few of world
famous art celebrities e.g. Rubens, Carl Larsson and Rembrandt in a
premier exhibition “Six centuries of contemporary art”.
We look forward to a fantastic summer and hope you too will enjoy your
visit with us!

A day, an evening or

     …a day with the family
An exciting family day begins tentatively with a visit with tame moose in Orrviken. Moosegarden
has its first guided tour at 11:00. You will get both knowledge and close contact with these
animals. Then, new experiences await you after lunch in the city. At our fabulous museum
Jamtli something quite unexpected waits around every corner and you will discover history
in a playful way! Towards evening, its ideal to stroll around Badhusparken where you will find
a playground, a cafe and minigolf. You can also cross the Frösö bridge and check out all the
     enjoyable activities at Surfbutiken!

A pleasant evening can begin at the
newly opened Winebar at the Stor-

Thereafter take a leisurely stroll to
the waters edge for a tasty dinner at
Marité. The restaurant offers a view

To experience the heart of Öster-
sund, stroll the pedestrian walk /
street. (Prästgatan) This is where
you pass most of the restaurants,
coffee shops and outdoor cafe’s.
In the centre of Stortorget you will
come across URBAN where you
can relax for a few minutes. Conti-
nue back to Storgatan and take a
look at the city’s historical houses
as well as the nice boutiques along
the way. One of the newest is Frösö
Handtryck, a place for own desig-
ner products with a modern design.
Hopefully you will also be able to
make time for a visit to Storsjö-
hyttan’s own glassblowers.

Östersund took first place when
the retail trade’s magazine
’Market’ conducted their 2018
survey of Sweden’s best city
shopping.
The variety of fine dining, the
range of stores, the pleasant
surroundings and genuine wel-
coming atmosphere were some
of the topics which received
high ratings.

In the survey undertaken, over 40 city
centres and among 3 400 individual partici-
pants over the age of 15 were interviewed.
’It’s first and foremost a wonderful confir-
mation that we are on the correct course
in the development of the city centre’, says
Calle Hedman, project leader at Destina-
tion Östersund.
Calle and his colleagues work closely with
the city’s restaurants and shop owners to
create a city centre with a nice atmosphere,
good tastes, shopping and activities for
all ages.

who come to visit will also thrive. Our
stores and restaurants have understood
this really well.

Östersund is well-known for its many
small boutiques, stores and its gastrono-
mic offerings. The large retail chain-stores
are supplemented by the local-craft shops,
the food halls with their wonderful delica-
tessens, the shoemakers in the side alleys,
the furnishing shops next to Storgatan
and the many smaller boutiques with
their jewellery and fashions. In between
these stores one finds food stalls for all
tastes – from vegan, sushi and grills to fine
dining on Jämtland’s natural resources. In
a vibrant city centre one will always find
something to look forward to. We wish you
a warm welcome!
