Tu 5.3. Tip: Pancake Day Races in London
In the Christian calendar, Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a traditional feast day which precedes
the 40-day fasting period of Lent that lasts until Easter. Pancake Day became a great way to use
the foods that were given up for Lent, such as milk, butter and eggs. There are London Pancake
Day races across the city, and you can even spot famous faces taking part, such as at the annual
Parliamentary Pancake Race, where politicians take on journalists to be crowned champions
outside the Houses of Parliament. Check for events nearer the time and for more details.

Christmas Market
We had a full house on Saturday 8th
December. Everything went very well and
the Christmas Shop brought it’s bit in. We
received lots of donations for the tombola
(which was a sell-out), but also in cash. The
British Skat Association alone raised £140
in a games day. Nevertheless, there were
more goods left than the year before, so
the profits went down a bit. The remaining
food was donated to The Connection at
St Martin’s to help the homeless. In the
end we were able to donate the profit of
£3150 to The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital,
Paddington, for equipment. Many thanks
to donors, customers, musicians and
helpers!

Stamps for Bethel
For many years we have been collecting used (and unused) stamps for Bethel, a social charity in
Bielefeld, Germany. The donated stamps are sorted and processed by disabled people to be sold
on. This gives them jobs and a lot of fun in finding out where this particular specimen is from. Please
keep all undamaged stamps and pass them on to Udo Bauer, who will send them on to this good
cause.

Street Money
A few people from the German YMCA have continued to collect money from the street. Some also
donated their spare pennies to the good cause. So we were able to donate £130 along with the
remaining Stollen etc to The Connection at St Martin’s, the homeless charity in Trafalgar Square.
Thanks to all involved!

we haven’t really returned to him, have we?
Unfortunately, we don’t always know which
way he would like us to turn, even if we want
to do it. We get easily distracted by interesting
things (at least I do), so returning to the Lord is
not a once and for all but a continuous effort
to redirect our steps to God again and again.
Lent is a good time to practise this. And after
Lent is a good time to continue this practice –
until next Lent. Like in football: after the game
                                                   is before the next one.
