Upcoming bridge construction boom

The U.S. has been underfunding its roadway maintenance for years,
which the ASCE says has resulted in a $786B backlog of
                  road and bridge capital needs.

The bulk of the backlog ($435B) is in repairing existing roads,
while $125B is needed for bridge repair, $120B for targeted system
expansion and $105 billion for targeted system enhancement
(which includes safety enhancements, operational improvements
                    and environmental projects).

Industry Challenges

Tougher bid competition / Faster project completion
     profit margins

Doing more with constrained Health, Safety and Environmental
     resources (higher compliance
     productivity per machine
     hour)

     Aging workforce/ staff
                                    Machine shortages
     retention/ staff recruitment

Questions to ask ourselves
Dredge efficiency and safety
 ● Where can we build competitive advantage?
 ● Are we achieving maximum efficiency?
 ● Are we at maximum uptime?
 ● Can we reduce re-work?
 ● Where can we improve site safety?
 ● Where are the areas to improve our profitability?

Paid or unpaid overdepth

Dredge tolerance imprecision can represent the profit for a project

Figure 1, USACE (2006)
...precision dredging, reducing that tolerance as much as possible,
is important, especially in environmental dredging.
There are several issues. For example, if required to remove
two million cubic yards, an owner does not want the
dredge operator to remove anything more because of sediment management
costs. Anything technology developers can do to
improve the process and reduce excess dredging, is valuable.

Dr. Donald Hayes, Research Environmental Engineer,
U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center
USACE Regulation No. 1130-2-520
(29 Nov 1996)

                     https://www.publications.usace.army.mil/Portals/76/Publications/EngineerRegulations/er_1130-2-520.pdf

Now, technology can achieve dredge tolerance within inches.
Dredging Challenges
 ● Sub-surface visibility / Working in the blind
 ● Monitoring project progress
 ● High processing and dump costs for contaminated material
 ● Limited safe working hours by daylight
 ● Challenging safety environment e.g. divers
 ● Guesswork > multiple passes to collect objects
 ● Rework of missed high spots/ slumping
 ● Mistakes can be costly
 ● Overwork > inefficiency
 ● Work interruptions for new survey verification

Why digitize?

 ● Accuracy: Higher precision relative to design
 ● Productivity: Operator experience is not essential. New operators can be trained
     quickly and become productive faster.
 ● Consistency: Reliable, repeatable results
 ● Safer: Traditional methods may involve assistance from personnel outside the safety
     of the machine cabin
 ● Flexibility: Machine Guidance systems can allows 24-hour operation, day or night
 ● Auditable: For insurance or billing disputes, keep a digital record/trail
 ● Lower costs: Reduce the need for frequent third party surveys
 ● Confidence: Know that the work has been completed before moving.
 ● Win bids: bid accurately and protect bid margins
Advantages of Cloud Collaboration
Solving Challenges
 ● High-definition sub-surface visibility
 ● Real-time project progress visibility
 ● Clear identification of foreign objects
