Swat Valley trip planning sheet from Lahore
A short planning sheet for travellers heading to Swat and Kalam from Lahore or Islamabad. It comes from the Swat
package page on pakistantraveldiaries, the site of a tour company in Lahore.

Things to do
Ride the chairlift at Malam Jabba. Take a jeep from Kalam to Mahodand Lake. Walk under the deodars of Ushu Forest.
See the Gandhara sculpture in the Swat Museum, visit Butkara Stupa and the Jahanabad Buddha, and eat river trout in
Madyan or Bahrain.

Route and distances
Places come in this order driving up the valley. Mingora is the main city. Malam Jabba is about 45 km and 1.5 hours
from Mingora. Madyan is about 60 km, Bahrain about 2 hours and Kalam about 100 km and 3 hours from Mingora, at
roughly 2,000 m. Everything up to Kalam is on a paved road. The lakes and side valleys above Kalam need a jeep.
Mahodand Lake lies 35 to 40 km above Kalam at close to 3,000 m.

Best season
Summer is the main season for Kalam, and nights are cold even in July. Snow usually covers Kalam from December, and
the tracks to Mahodand, Utror and Gabral close until spring. Malam Jabba is skied mostly in January and February.

Tour options
The group tours run 3 days from Lahore by Toyota Coaster, leaving at 11 pm from Thokar Niaz Baig or Barkat Market,
with Islamabad guests picked up on the way. Couples can book a private car for 3 or 5 days. A 30% advance confirms
the booking.
